  • ABS warning light 16 Jan 2003 (Forum)
Dear users, The warning light on my S-Reg 21,000 miles Daewoo Lanos has just come on today. The brake fluid is fine -no apparent leak- and was replaced 5 months ago by dealer, although it had not been done before judging by the service guide (when the same guide says it should be done every 2 years- I've had it 16 months.
  • sticking clutch/gearbox 306 Dt (98S) 10 Jan 2003 (Forum)
Anyone I have recently noticed my 306 (98 S) is taking a lot of effort to put in gear, any gear. Particular force required to get to 2nd (from either 1 or 3) and all areuncomfortably ropey. Have tried pushing the clutch pedal right into the floor which sometimes helps, and occasionally if I get the stick movement just so, a smoothish change happens.
  • Dangerous A 37 29 Dec 2002 (Forum)
Telegraph of 23rd Dec reports that Dorset Council is offering free advanced driving lessons to regular users of "A notorious 19 mile stretch of road where 10 people have been killed in the last 4 years". I wonder how many "Safety C*m*r*s" have been installed on this stretch, where they might be useful? They will probably be left on 40 mph limited Dual Carriageways and other safe places where there is money to be made! (Why won't the swear word filter let me write the words in clear?
  • Insurance Policy Quotes - Maybe Helpful 22 Dec 2002 (Forum)
    - and have found TESCO significantly cheaper than ALL the rest (and I'd narrowed down initially with Which?'s advice on best buys for my category). Although necessarily generalizing, I'd suggest any new/renewers try their site. I've no idea how good they are as insurers, but I'd imagine their size/reputation should make them reasonable.

HJ - I got a C70 recently, great car with some nice touches particularly the superb alloys. Horror, as I see they have balanced the wheels by clipping...
  • Accident 23 Apr 2002 (Forum)
I had an accident with my new Ford Fiesta Zetec S which I accidentally banged into a sheep (yes it was killed, instantly I might add). The car has been repaired by the Ford garage which took it away. When it came back, it had a different make tyre, the bonnet wasn't straight and there is silver paint on the inside of the door to let other people know that it's had an accident instantly.
  • USED PRICE 4 Apr 2002 (Forum)
Hope HJ doesn't mind me asking this question in The Back Room but I noticed someone else posed a similar question earlier this week. I am trying to sell my Aug 01 (Y reg) blue Fiesta Zetec S with aircon, 6 CD stereo, heated front screen and electric mirrors. The car has covered 5000 miles and has 1 owner from new. What price should I realistically expect if I advertise the car privately, and what figure should I be looking for as a part-exchange.

They were surprised to find in 49 of the 50 states the last words of drivers in 61.2 percent of fatal crashes were, "Oh, S**t!" Only the state of Alabama was different, where 96.4 percent of the final words were - "Hey Y'all, hold my beer and watch this!"

