1st car 23 May 2007 (Forum)
Hello all, im 19 years old, and i need some advice on getting my 1st proper car, i had a citroen AX before but it had to be written off and im now looking for a proper 1st car. i have been looking at peugoet 206 on the trader and i have found nothing within my budget. with only £2000 i would like to get a car with the same characteristics of the 206 with the 'boyish' look. i have looked at clios year:1999+ and havent had much luck, the engine size i was looking at was 1.2 or anything in the insurance group 1,2 and 3. if any one could give me some advice on what to look for next as i need to get a car within 1 1/2 weeks, any help would be great :D thanks Tom -
E32 BMW 7 series 24 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Just been offered an old Bmw 735 E32 1988 7 series for about £700. Tempted to buy it as a second car for a bit of fun, however the car by car breakdown doesn't seem too happy about these cars, suggesting I should get it checked out by a specialist before I part with any money. -
Transfer of ownership 10 Nov 2005 (Forum)
If not I will do it now, but if they need proof of insurance it may be a couple weeks before it is covered. I wanted to wait until I sold my current car before transferring the insurance as I want the cover on the car I am selling for test drives etc. Not driving the new car would also be incentive to get rid of the old one quickly, rather than hanging on for weeks and weeks hoping for that little bit extra. -

My perfect car 23 Oct 2002 (Forum)
The S2 sounds like a car that would be worth trading in my 20V Coupe for, and there are a few around the £7K mark (although they all seem to be in Scotland). Well outside my normal price bracket, but I started listening to Radio 4 at the weekend, so perhaps I'm getting too old for bangers. -
Virtual Buyer 22 Nov 2001 (Forum)
I've put my old car into a local auction (a large operation) and accepted the bid reached. That was 2 weeks ago. On contacting the auction they tell me that the buyer hasn't provided a cheque and the car still graces the auction yard. -
Dummies question. No insurance - test drive a car 27 Jul 2020 (Forum)
Some people have told me that any test drive that you do from a new/used car dealer means you are covered by the dealer's insurance but, um, that sounds more like an old wives tale than legal reality? So what do you do if you do not have a car yourself, and hence no car insurance, but you wish to go and test drive some cars? -
Worst and best makes of OLDER used cars? 10 Nov 2017 (Forum)
This Is Money published what I think is a good list of the best and worst makes of cars, but it only lists what I would consider as "nearly new" cars - under 50,000 miles on the clock, so I would guess perhaps less than 5 years old. Link: http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/cars/article-3039686/Honda-crowned-reliable-car-ninth-time-brand-loved-rich-famous-bottom-pile.html I don't know a lot about cars, but from my personal experience and what I've been told by other people, that list is probably accurate, but I'm wondering how many manufacturers would drop to the bottom of the list if we were talking about the kind of cars most ordinary people buy; ie, under £5000 and 5 to 10 years old. -
Mazda Mazda 6 (2002 - 2007) - Diesel Pump Gone - How To Get It Fixed Cheaper 26 Aug 2011 (Forum)
Hi everyone, I thought best to give everyone a full description of my problem and what to do to get it fixed cheaply Having read so much about this common diesel pump problem it was no wonder after hitting shy of 100k my car started to play up. People have suggested that you can get about 10k out off the car until it dies...with me try 100 miles. It all started last week when the car started to cut out after starting from cold, two or three minutes into my journey once the car was warm everything was fine. -
Volvo 740/760 (1984 - 1990) - Should the garage proprietor also do the MOT's? 30 Oct 2007 (Forum)
I was swiftly ushered away into the waiting room (after so many years I'd got sufficient rapport with the previous staff that I did the second mans job during my tests) and could only watch while the poor old Volvo was subjected to the most severe rogering that it has ever experienced, I kid you not, it took as long for the man to type out the two failure and three advisory sheets as it did for the actual test, I suppose he thought at 21 years old and nearly a quarter of a million miles the car deserved nothing less. -
Old vw beetle for potential restore. 9 Dec 2003 (Forum)
It was really annoying having to stop driving it. A woman in a rover pulled out in front of me and I slid into the side of her car. My car was pretty much undamaged but hers was big time dented and she was making out it was as much my fault as hers. Cue forms to the insurers to try to sort it out, and the temporary loss of my NCD pending investigation. -
Don’t do as I do 27 Sep 2025 (Forum)
While off on a two week Med cruise I bought a car unseen that I wouldn’t recommend to anyone. A friend contacted me for a bit of advice regarding a newer car for her 83yr old dad. He settled on a Kia Ceed 1.0 turbo (he’s not sure which spec) but when I was told he’d been offered £1,000 for the 2013 Ford Focus 1.6 TDCi Zetec he’d had for the last 8yrs I quickly offered £1100 for it. -
Replacement for Toyota Yaris Mk 1 auto 31 Oct 2023 (Forum)
My daughter in laws Y Reg Yaris auto is in need of replacement due to corrosion . The car has been faultless over the five years she has owned it , passing every single MOT except the last one. What other 23 year old car could claim this ? Ideally the replacement must be a small hatchback with a Torque Converter auto box or a reliable alternative. -

Peugeot 308 SW - Carless Driving 24 Feb 2022 (Forum)
3 weeks ago I clipped a car wing mirror and didn't stop. I've received an NIP for driving without C&A. I have a private plate that was applied to the car on the 1st of May last year. My current insurance started on the 2nd of May *with the old reg plate* IE it changed between quote and acceptance. -
Focus v Volvo 22 Mar 2021 (Forum)
I believe the Volvo V40 is based on the same platform, and seems to be roughly the same price. I'm looking to buy a one year old car, certainly less than 2. Will the Volvo share the same platform as the latest Focus MK4? Is the Volvo a better car? It seems to have a 150 PS Diesel engine amongst others. Is this a proven engine? -
17 REG Astra K 1.4 turbo petrol auto stop start - Topping up Battery 3 Mar 2021 (Forum)
Hello, My stop start has stopped working owing to battery suffering from low amount of driving and cold weather. I am getting a message up "low battery start car", which isn't a problem, it starts fine. I want to top up the battery, I only have an old trickle charger with hi/low setting. Is this suitable with the car having stop/start? Also, with the battery being in the boot, which is the best way of charging? -
Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 12-01-2019 Part 1 14 Jan 2019 (Forum)
The difference in reliability between the so called premium European makes, and a decent Far East produced car are enormous. I was chatting to a BMW Mini owner in a car park a few days ago; having noted his new Mini was shiny and my old Mitsi really dirty; I posed the question "How much do you think this has cost me in repairs over the last 10 years". "£5,000", was his guess -

Birmingham to Bournemouth 15 Apr 2017 (Forum)
We are off to Bournemouth on Sunday, after I have performed all of my official duties in the morning! My wife is keen to take her car (Yaris Hybrid) and I am debating whether to take the Logan or the MX5. The Logan would be an easier trip, but less fun when we got there. So the first question, is it a risk to take a 13 year old car on a long trip?
