  • European Paint Directive 2007 31 May 2006 (Forum)
Does this include touch-up kits and force people to go to a body shop to fill a stone chip? I'm damned if I am going to take my car to a garage so they can charge £50+ to spray up minor areas, which are insignificant on a 17 year old car, but get rusty even so! -------------- Mike Farrow
  • Airbag system 1996 Peugeot 306 1.9DTS 27 May 2006 (Forum)
Hi, The airbag light was coming on and off for a while, probably due to my wife storing stuff under the seat and affecting the wiring and a "wiggle" down there seemed to cure it. I dont drive the car often and when I did recently, noticed it is on ALL the time. As the car is 10 yrs old I don't want to spend serious money on this. I already need to find a clip to stop the drivers window from falling forward and a regulator for the e.window on passenger side AND 2 discs!!!
  • 10,000 Mile Service Reasonable? Punto 21 Apr 2006 (Forum)
Apologies if this sounds a really basic. I am, however, very new to this car lark and paranoid that I'm not looking after my car properly! So, all advice is really appreciated. My Punto has about 11,ooo on it, but is not yet one year old (July). Is this about the right time for its first service (manual is really vague - but see below).
  • Fiat Panda choice 15 Oct 2005 (Forum)
My local Fiat dealership is offering brand new 55 reg 1.1 Active Pandas at £4995 on the road which seems like an absolute bargain to me. Alternatively they have 12 month old 1.2 Dynamic models at £5295. Has anyone experience of these cars? I know HJ rates them highly and it seems a more modern car than the Punto which is due to be replaced. Would you think it better to go for the 1.2 model with 12k showing rather than brand new 1.1 base with zero miles?
  • Toyota Corolla paint quality 27 Sep 2005 (Forum)
I have a 2005 Corolla less than 10000 miles in silver metallic(nice car) except the front is a rash of chips down to the black undercoat and minor scratches seem show up easily elsewhere. I've had many new cars and never experienced what seems to be soft or thin paintwork like this...my partners 6 year old fiesta is in better shape.
  • Damaged piantwork/rubber seals 31 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Hi I was looking for an almost new car for my wife and have seen a one year old Peugeot 307. On close inspection (first noticed on the glass front and rear there is white 'bloom' that covers it. If you then feel the paint surfaces on the panels they feel rough.
  • Megane - strange smell 5 Aug 2005 (Forum)
I wonder if it could be something to do with the aircon but I gave it a good run on hot air to dry it all out and it's no better. Car was fine when I put it in the garage. I've not had this problem on previous Renaults. Does anyone know what might be causing it? Could it be mould in the aircon? If so, how do I get rid of it? Car is only just over a year old.
  • RAV4 near end of lease... 29 Jun 2005 (Forum)
In other words - What's "fair wear and tear" for a 3yr old car and would I be better off attending to these things before they come to collect? If so any recommendations as to who to approach (West Yorks). Thanks in advance Andy
  • Direct Line Woes 19 May 2005 (Forum)
Just had my renewal from Direct Line. It's £76 more expensive than the quote I got online when I bought my new car a few weeks ago. They're also advertising intrest free monthly payments. When I rung up to challenge it, I got the usual 'for new customers only'. Well, I am now an 'old' customer as will my wife next month when she renews her insurance.
  • Toyota Corolla 27 Feb 2005 (Forum)
Hi, I'm looking for a little bit of advice for my dad. He is looking to change his car some time in the next few months. He currently has a 1.4 Renault Megane (V reg) and is considering a Toyota Corrolla of no more than 3 years old. He wants a diesel this time around. He does around 10,000 miles a year (I think thats what he said anyway).

  • Why need 2 split-pins to service escort? 6 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Hi I've just been looking over some old reciepts for my car and noticed that the 1st interim service (September 1990) charged for two split pins, code 20000524 at £0.08 + VAT each. What are these for? I cannot for the life of me think what needs split-pins, it is for something they just do at first service?
  • Polo 1.4 TDi or Corsa 1.7DTi 3 Apr 2004 (Forum)
We have been looking at these two cars to buy at about 12 months old. SWMBO likes the Corsa, I prefer the build quality of the VW. Probably not much between them in terms of reliability or mpg. Both quite nice to drive, given limitations of a small car.
  • High mileage estates 30 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Advice please: Had an offer to buy old camry estate 1989 with 100k on for £500. Very good shape for year. Do these engines and cars last as don't see many on road today. I also considered an older volvo estate maybe 740 or 940 around H, or J reg.
  • Gearbox / clutch prob. Mitsubishi Galant 13 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Have noticed that when cold, my car (which I bought yesterday, 16 months old / 17,000 miles) judders badly when releasing the clutch in 1st gear. Also, occasionally, when selecting 3rd gear (from 2nd) it feels, what I can only describe as \'crunchy\' (as though the clutch isn\'t engaged properly).
  • Punto - seat belt not retracting 10 Feb 2004 (Forum)
This is annoying, because I don't notice this has happened and end up trapping the seat belt in the door when I get out the car. It's also a concern - if the belt isn't retracting in 'normal use', what's the effect in the event of an accident? The car is just under two-years old and therefore still has its manufacturer's warranty.
  • Oil consumption ? why? 4 Feb 2004 (Forum)
I have noticed that correspondents on this forum often quote oil consumption rates for modern engines. In the past, only old bangers used oil ? a measure of an engine in good condition was that it did not need the oil topping up between changes. My first car, a Triumph Mayflower which cost £10 of carefully saved pocket money, left a smokescreen behind when it pulled away, because the piston rings were worn.
  • 2.0HDi Xsara Camshaft timing belt 2 Feb 2004 (Forum)
I own a Citroen Xsara 2.0HDi which is nearly 4 years old and has approx. 36000 miles on the clock. I intend to keep the car for another 2 years or 50,000 miles before I sell it. I would like to ask the experts 2 questions:- 1. When would you recommend I have the camshaft timing belt changed?
  • Renaut Diesel V 3 litre petrol 20 Sep 2003 (Forum)

  • ford warranty still valid ? 10 Mar 2003 (Forum)
I just bought a 18 month old Ford Focus Zetec 1.6, seems like a nice car, pleased with it, you may have already read about it under thread 'auction prices'. I'm wondering if the warranty is still valid, not that there is a problem, I'm just trying to decide whether to get a main dealer service or take it to a local non independant 'spit and sawdust' place.