re golf 1.9 tdi (90bhp) - '98 S honest john in agony column beg dec 01 recommended idling engine after long runs in order to keep oil circulating through the turbo while it cools. this to avoid the oil turning to coke in the turbo bearings when oil seals may give way. - temp.guage during driving and also when idling/cooling remains at '90' (degr.) so no indication here of 'cooling off' period. question: for how long - 30 sec.s, 30 min.s ?
  • Changing Volvo 440 22 Jan 2002 (Forum)
My dad has an "M" plate Volvo 440 2 litre auto, which has served him well. He would like to change it for a newer car. The Volvo 70's don't fit in his garage. He needs an auto, would like heated front seats. He will use the car for going to and from his static caravan about 170 miles 12-14 times a year. He does not like my Focus estate.
  • Insane? 6 Dec 2001 (Forum)
I have a cousin the same age as me (late 20's). We are both spending just over 20 grand this month, me on a very modest 2 bedroom house, him on a BMW 3 series (imported from Germany via the internet). Fair enough, his BMW will look good and turn heads and my new house won't, but in five years time my house will hopefully be worth what I paid for it and his BMW will be worth 5 grand-ish.
  • Volvo 960 24V 15 Nov 2001 (Forum)
Re Volvo 960 24V I am thinking of buying another Volvo - I have a 940GLE estate Early 90's 960 24v saloons appear a great bargin at £1500 to £2000. Driven steadly, on mainly motorway runs, what MPG might I get? I can get low 30s out of my 940. Do any readers own 204 BHP 24V 960s, what do they think, what should I look out for?
  • MOT madness! 28 Jul 2001 (Forum)
Shocked and saddened I took it to another MOT garage, on the offchance that they may pass it, and guess what, they did - with flying colours. I don`t pretend to know a lot about cars but surely, it`s sad for the average punter who knows nothing about cars and goes to the `wrong` garage and ends up emptying their purses. Surely there must be some sort of overseeing body that looks after these MOT test operations?
  • General poor driving nowadays in Blighty 1 Nov 2008 (Forum)
I've not long returned from a long weekend in France (and very enjoyable it was too) and the thing that struck me quite noticeably was the vast difference in driving standards between the two countries 'er indoors was quite vocal on the subject too and she's one of those people that very much prefers to sit in the passenger seat and let me get on with it (fortunately) some examples are: when you're catching someone up on the m/way, who they themselves will need an overtake shortly i.e. they also are catching someone up (2 lanes for them, 3 for us which ought to be to our advantage, but due to the CLOG isn't) the accepted practice over there is for the vehicle in the middle of the equation to throttle off a bit and wait for you to pass, then pull out and do their manouevre...yet over here it is pull out early and make you wait absolutely everyone pulls back into the nearside lane after an overtake, whereas over here they dawdle along in the o/s lane mirror usage in France is more than acceptable, over here it seems to be optional when I got back to good old Blighty, pulled out of Dover and went up the hill on the A2, for the whole length of the up hill dual carriageway, some woman in a blue Escort did the whole length of it at 55mph in the o/s lane, thus preventing a queue of us 'popping off' the lorries before the single lane bit at the top, she could have quite easily moved back to the nearside but couldn't be bothered...doesn't happen in France on several bits of dual carriageway and m/way up the M2 there were a number of people unnecessarily staying in the o/s lane (i.e. nothing directly in front of them), to the extent that some motorists started under taking, which although i'm not a fan of I had a degree of sympathy with the final straw was the coach that did a sudden 'signal, manouevre, mirror' despite not being that close to the vehicle it wanted to overtake (thus not giving me much of a chance to realise it was a possibility) and when he realised i was having to brake quite well, swerved back into the nearside lane, then gave me a load of main beam once i'd gone past...marvellous, try checking your mirrors first pal, i wasn't going that fast, had headlights on in the dusk and was fully loaded with my kid in the car, so not willing to push it that much there were others too, like the fool in the green Audi A4 estate that felt it was reasonable to do 4 lanes of the M25 in a high speed swerve from the slip road to the o/s lane in one mad blast ..heaven alone knows what would have happened to a filtering m/c, as the lanes were fairly congested (approaching the toll bit)... and the blue Renault Clio with the young chav that accelerated as hard as he could away from the toll (saw it in my nearside mirror) and thought he could do the double white line lane markings and barge in front of me, but misinterpreted the situation, because by then i'd become Mr Grumpy and closed the gap..which had him accelerating right up to my bumper, revving like hell, then dropping back all the way through the tunnel (the temptation to dab the brakes at a critical moment was severe, but I managed to resist it).

We’re still just with worse to drive and less efficient SUV wannabe’s like the Qashqai and swmbo’s HRV instead, while I’d really rather have a good Camry, examples of which you see regularly here dating back to the 80’s and 90’s and still running. I did spot a few Honda HRV’s and CRV’s and several showed paintwork damage from the heat, one HRV had the paint on the roof burnt off. Possibly it’s been a non-insurance approved bodge repair job but it wasn’t the only Honda I spotted with paint issues.

It could run to 150,000 miles yet beat most hot hatches down a twisting B road and it wasn’t too expensive to buy, especially used as everyone sought out people carriers and premium badges with piddly 4cyl motors. I’ve had many a pleasant journey behind the wheel of a 90’s Ford and sadly with the future turning increasingly green I doubt I’ll enjoy the same again from one without buying a retro classic.
  • Mini Clubman - The 36 point mark. 9 Feb 2021 (Forum)
Evidently I was doing 36mph, I know I wasnt as I live virtually opposite the camera and I never, ever drive more than 30mph thesedays as Ive been caught 4 times in the last 4 years ...not good, I know but Im from the 1970's era where 30-35mph wasnt considered fast  BUT, no excuse and I'd be happy to take my punishment if I wernt disputing the vailidity of this camera. Others in the village have also been clocked at 36mph by this camera.
  • How far safety has moved on 14 Jun 2020 (Forum)
It’s the first privately run multi car crash test run by the European motoring press and it shocked the public and pressured the car manufacturers into action. It pretty much instigated the big safety push of the 1990’s which saved countless lives. They took a selection of large executive cars and ran them into an offset concrete barrier at 35mph, something that today’s superminis would survive with relative ease.
  • Electric cars ... the future. 18 Mar 2020 (Forum)
Was parked up in a spare parking bay in a local petrol station today whilst the wife popped in to get something from their shop (it's an M&S store and she likes their tinned tuna) ... and watching the queues for the pumps slowly move forward has made me think. (Incidentally, the queues moves much more slowly in this particular outlet due to everyone doing their M&S shopping whilst their car sits at a pump preventing anyone else from filling up) Anyway ... the experience of watching everyone fill up with petrol and diesel made me wonder if I really ought to consider electric next time I change cars.
