Young driver education 25 Jun 2013 (Forum)
A more diverse bunch you couldn’t expect to hear from, but the message was clear: new drivers need a minimum level of tuition before taking the test, plus a higher standard of training, they need monitoring once they have passed their test, and they need ongoing tuition after their test. Sensible stuff, and I’m delighted to say, achievable stuff. -
Any From The Guardian - Electric car short term lease 16 Mar 2021 (Forum)
Drivers also have to be at least 30 to qualify, charging access costs an extra £10 a month, and you only get 800 miles a month included. It’s offering a basic Nissan Leaf for £330 a month plus £95 admin fee, although the Renault Zoe at £379, plus fee, looks a better bet. It also offers the MG ZS from £429 a month. These have much more space than the Zoe and would a good choice for anyone needing a standard family-sized car. -

VW Golf 1.6 FSE - Small claims-consuer rights act 2015 advice 13 Jul 2019 (Forum)
We have now sent them a letter of notice of legal action, and they refused again. For some reason they said we only informed them after six months had passed, but this is demonstrably not true with the paperwork and email records we have. I guess my main questions are: -We have two diagnostic readouts (the AA when we broke down once, and Halfords), plus a health check from a VW garage, dating from a couple of weeks after purchase to about 3 1/2 months after. -
What should I do if I paid for a diagnostic report and the garage will not give me a copy? 25 Dec 2016 (Ask HJ)

Can I get a refund from the dealership who mis-sold me a damaged Renault Captur? 10 Feb 2017 (Ask HJ)
I bought a year old Renault Captur at the weekend and it appears to be a nice, well-kept car. However, driving it home I noticed what looked like specks... -
Parking fine - student in need of legal advice 8 Feb 2013 (Forum)
I was waiting for the response for 2 months. Few days ago I received a letter from "Debt Recovery Plus Ltd" stating that the amount outstanding is now £150. I called you and explained that I had received no response after my appealance, but their advisor stated that they had sent me an answer and I had 35 days to send a proof that I had had a valid parking ticket at 08/11/2012. -
Postcard from Moscow 29 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Our Rover was being driven at up to 70 MPH through the city, undertaking and overtaking in the process, with us in turn being passed either side. Oh yes, along the dueled sections there are U-turners queued up in the outside lane to avoid, too. I have seen more (all of these cars painted black, of course) Porsche Cayenne Turbo 4x4s, current generation 750iL and V8 X5s, A8 W12s, Bentleys, and even Hummers than I have seen in the rest of my life, all adorned with acres of that aforementioned black tinted glass plus huge, usually chrome, wheels and rubber band tyres. -
When DVLA inspections go wrong 7 Jun 2007 (Forum)
and who's the bloke in the Freelander who's about to buy shares in Autoglass?? Another 15 minutes pass and then the DVLA Inspector (the one I've got the appointment with) sticks his head through the van door, looks at me, looks at the office he's with, and says "what the hell have you arrested him for, the bloke you want is in that transit" and points to the transit and trailer that was in my way in the first place !! -
Unhappy with main dealer-how to proceed? 13 Jan 2006 (Forum)
It's a thousand or so miles from service and cambelt, may as well have that done whilst it's in there, save me some hassle in a fortnight - so i asked, and she "added it to the job sheet") Anyway, the day passed, and just about "home time" i had a call from a bloke at the dealer, who told me: "Hi, whilst doing the service, we noticed the following could use doing: And proceeded to list off a number of items totalling just shy of £1000 (front suspension tie rods, front discs and pads, water pump, etc) Plus your fuel-pump which is the reason it broke down, that's £308 (Hang on, i thought, fuel pump? -
letter from the colonies vol 14 18 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Each cabin has a heavily barred window and outside is a number of plastic chairs to accommodate the inevitable waiting which is so much part of life here. Fixers pass up and down the crowds promising shortcuts for money and there are chaps who will stand in line for you if you don't want to do it yourself. Beware however since you may not see your money or papers again. -
Advice needed after accident :( 21 Dec 2005 (Forum)
They tell me the chassis is twisted slightly due to the uneven impact and will need to be put on a jig to correct it. They estimate that to cost at least £100, plus about 8 hours labour. Then there's parts and spraying and fitting... he said he'd be surprised if it wasn't at least £2K. That's obviousley more than the car is worth. Insultingly, he offered me £250 for it in scrap because it had new tyres (which cost me £190 last week!). -
seat leon mk3 1.6tdi - Seat leon electrical gremlins - anyone any thought 6 May 2021 (Forum)
Few days later on a long 4 hour trip I dropped the e/window and the traction control/abs/headlight range warning lights all came on. plus odd ball stuff like winter tyres and cornering light errors (which it doesn't have). My cousins garage up north read loads of low voltage warnings and rear left abs error. He swapped the abs sensor, checked wiring back to abs pump and all ok so he thought it might be the pump. -
from Catherine about my motorbike course 30 Apr 2004 (Forum)
G he will give me a hard time when he sees this. He teaches English occasionally so I will get a printout of this with red lines all over it! Plus lecture about bandwidth.. I have never been to UK, perhaps one day. Thanks HJ and moderators. Cathy. -
A very detailed explanation of how DPFs work 2 Jan 2012 (Forum)
This arrangement forces the exhaust gases to flow through the porous walls, which acts as the filters medium. Particulates that are too big to pass through the porous walls are left behind and stored in the channels. To prevent the particulates creating an obstruction to the exhaust gas flow, the filter system provides a regeneration mechanism, which involves raising the temperature of the filter to such an extent that the particulates are incinerated and as a result removed from the filter. -
2004 Pontiac GTO - Motor Trend review 7 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Even wearing its standard M+S tires, our test car scorched from 0 to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds and tripped the quarter-mile lights in 13.62 seconds at 104.78 mph--numbers that would leave a 1960s-vintage GTO seeing yellow. When we last tested a supercharged Ford Mustang SVT Cobra (another front-V-8, rear-drive two-plus-two priced in the mid-$30s), it bettered those numbers, reaching 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds and nailing the quarter mile in 13.0 at 110.7 mph. But the track stats tell only a small fraction of the story.
