Letter from Lagos 17 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Apparently Aba is the place where all the old vehicles get sent to die/be fixed? I went out for a walk this morning, and saw various great cars ? a LHD BMW 635, yours for peanuts. Shame about it having been concertinaed front and back! I went to watch a soccer match at the Aba Sadium, 25 000 suporters to watch Enyimba play Kano Pillars. Even the State Governor and his entourage pitched up, in a convoy of brand new Peugeot 504s and Toyota Landcruisers. -
Oil labelling explained 6 Nov 2010 (Forum)
APPROVALS Many oils mention various OEM?s on the bottle, the most common in the UK being VW, MB or BMW but do not be misled into thinking that you are buying a top oil because of this. Oil Companies send their oils to OEM?s for approval however some older specs are easily achieved and can be done so with the cheapest of mineral oils. -
Citroen DS5 - My Road Test Report 13 Mar 2015 (Forum)
The dash sweeps around the driver into the central console, where a large rotary knob, similar to BMW’s i-drive, controls everything from the (standard) SatNav, Bluetooth telephone, live traffic updates and the multi-media infotainment system. Now I usually like gadgets and the idea of getting to grips with new controls, but I have to admit, the DS5’s facia is quite daunting. -
Mini Cooper S Coupe - Second hand car problems from purchase 30 Nov 2013 (Forum)
On inspection I find that you have retained the detailed invoice which is normally supplied. Having driven a BMW Mini Cooper S for 5 years and a BMW Z4 for 5 years I have never had that situation. I am not sure how many more situations this garage can set up to create more suspicion. I do not accept your responses to the situation and need to make you aware that if you fail to fulfill your obligations under the SoGA you may be be in breach of contract and I will be entitled to a number of remedies against you bearing in mind that if we decide to retain the vehicle we will still have future rights. -

Where’s the joy? 10 Jan 2021 (Forum)
They’re quick but numb. I’ve driven modern Golf GTi’s, Focus ST’s, Civic Type R’s and fast Audi’s and BMW’s yet found none very memorable. Fast yes, but fun no. Assuming a budget of under £8,000, what can I buy that’ll give me the fizz down the trouser front I’ve missed out on? It no longer has family duties beyond transporting junior to school on my way to work and my commute lasts a total of 5 minutes (yes I am a lazy sod) so it has to be petrol and economy isn’t important. -
Blameless diesels need better friends 12 Mar 2015 (Forum)
At a morning meeting in central London attended by the UK chiefs of Ford , BMW , VW Group , Vauxhall and Jaguar Land Rover , SMMT CEO Mike Hawes presented research showing that three-quarters of UK motorists were against penalties for the country’s cleanest diesels. -
Any - Cheap way improve fuel economy by 10% ? 24 Sep 2014 (Forum)
Toyota, Honda, Citroen etc) charge upwards of an additional 3 to 5 thousand pounds for a petrol or diesel electric 'hybrid' version of several of their standard models - only to achieve little better than a 5 mpg real world improvement - then my invention, which could be applied to any modern petrol or diesel car for probably much less than £500 on the RRP - should be far more attractive. So my next task is to modify my Son's 6 year old BMW 123d Coupe (a twin turbo charged 2 litre diesel engine) and see if he notices any measureable benefits ! Ideally, of course, the test shold be spread across dozens of similar cars, half modified and half not - without telling the drivers anything had been changed - just telling them to keep a careful petrol log but to drive 'as normal' and to just note whenever they actually fill the tank to the brim as well. -
maybach, daimler ag, mercedes-benz, landulet - Mercedes officially stopping Maybach luxury collec 24 Aug 2012 (Forum)
Revived many times In the 1990s, all three major German automakers decided to create super-luxury lines, using respected names from the past. Volkswagen revived the Bentley, BMW acquired Rolls-Royce, and Mercedes took on the even more-distant Maybach collection. However, the limo-like super-luxury sedans never took off for any car maker in a way that was hoped for. No satnav, forgot map? Ring Dad! 27 Aug 2007 (Forum)
I thought I'd given him a good introduction to motoring; he washes his car, checks levels and tyres regularly and hasn't damaged anything yet. He is philosophical about being bullied on the A1 by some truck drivers and some BMW drivers who are too important to obey the 40mph limit under the Scotch Corner flyover; he deploys the Citroen AX's perky 50 bhp to keep up with the traffic yet he is not so lead-footed as to crucify the expected MPG. -
