Cavalier Success 13 Aug 2001 (Forum)
Just returned from a two week tour of France. For reasons too complicated to explain, we ended up taking my wife?s Cavalier (1994, 90K bought for £1,700 about a year ago). It gave faultless service, accommodated four adults and luggage with ease, was smooth and comfortable, had adequate performance and achieved about 37mpg. -
Vectra - Uncomfortable or what ? 30 Apr 2001 (Forum)
Also they have as much grip as a well greased 3 legged pig on an ice rink covered in marbles. and finally they crumple like paper when involved in collisions with a Datsun Bluebird of 1970's origin. anyone care to inform us of other "Characteristics" of this lovely vehicle ? -
Replacement car suggestions 21 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Annual mileage will probably be about 12000. Clearly this kind of usage is not going to sit well with a fairly highly-tuned car that?s already done a lot of miles. Also there?s the fuel economy issue - I have averaged 28mpg since starting the new job - not bad for a 200bhp car, and I get a very good rate for mileage, but I can?t help thinking that I would be substantially better off with a more economical car. -

Directional tyres. 9 Jan 2023 (Forum)
This has only just become a 'thing' for me. For the last couple of weeks, I was aware that the O/S rear tyre on my van was losing pressure, not a huge amount, but enough that I topped it up every morning I was working. Got fed up of this and decided to put the spare on with the intention of either fixing the leaky tyre or replacing it when convenient. -
vw up the basic model - clutch renewal 7 Jun 2019 (Forum)
Hi I've only just joined but I would appreciate any comments on the following I bought a preregistered vw takeup in 2014 and although I don't do many miles each year (4550) since new I am aware of the clutch and gear selection problems These are only just affecting my up and I am now considering changing the clutch when I doe a google search for a up clutch kit I have a choice of several different manufactures with a wide difference in price Can anybody advise me which is the best one to fit I think the underlying problem iis that volkswagen built the up to a low cost specification and as VAG already manufacture the MINI did not want to in direct competition and pitched the cost lower with the result that many of the parts were purchased for the lowest price and have resulted in the problems that early model up owners have .This has now been resolved with the introduction of the new Tsi up models I like the UP and would like to resolve these problems with better items replacing the original rubbish I don't think that a VW approved garage would like to do the work so I will get a local mechanic to change the clutch but which one should I ask them to fit I've changed many clutches in the past normally out in the street using a pair of ramps and a screwdriver to centralise the spline but that was in the 1970's and 80's Any comments would be gratefully received smiffyuk -
Old Van - Earn while I drive 26 Nov 2018 (Forum)
I would welcome further suggestions (the Highway Code is a good source of ideas) and also ask HJ readers for advice as to whether I should franchise this idea, or perhaps just buy a few vans for friends and relations? Once I am into profit I would like to upgrade the windows and windscreen(s) of my van(s). Do readers know of any suppliers of unbreakable windows please? -

Any - Bubble Bubble, Boiling Brake Fluid Trouble. 8 Jul 2015 (Forum)
If you kept driving and feeding more heat into the system eventually you'd heat it all up and I suppose the steam would travel the long, long, narrow, heat dissipating metal pipe to the master cylinder, but meanwhile, you've had a brake failure, and either:- (a) scared the s*** of yourself and stopped. (b) scared the s*** of yourself and crashed. And stopped. Either way you ain't cookin' no master cylinder no more, no how. -

Audi A4 B8 - Should I keep it after a DMF replacement 1 Aug 2013 (Forum)
It seems silly to get rid of the car after 2 years due to depreciation but feel that my hand is forced. An S-Tronic uses a DMF so that would need seem wise. It seems that a Mercedes C Class uses a goold ole torque converter so that may be the way to go - I just don't know if I can live with the boring dash/interior after driving an Audi! -

any - used car problems 28 Nov 2010 (Forum)
No vehicle manufacturer can ignore the power of mass communications nowadays. From when I started driving in the 1970's car reliability was 1970's car reliability, but I have just bought a 2009 car for £7000 instead of its RRP price of £16000 aginst a new car that was £12000 in 1992 (new to new prices) Bigger depreciation now on the korean, but far better equipped and also far better fuel economy than the honda engined rover from 1992. -
Fading sound on my TV. Static or what? 10 Apr 2010 (Forum)
My best guess is that some sort of static is building up somewhere, because there is a lot of crackling when I switch off the telly (tho it's only a guess, so that may be nonsense). Any ideas what I can do to cure this? I would like to be able to ignore the <s>pointless punch-and-judy show</s> election campaign by choice, rather than by being technically excluded from experiencing nauseating parade of duck-billed platitudes. -
New tyres - Prices online vs phone prices 25 Jul 2009 (Forum)
I?ve just had to get some rear tyres for my wife?s car and I am really surprised at some of the prices for these tyres I was quoted. No need to go into details of the car but I asked for the price for Continentals, same size, same speed and load rating for all my quotes. -
Dealing with an insurance claim - help please. 13 May 2009 (Forum)
I looked in my door mirror and watched the van getting closer until it struck my car, gouging deep furrows in the o/s of the rear bumper and lesser furrows in the o/s/r wing paintwork and damaging the door mirror. As I was struck, I gave a loud, sustained blast on my horn as this van scraped down the side of my car.
