Can a manufacturer's warranty save me money?

I drive a 2003 BMW320d that has done 125,000 miles. In July, the engine was destroyed by metal flaps from the air intake dislodging and going into the engine. Despite the mileage on the car, I pay for a manufacturer's warranty which covers parts and labour, as well as breakdown in the UK and Europe. The only exclusions are consumables and wear and tear on some components.

As a result a new engine was installed without any quibble. The car is worth no more than £4000 but the new engine would have cost up to £8000. I feel that this is excellent on the part of BMW and would advise all motorists to consider manufacturers' warranties carefully when they are offered.

Good point well made. This is a well-known problem with 320ds, 330ds and 530ds of the period. Many owners have the swirl flaps removed and sacrifice efficiency for reduced risk.
