Bicycle Racks 10 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I have a Toyota Avensis hatchback and want to transport 2 adult and one child's bikes. I have seen racks on the backs of cars but aren't these usually mounted on a tow bar? My car does not have a tow bar and I would prefer not to have one. Is it possible to buy a rack for the back of a hatchback? I am a bit concerned that a rooftop rack would be very noisy. Does anyone have any views on the best way to transport. -
Self drive car transporter - help! 25 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Unfortunately it has no MoT and only a week's tax, so it needs to be moved quickly, and not under its own power. I think, on balance, I'd prefer to drive a 3.5 tonne Transit than tow a trailer, although as my car has a tow hitch, I could do either, assuming my standard car licence is valid. So, does anyone know a company that could rent me a car transporter, whether a van or a trailer, ideally one that I could pick up in the London area. -
High-quality diesel estate 8 Mar 2002 (Forum)
A friend intends to rationalize his ownership of several vehicles by selling them and buying one durable, comfortable, used estate car. Apart from quality and comfort, his main concern is to find something suitable for towing his vintage boat. He was leaning towards a Mercedes-Benz E300 TD or the like, but has seen cautionary comments from HJ and others about the impact of towing on these vehicles, especially horse boxes. -
Peugeot 5008 - Broken injector holders after new injectors 31 Aug 2019 (Forum)
Last year (in August) I had to let all 4 injectors replaced after they got faulty in a Bosch car service here in Belgium. After couple of months, I got smoke in the engine area with bumpy engine. I towed the car to the same service and they fixed it under warranty (don't know the details but they didn't change any part.). After exactly 1 year, 2 weeks ago, I got the same issue and towed the car again. -
Hyundai Santa Fe - Hyundai Santa Fe autobox failure 11 Aug 2015 (Forum)
It's £216 to send off to the specialist, which is a no-brainer given the alternative of just saying yes to a new one at £5000, but can anyone provide advice? - is an autobox failure common on these models (I hadn't heard of one)? car has a tow bar, so might have done some heavy towing before I owned it, but even so... - is £5000 a reasonable replacement cost? - do main dealers just rip you off - is there a good chance that the specialist will find a cheaper repair? -
Car towed for no tax just after I bought it. 14 Oct 2012 (Forum)
I recently bought a car and as soon as I bought it I got fully comprehensive insurance on it. It has a current MOT but doesn't have tax. It was today towed away and impounded for the no tax. However, the DVLA still don't have it in my name as they say it can take 4-6 weeks to process and that's if the guy I bought the car from sent it off straight away. -
Citroen C6 - Tow-car par excellence 12 Oct 2006 (Forum)
After overtaking a line of trucks I pulled in and settled back to 85 and let him past. Up he steamed and it emerged that he was a Dutch registered Citroen C6 towing a substantial caravan. I tailed along behind him for a while and he was cruising at 95mph, occasionally edging over the ton. I settled back to my 85mph cruise and let him get on with it. I have to say that all the time I saw him he appeared smooth and steady as a rock, even when entering the bow wave of the trucks he overtook. -
Renault Laguna TimingBelt/Steering Probs 23 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Could the tow home by the AA have caused the problem? Or is it 'just one of those things' and we should be happy that that is all we're having to cough up? Needless to say we don't know a great deal about cars so if anyone could shed some light I'd be grateful. -

Reversing Sensors 24 Aug 2001 (Forum)
I have a Ford Galaxy fitted with reversing sensors. The problem is the sensors are 'seeing' the tow bar and cycle carrier bracket that are fitted. Does anyone know if they can be reset or adjusted. -

BMW 3 Series - BMW 320D 2010 Clutch knackered, car wont start! 6 Feb 2025 (Forum)
£1250 Thinking I could hang on until Friday, the clutch went on Tuesday whilst stuck on a small hill behind 3 other cars. AA came again, towed me back and told me "Clutch pressure plate/release bearing collapsed causing pedal to be stuck half way down" I still managed to start the engine but could not change any gears. AA towed me home and today they were going to charge me £120 to tow the car literally 3 minutes down the road! -

VW Touareg - DVLA in a mess? Anyone have information on delays? 2 Aug 2020 (Forum)
The important part is the extra paperwork and medical tests to retain the higher categories on my licence. I drive a Touareg (about 2.5 tonnes) and tow a Hymer caravan (2 tonnes) so the combined train weight is well over the 3.5 tonne limit. In fact the Touareg can tow a 3.5 tonne trailer! Has anyone been down the licence renewal route recently? -
Hyundai Santa Fe - Creaking ow bar 4 Nov 2014 (Forum)
I bought a new Santa fe new generation 18 months ago. I had a tow bar fitted by my local Hyundai dealership and have had nothing but problems with it and the car. It started with creaking on the first time out with my caravan and despite 3 further tow bars being fitted by a combination of Chelmsford Hyundai and Witter the creaking is still there albeit not as bad as it was initially. -
Vauxhall Antara - A round of applause for my Antara 3 Sep 2013 (Forum)
Well it's almost a year old, 7k miles lots of them towing our caravan (yes I can hear you all groaning) Fuel consumption is steadily increasing, I got 30 mpg whilst towing 1.4 tonnes of 'van from Berwick to Doncaster so it's not all bad! Unscheduled visits to the dealer, zero, faults to report at the first service in two weeks, zero. -
Citroen Saxo 1.1 Head Gasket Help 27 Oct 2010 (Forum)
After breaking down and being towed by the AA to a garage in Stoke (not my local area - I live in Bury, Lancashire), I was informed that the head gasket on the car had blown and it would cost £500 to fix. I have since towed the car back home and was wondering if anyone could give me a round about price to have the head gasket replaced. -
