  • Ford 1.8D Start Problem (Again!!!!) 24 Mar 2003 (Forum)
The car eventually starts after a lot of cranking then runs fine all day long, until the next frost - so I replaced the glow plugs. No improvement. I changed the fuel filter. No improvement - in fact the problem has recently got worse and the car now fails to start completely. I have tried bleeding air from filter unit bleedscrew but when turning the engine over there is no fuel coming out (although I can get fuel at the injector unions!).
  • Computed fuel consumption 11 Mar 2003 (Forum)
However the display is continuously responding to throttle opening, as consumption immediately increases when climbing hills, so clearly it is metering the fuel injected - but it doesn't know precisely what the quantity is. Can anyone out there throw light on the method?

Modern engines are not optimised for 99 Octane fuel. They have to have anti-knock sensors that can dynamically advance the timing until pinking occurs and them slacken it off a bit. If they were indeed optimised for 99, they would pink like crazy on 95 and burn holes in the pistons as well as being very gutless and having atrocious fuel economy.

After a short run (under 5 miles) when switched off the car is whiring underneath,I believe this to be burning off excess fuel. Does anyone know if this is necessary , could it be disabled .this must waste quite an amount of fuel over the year. Thanks.
