  • Dirty old `soot ball juggling` diesel? - at 6.5yrs 16 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Cheap soot and stink? Or expensive and constipated DPF with failed laxatives? The old `juggler` is seeming more attractive to us by the day, we might just continue to keep it going - until perhaps a new pure electric car can undertake its daily 20 miles of around 40 cold stop starts.

  • Petrol Turbo Reliability? 11 Apr 2013 (Forum)
HJ advises against buying a second hand turbo diesel car on the grounds of reliability and subsequent expense. I wonder now if the same rules apply to petrol cars with a turbo? Modern BMWs and Fords now have petrol turbo engines and we normally buy two or three year old cars with modest mileages.
  • What's the oldest driving school car you've seen? 17 Dec 2009 (Forum)
I spotted a V reg Corsa the other day and thought it was quite old for a learner school vehicle. I guess there is no reason why a driving school can't operate a fleet of bangers if they wanted providing they are safe and practical but I am curious to know how long a car used by many different people can keep going.
  • Checking transferability of reg. number 21 Nov 2007 (Forum)
I've found an old car (pre 1963) in a basket which I would like to buy, but the owner wants a lot for it because of the number plate. The registration is 33 EXF. I remember from somewhere that if you sell the reg of an old car like this the dvla allocate a number which is then non transferable, and these numbers often have an X in them.
  • Rust in Peace 4 Jun 2005 (Forum)
I've just got back from a week in Devon (the week before it fills up with caravans) and while I was there I spotted a garage in a village called Chapmans Well which had a forecourt full of rotting old 60s sports cars. I'm not sure that the garage is in operation because the forecourt was literally full of rusting old cars. From memory the cars included an MGA, a Triumph Stag and a Jaguar saloon (Inspector Morse shape).

  • Honda Prelude 20 Apr 2002 (Forum)
One of my customers has just collected his £250 14yr old car from a service. He has chosen to run for this for a couple of years but now choses to have something a bit better....a lot better in fact. He is looking at the cash purchase of a two year old Honda Prelude, one of the last.
  • What stops cars starting? 12 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Points that drift & need resetting every 500 miles (does that fall into maintenance?) Bad maintenance: old plugs; worn leads; cracked distributor caps; rusted rotors; pitted points, old battery. Failure to replace the timing belt. Over complicated design: My theory is that modern cars are more likely to give you a spectacular failure than simpler, older cars.
  • Is 6 Grand+5 y/o a car tipping point? 16 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Seems to me that high spec 6K/5year old cars are very expensive in the 2-3 year term - anyone agree?
  • Automatics - Elderly drivers + automatic = crash? 26 Feb 2016 (Forum)
Driver 83 year old man So pedal confusion panic could be a factor in all these cases (as could several other factors I admit) but instead of banning 80+ year olds from driving should we stop them driving autos or make left foot braking training compulsory (if that is even possible?)
  • Ford Focus - Ford 'Candy Red' - Chips, Repairs & Fades? 10 Apr 2011 (Forum)
Hi, I'm thinking of buying a Focus in 'Candy Red' - this is apparently a 'tri-coat' paint. My current car (a ford in 'Midnight Blue' metalic) looks fantastic even though it's getting on for 7 years old now [it is washed/waxed on a regular basis]. Candy Red looks great 'today' - but I'm worried if it's likely to fade (you see a lot of old faded red cars on the road) - and also if it's any more likey to chip (or show the chips) than a regular metalic etc.

  • Old designs a british speciality? 4 Feb 2007 (Forum)
What is it about British cars that people find so endearing, that they will buy very outdated designs, usually for huge prices? Do we really put as much soul into cars as the italians do, in an english sort of way?
  • Jaguar X type 6 Mar 2006 (Forum)
As usual, the cheapest deals seem to be in the north of England or Scotland while I'm based in Kent, but distance is no object if I can save a couple of grand! Yes I know that Mercs and BMW are probably better cars but a 1 or 2 year old model is still too close to the new price. Whereas I've seen some X types Jags at two thirds their cost price at only a year old so in the real world,a one year old 3 series is £20k,but the similar equipped jag is £15k!
  • Citroen BX - Safety ? 11 May 2002 (Forum)
Hello I am considering buying a Citroen BX for my 23 year old Daughter - However I am slightly worried that they don't seem very sturdy, She had an Old Astra before which she crashed, only a very low speed accident but she was horrified at the amount of damage done to the car.

  • Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 18-08-2018 Part 1 19 Aug 2018 (Forum)
Good grief. A near 6 year old Golf with 14k on the clock and someone wants to trade it for another brand new car that will only do just over 2000 miles every year!? Are some people mad? The 'new' car will depreciate massively.
