• Nissan X-Trail - Nissan X-Trail 2001-2007 Diesel turbos 31 Jan 2013 (Forum)
  I tested one the other day and apart from driving fine and being a really nice example, there was a whining noise from the engine. I have had turbos before, (my fav was a BMW 525 E34), but not one of these X-Trails. The whine was pronounced, heard at gentle accelleration as well as hard, and also heard sometimes on the way down the revs too. There was also the sound of what can only be described as a dump valve (or whatever the technical term is).

  Going to be covering the country so need something that is also comfortable after a 5-6 hour stint behind the wheel. Current car is a BMW 520 as I do a lot of motorway cruising and I'll be keeping it. I am a lady who is nearly 6' tall so need legroom and space. A6 Avant Quattro hasn't got enough clearance and I've been told that on the Allroad, the air suspension is pricey to fix if anything goes wrong.

    Fuel economy is a bonus, but not essentail as I am fortunate enough to have a Fuel card. At the moment, I am thinking about a Audi A3 2.0 TDI, a VW Golf 2.0 TDI and a BMW 118d. Does anyone else have any recommendations on cars to look at or avoid?

• Volkswagen Golf VI (2009 - ) - 'Like a Golf' advert 16 Sep 2009 (Forum)
  However, one of the parts of the ad has a supposed motoring TV presenter (who has a passing resemblance to Peter Kay) handbrake turning a car and describing it as handling like a Golf. Now the exterior shots of the car, though not revealing much, are of a BMW 1-Series, but I'm pretty sure the interior shots are of the latest Honda Civic. I can't really make out the other cars in the ad. Do other manufacturers get bothered about having their cars featured as second-rate in other firm's ads?

  Runflats...i've had no experience of them, but i saw a remarkable sight on Monday. As i bowled along the motorway inside lane at my frantic 53.8mph, i spied a newish 5 series BMW on the hard shoulder sporting 'Carlos Fandago' wheels or that's what it looked like as i approached. The nsr wheel was sticking out some 4 or so inches outside of the wheelarch, but the tyre appeared to be supporting the car, the inside bead of the tyre seemed to be resting in the centre dish of the wheel.

  The salesman said there had been a mix up and the car has been sold to someone else who is in the trade. This is a main dealer network with brands including Aston Martin, Mercedes, BMW.. The dealer principal will not be back until after the Bank holiday Monday so I have not spoken with him yet. This car was a great deal and I cannot find another one trade or private for at least £3000 more.

  Global Warming 8. VWs are rubbish 9. French cars are rubbish 10. Drivers of (insert car make here - usually BMW, sometimes vans, 4x4s etc) are all crazy fools 11. Everyone should buy a Mondeo 12. Lights. Their use, lack of use including how long it takes to change them 13. Middle lane hoggers 14. Outside lane hoggers 15.

  I would love a 3 series, but due to my band, its out of the question unless I buy it myself. So, the cars I'm contemplating are: BMW 120d SE Audi A3 Diesel Sportback 2.0 TDI 170 S Line 5dr Mini Cooper S Hatchback 1.6 3dr (Chilli Pack) Seat Leon Diesel Hatchback 2.0 16v TDI FR 5dr Does anyone have any advice on these? Pros? Cons?

  I've checked the lead time for orders placed in August on our company intranet and they are suggesting a wait of 7 - 8 MONTHS for what I consider a fairly standard hatchback. Anyone care to have a guess at what the delay is? BMW and Lexus all seem to be managing ok with lead times of around 10-12 weeks - I don't understand why it's so difficult to get my mitts on an Audi! Opinions welcome :-)

  I have a '89 bmw 535. I noticed some condensation on the oil cap the other day, therefore I changed the oil and took the car for a run. At the end of 50 miles I open up the cap and the white milky substance is back again.

  For similar price could probably get 1-2-year old Audi A4 Avant 2.0 TDI. Or for a little more, similar aged BMW 320d touring. Advice on which to choose? Or any other suggestions?

  the start of? Or the thermostate stuck open? Or a hole in the housing? Had a similar prob with a BMW ... that turned out to be the therostate.... but caused the headgasket to go eventually b4 the problem was identified... If i catch a head gaskett going b4 it actually does... is it expensive to fix??

  Don't get me wrong, I would love a new Lamborghini etc, and one day I may get my wish, but in the meantime, I would actually really like to know if a Mondeo ST220 is actually a better car new, than a BMW 320. That's an interesting story! So where tdo I go from here? IS there a mag that writes for grown ups, that doesn't worry too much about image and economy or am I relegated to the classic car stuff. -- Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?

  Anyway, went to see what Ford could do today as was very impressed with the New Focus I had as a hire car for two days. At least as good as the BMW 118d I tried a few days back in my opinion. They are trying to offer me the following: Ford New Focus 1.6 TDCi Zetec Climate with the optional 17" alloys and metallic paint for £14500. List price new is just over £16000.

  Cruising down the motorway at roughly 80 in reasonably light traffic. In outside lane, plenty of room to the car in front. BMW in front brakes hard for no apparent reason then continues on, I react and brake hard (as you do) and then carry on. About 1 mile later (so maybe not connected) the wheel starts to wobble violently, kind of left to right, so bad that I am having trouble controlling the car.

  I'm dithering over my new company car, would like to know anybodys views on the following - I have included the net cost to me. BMW 320Cd SE (£200/month inc tax) - didnt think the engine was that good (but it had only done 1500 miles and hadnt loosened up) loved the look of the car inside and out. Heart says this one Honda Accord Exec 2.2td (£150/month inc tax)- FANTASTIC engine, bit big, tramlines badly.

  I just had a big argument with my father. I think it´s an age thing (I am 33 he is 62!). A friend of his had a BMW 323i of ´86 that he changed recently for an almost new Golf 1.4! He soon got depressed with his new car and he is planning to change once more for an Audi A4 1.6 model 2000. Judging from my wife´s A3 1.6 of 2002, I am trying to convince them that the A4 with 1.6 engine is hardly an improvement after the "lazy" Golf 1.4 .

  Bought for 3 grand, cost almost that much to keep it on the road in the first 12 months Jeep Grand Cherokee. 4.0 version expensive to run, possibly in my price range for monthly costings, was surprised to see so many sub £6000 in Autotrader So any thoughts/suggestions? Would love something fast and/or luxurious with leather/air con etc like the Jeep or a BMW/Audi to soften the blow of selling my beloved chipped S3 thanks!