Aftermarket Xenons Illegal... 27 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Basically without auto headlamp height adjustment and washers then this is not legal. And motorbikes included as there is no agreed approval including for the manufacturer (BMW) taking advantage. Anyway here is the reply.... and as I say I do not want to open the debate again because this is kind of definitive from someone at the Department of Transport. : : Under the Road Traffic Act 1988 it is an offence to supply, fit or use vehicle parts which would cause a vehicle to fail to comply with the construction and use standards. -
Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDDi Duratorq 2001 Model 25 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Not sure about this model. Insulation and cladding rubbers in engine become brittle and breaks easily, even in BMW and S-500 Merz. Also, I try to service my car (changing Engine Oil and filter) for every 5,000km distance travelled. Book recommends 3,000 miles which is more or less 5,000km. And it recommends engine oil of grade 5W-30, but I cannot find such grades locally. -
Advice needed - Smokey Escort TD. 4 Jan 2004 (Forum)
In mid november, i sold my BMW 328i cabriolet and down graded to a 98 S Ford Escort TD with 77k on the clock and part s/h(Due to buying a house and doing lots of miles for work meant i needed more economy) When i test drove the escort, it was fine apart from blue smoke on overrun, which i assumed to be it burning off excess oil (Had just been serviced and sat on forecourt for a while) Anyways, salesman put my mind at rest and i bought the car. less than a week and 600 miles later, the oil light flickered on going round a roundabout to work. -
New wheels for a gigging musician? 13 Oct 2003 (Forum)
"Image" is completely unimportant, except that I think she'd rather be boiled in oil than be seen in something posh like a BMW or a car with fins and go-fast stripes or lots of gleamy bits. All this seems to me to point to one of the sales rep type of cars you see lots of, and probably one of the ones which is considered uncool, so that it's a bit cheaper. -
In praise of old clunkers 14 Sep 2003 (Forum)
I can do battle with Manila taxis on an equal footing whereas if you are in a nice newish vehicle they'll take it to the limit knowing you'll back down, I can cut up gleaming new bought-on-credit BMW's knowing they won't risk their paint jobs by retaliating. I took it to be serviced and experienced new levels of freedom and personal liberation by telling the mechanic to put in any old oil as long as it was the cheapest, and thus now sleep well instead of obsessing whether it should have been the 0w/40 or the 10w/30. -
'Death Trap' 22 Aug 2001 (Forum)
Snippet from a report of another bike crash from a local paper... Yesterday the Argus reported how horrified motorist Cliff Hegan, who was following the BMW and witnessed the crash, labelled the stretch of road a "death trap". But Councillor Bob Bright, Newport council's Cabinet member for community safety, said: "I don't think it is a particularly dangerous road. -

Mini Cooper F56 (9/14 reg) - Brake pad replacement Mini Cooper F56 17 Jun 2017 (Forum)
In particular, if front pads for an R56 can be supplied AND fitted for a total cost of £115, why does it cost £102 +VAT just in labour charges to fit front pads on an F56 Before anyone goes down the "all Mini/BMW dealers charge top dollar...go to an independent and get the pads from Euro Parts etc. etc... yes I know that, but when the car is still under warranty, is covered by a 5 year/50,000 mile TLC pack (from new) and is in for its first (TLC covered) brake fluid change PLUS the latest "Quality enhancement " (aka recall) for the axial bearing shells on crankshaft...and the dealer does a vehicle healthcheck and calls at 4pm and says "front pads 99% worn, rear pads 80% worn..and I can replace all of them by 5pm ........what would you do.......you wouldn't spend half a day getting other quotes would you ?? -
Saab - the future 10 Aug 2012 (Forum)
When it came to the engines, however, Saab simply signed a deal to buy the UK-built 1.6-litre turbo Mini engine from BMW. So there’s a certain symmetry in that the latest rescue plan of a company, which has never designed its own clean-sheet engine, will now never use an internal combustion engine again.
