  • You must be choking 4 Sep 2011 (Ask HJ)

  • Cash Back Motoring (5PencePerMile) 20 Aug 2009 (Forum)
You go to an MOT test centre and get an official mileage reading each year, which tells the Government how many miles your car has travelled, multiply that by 5 pence and that?s how much you will be refunded; cover 10,000 miles and get a cheque for £500. This encourages us to drive economically because the price you pay for your fuel is determined by your average mpg.

  • Can a manufacturer's warranty save me money? 27 Oct 2012 (Ask HJ)

  • Hyundai i10 - Water ingress & warranty 20 Feb 2011 (Forum)
I've got an appointment to get the water ingress investigated by the dealership garage  but wondered if anyone is aware of this happening on other i10s and/or knows what might be the possible cause. The car's not been involved in any accidents or bumps. Also, I'm presuming the cost of the investigation of the leak and any repairs/parts that might be needed will be covered by the 5 yr warranty and I won't be charged anything?
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 00 2.0 HDi Aux Belt Removed, Cannot Start! 23 Nov 2009 (Forum)
I decided the aux belt may be harming the crankshaft pulley bearing by rubbing the timing belt cover and hence adding excess pressure so I cut it off. Car still didn't start - but now I guessed the battery was pretty dead. I charged the battery overnight - but still no joy! Am I missing something - as far as I can tell, theres nothing powered from the aux belt that should stop the car starting (Alternator, Air con, power steering is all?)
  • What's the best car for £5000? 27 Mar 2019 (Ask HJ)
I don't know a great deal about cars but I'm looking to spend somewhere between £3k and £5k. I've narrowed my choices down to a Volkswagen Golf, Ford...
  • Ford Fiesta - Fatal, non-fault, crash 27 Feb 2015 (Forum)
I now, through no fault of my own, face having no car for up to a year. I am fully comprehensive (SDP and Business Use) yet do not have courtesy car cover, the accident also occurred on my journey home from work, it is my own car not a company car. I can't afford to pay for hire or purchase one that is fit for the task, my current car is on finance/lease, which I still need to pay.
  • Ford Fiesta - Mk7 Fiesta 1.6 TDCI 14 Nov 2020 (Forum)
Hi all, I've just been looking at an 09 Fiesta 1.6tdci Titanium for my wife to replace her 206 however  I've read some articles that it's not the most reliable engine. She probably only covers a couple thousand miles a year as it's a secondary car to us really. The 206 has come unreliable as the battery keeps dying if we don't run it for a week and she's always liked Fiesta's and this Titanium looks amazing in the hot magenta but obviously want to make sure it's right.
  • 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe 2.2D auto AWD Highlander - Santa Fe auto lumpy down change 26 Sep 2020 (Forum)
My 2015MY ( built Dec2014) Santa Fe auto has just started exhibiting a lumpy down change from 2nd to 1st gear as I slow down and stop. All other up and down shifts are OK. The car has covered 106000km with a full supplying dealer service history ( serviced every 7500km). I’ve owned it from new and it’s 6 months out of warranty.
  • Citroen Xsara Picasso/Vauxhall Zafira - Cheap MPV opinions please! 15 Aug 2019 (Forum)
Which MPV would you guys plump for of the 2 mentioned with between £1500-2K to spend. I only cover 6-7K miles a year so it'll be a petrol version.  Other than looking for the obvious things you would look for when buying a used car. Have any of you peeps ever owned any of the 2 mentioned at all?
  • Any - HJ – Top 10 best snow socks 5 Feb 2019 (Forum)
Reads like a sales catalogue - no indication at all of whether the compiler of this list has actually tested any of these in the snow to judge which are the easiest to fit (in poor weather) and which give the best traction and drive-ability when roads are covered with snow and ice. How about a real-world comparison? PS – for what it’s worth, the Silknet snow socks actually do work very well – I’ve had a set in my car for the past 8 winters and never needed to fit them!
  • Ford Focus on 59 plate - Programming key fob 30 Dec 2018 (Forum)
We have a 2009 Focus, the battery went flat in one of the remotes, we replaced it now the car won't recognise the fob. Checked the ops manual it describes in great detail how to do it by putting the key in the ignition and turning it on 6 or 8 times. So I dug the plastic cover off, found a plastic (not a steel one) ignition barrel with a slot for the key.
  • Audi A3 tfsi 2.0 Quattro - Premium Petrol 11 Jun 2015 (Forum)
My 2010 A3 tfsi has covered 56000 miles, the engine uses very little oil. I'd like to keep the car for a couple more years. Would it be worth running on premium petrol, would this reduce carbon build up on the valves or would it have little effect as the fuel doesn't pass through/over the valves to clean them anyway?
  • Fiesta 2006 - Leaking Air Con - How to trace? 12 Mar 2015 (Forum)
With the aid of a UV light I can seen there is leak around where one of the pipes joins the condenser. Two questions. Is this a common failure on this car? Is it likely to be just a seal failure or perhaps a fracture where the pipe joins the body of the condenser? Alternatively, as the dye covers quite a large area, what removes the dye so that we can start afresh with tracing the leak?

  • legality of 'chipping' an engine 1 Dec 2013 (Forum)
Maybe this is considered a grey area? BTW, my Audi is chipped and my insurance company is happy to cover it for a small extra premium. I suppose you could consider ANY modification to a car that could affect the emissions is illegal, eg wider tyres, different exhaust, air cleaner etc, No doubt someone on this forum will put me right!
