  • Peugeot 406 Hdi 2.2 - Min level additive gasoil alarm 5 Apr 2010 (Forum)
Hi there, I was wondering if someone could help me fix this issue. When I start the car I get 2-3 alarms, first one is 'Fuel cap open', the 2nd one is 'Min level additive gasoil' and the third one which appears randomly is something along the lines of 'Clean Diesel Filter'. Someone I know recommended me a mechanic, he said he replaced the fuel tank but this did resolve the 1st alarm, He also got the additive and replaced it & put in a new filter but that also didn't work even though we drove the car constantly at 60 mph for 20 mins (apparently that should regenerated the FAP and clear the alarm).
  • The life and times of the humble glowplug... 27 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Do you reckon that modern glow plugs in a modern engine that will probably start (eventually) in most conditions without their use, will last longer than in old IDI applications, where they were needed a lot, but perhaps didn't stay on after the engine had fired? Will modern fuel injection systems and the quality of the fuel also contribute to a longer life for the modern glowplug...?
  • Ford Fiesta (2009 - ) - Miles per gallon 26 Jan 2010 (Forum)
If I had bought the car with my own money could I take it back to Ford demanding my money back because there's no way this vehicle will achieve anything like the fuel consumption they claim?
  • Nissan Micra (2003 - 2010) - 03 1.4 Malfunction Light-problem with air pipe? 16 Jan 2010 (Forum)
just wondered if this was an easy problem to fix? also will the fact the air pipe has a hole in it be affecting the fuel efficiency and also how the engine runs? as is quite juddery in 2nd gear but all other gears are fine but fuel efficiency seems to be quite low. just from reading other posts am worried its going to be case of now the Malfunction light has come one its going to keep coming on regardless of whether problems are fixed are not. heard a lot about the oxygen sensors on these not working-is this linked to the air pipe?
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 02 1.8 damage during repair 6 Oct 2009 (Forum)
Dear Honest John, My Ford Focus (02) TDCi recently had to have a fuel pump, fuel filter and plugs replaced at a local Ford Dealership. My usual trusty mechanic couldn't deal with it due to it all being linked to the ECU. Anyway, 2 weeks later (last night) I picked up the car and immediately a noise and vibrating came from around the clutch area, specifically when the clutch was depressed in a low gear.
  • MPG - How much is your banger costing you? 20 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Just some spent some time working out some statistics my dads car currently does 30mpg and he does 12,000 miles a year in his dying Fiesta I have worked out that he spends nearly £1800 a year on fuel. I've done the stats for my Corsa and I am getting 42mpg which is calculated from a pure city run sample. I do like to rev it a bit but I do avoid braking and drive very smoothly which is why I am probably getting a good MPG rate.
  • Need something v.cheap, powerful and economical! 7 May 2009 (Forum)
With 150bhp and weighing only 1150kg its not as quick as modern hot hatches but its no slow coach! Im a final year uni student a bit of a petrol head and skint. The golf does ok on fuel seeing as im quite heavy footed but as im really poor at the moment im thinking i should get something diesel until i finish uni and start a real job! My question is, can anyone suggest any diesels that i could get for for £1000 or less that are good on fuel and could be kind of fun to drive.
  • Volkswagen Golf II (1983 - 1992) - 1991 1.6 - coughing & spluttering 31 Mar 2009 (Forum)
    Additional info: - the engine has a slightly high idle speed - I've changed the oil and filter every 6k - for the first 6 months I used Optimax almost exclusively, but for the last 6 months my girlfriend has used a variety of cheaper fuel. Would anyone suggest any of the following? - Fuel additive/cleaner - Optimax only - carb adjustment - anything else Thanks very much {edited to make use of drop down menus that weren't previously available at time of first posting}

  • Nissan Terrano II (1993 - 2005) - 1998 2.7 Black smoke 10 Jan 2009 (Forum)
It is definitley not the turbo. It has been on 2 diagnostic machines which didn't shed any light other than a faulty fuel temperature sensor that has been replaced but it still smokes. A new air flow meter has also been fitted but to no avail although when you unplug the airflow meter and rev the engine there is no excessive black smoke although it is undrivable with the airflow meter unplugged as there is no power.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 1999 1.6 running roughly 30 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Drove home (about 60 miles) with no further problems, but the exhaust pipe is definitely showing it running rich. I've done a MPG check and it's doing about 40 MPG, so does not seem to be using fuel to any massive excess at all. Any ideas? Could the Lambda sensor have failed and it started to over-fuel and when I stopped and re-started, the ECU has adjusted itself for the faulty oxygen reading?
  • Ford Escort (1990 - 1992) - 1994 1.6LXi - Immobiliser Problems 8 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Really couldn't understand it. I had it towed back to my home and called a mechanic out. He ran all the usual checks such as fuel pressure, crankshaft and spark plug test. He then informed me that the immobiliser was stopping the curent igniting the fuel injectors to fire it up. He advised me to take it to a main dealer but they want £250 to put a new one in.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 01 1.8 "Gutless" 31 Jul 2008 (Forum)
I had a diagnostic done and it said 'EGR valve flow malfunction' and I intend to get this sorted, but will it cure the car's sluggishness? Now fuel prices are dropping I can use Tesco's 'good stuff', the 99 octane, but a combination of the higher octane fuel and Redex doesn't seem to have any real effect. It gets an Italian tune up twice a day on the dual carriageway to and from work (I'm not thrashing it!)

  • New engine - third time lucky? 14 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Well, driving home last night the car suddenly lost all power and I coasted to a halt at the side of a dual carriageway. Called the AA, truck arrived after about 45 mins and after a few checks the guy diagnosed a fuel delivery problem, probably a failed fuel pump. The car was towed to my home, and then taken this morning to the nearby VW dealers. I phoned this afternoon to check progress to be told it needed a new engine because a bolt in the cam belt tensioner had broken.
  • Mrs Nsar is looking to change - suggestions please 9 Jul 2008 (Forum)
A bit scuffed and worn but nothing a bit of tlc wouldn't cure. Trade in price maybe £4500? She wants to reduce her carbon footprint and fuel costs. Most journeys are either 15 mile commute or 70-80 round trips about twice a week. We have two kids and a dog, but I drive a Legacy estate so a smaller car is desirable on costs/enviro grounds.
  • Cars still being flogged to death, no saving then? 23 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Will some people choose to just not take the car out instead or will they be seen at the roadside gasping in indignation and blaming something else, such as the car, for having run out of fuel? ;) Even made myself yawn there, was it worth bothering?
  • Diesel vs Petrol school runs in Midi MPV? 12 May 2008 (Forum)
The concern I have is that 95%+ of her journeys are going to be short ones, less than 5 miles from a cold start, plenty of it stop / start traffic. What would the real world fuel economy of a Diesel engine vs Petrol from a cold start over a short distance be (I presume the Petrol would warm up quicker)? I've also heard a number of horror stories of particulate filters clogging and severe fuel dilution of oil after only 3k when a car has been subjected to such short journey abuse.
  • Toyota Avensis (2003 - 2008) - 04 2.0vti - stalling problem, not sure what to do 11 May 2008 (Forum)
Switch the aircon off and immediately it goes to 400-450. I have changed the air filter about a year ago and only ever use the best fuel. The fuel filter was also changed about two years ago. Mileage is 34K, so not much. I am stuck...
  • Rover 25 (1999 - 2005) - 02 1.4 16v engine misfire 16 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Running diagnostics either shows nothing amiss or refers to faults that are not pertinent to this model. Spark plugs and fuel filter have been replaced, and the fuel lines flushed, to no avail. The only significant work undertaken on the engine prior to this problem occurring, was to replace a blown head gasket at 55k.
