  • Peugeot 307 SW (2002 - 2008) - 04 1.6 Centre upper brake light 25 May 2009 (Forum)
1st of all this is my first use of a forum so please excuse any faults, I own a 04 reg 307sw 1.6 110 HDI. My problem is I am trying to remove the rear upper centre brake light to replace some bulbs. I have followed the manual and also a haynes workshop manual, these tell you to use two screwdrivers and press down on some lugs beneath some trim inside door frame to release the light unit.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 02 tddi - noise from front on braking/accelerating 7 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Hi there, hope someone can help me as i am a honest john virgin.I have a mondeo mk3 2.0 tddi and every time i accelerate or brake i get a loud noise coming from the front of the car.The noise sounds as if something metal has snapped and does only happen on acceleration and braking.Just wondering if any of you out there have had the same with your mondy as i don't have the spare cash to go down the elimination route.I have already spent £1400 on hp pump , injectors and starting motor.I love the drive of this mondy but it has to be the biggest lemon i have ever bought....cheers....Steve.
  • Volkswagen - "German" brake discs 3 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Bought some brake discs for a Golf from a well-known motor factor chain - "Zimmermann" branded. The box had 'Germany' written on it in several places and German text. The casting and machining looked rather poor when I took them out of the box, I was a bit suspicious, so I took them back.
  • Mazda MX5 (1998-2005) - MX5 brake pad shims 19 Nov 2007 (Forum)
I've just replaced all four discs and pads on SWMBOs Mazda MX5 as it failed its MOT on these items. I have been unable to get the brake shims back in despite making sure that the pistons in the calipers are fully home. I have been doing jobs like this for years and usually manage to get them back in with a bit of juggling! So option one is to use the car for a few miles and see if the initial wear allows sufficient room for the shims which of course they eventually will (the new pads had some abrasive compound on them to clean an old disc.
  • Audi A3 + S3 (1996 - 2001) - 98 T-sport Brake light problem-tracing? 26 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Hi all I've finally figured out why I was getting flashed by other drivers - the brake lights aren't working. I've checked fuses and bulbs (didn't think it would be a bulb as all 3 lights are out and there's no warning signal on the dash). I suspect switch, but would like to make sure there's nothing else I should check or try prior to getting and fitting.
  • C8 rear brakes shot at 20K 7 Feb 2007 (Forum)
The car has warranty until October this year. I'm reticent about taking the car to the dealer with a warranty claim because traditionally brakes are consumable items and they'll sting me for pads and discs while the car is in the garage. But for one pad to wear while the others have meat on them? What do I do, take it on the chin or stamp my foot and say the uneven wear must be caused by a fault?
  • Primera 97 1.6 Preventative Maintenance 3 Feb 2007 (Forum)
I saw that 75W-85 is recommended on here. Very occaisionally it is not keen to go into first/reverse. The brake fluid. It has not been changed since I have had the car. Last MOT my local Independant replaced a small section of corroded brake pipe and said it was not necessary. The brakes work very well. Anything else?
  • Dealer rip off or common sense ? 22 Oct 2006 (Forum)
When my bike visited a Motorrad dealer they changed the brake fluid on a two year old low mileage bike..........the bike has ABS and I viewed that as a sensible thing to do;;; Opinions ?
  • Xantia HDi - Brakes 20 Jun 2006 (Forum)
My 2000/X Xantia estate has an intermittent drumming noise from the front brakes. It's proportionate to wheel roatation (either once or twice per rotation, sounds and feels a bit like the ABS operating but is not related to any possible low traction situation. I'd suspect discs which have a significant lip on the edge and are worn to a depth of 1mm+ on the inboard and perhaps .5mm on the outboard edge.
  • Is ESP Working on My VW? 1 Feb 2006 (Forum)
I saw the light flashing once on a wet roundabout but that may have been a wheel spin issue. I am thinking of the ?helping to control imminent skids by applying individual brakes? mode. The reason I ask, is that my Passat's rear brake discs are needing replacement and I?m wondering if the rear brakes have been working away overtime to limit the under steer? -- I wasna fu but just had plenty.
  • Honda ABS 1 Jul 2005 (Forum)
Tracing faults on abs brakes isn't always easy. A Honda mechanic with an alb (anti lock brakes)tester couldn't find the fault on my honda prelude. He thought that there might be a faulty sensor. The problem: warning light comes on after driving a short distance down the road.
  • Handbrake? What handbrake? Ford Focus 25 Mar 2005 (Forum)
It's not as bad when parked as I always have and always will leave it in gear but I negotiate a lot of traffic lights on hills and I hate leaving the brakes on. In my old Fiesta I simply pulled the handbrake sleeve up and tightened a little nut but I'm sure you don't do that here. Does anyone have any ideas? One other note to consider is sometimes, if I stop and keep my foot on the brake then pull the handbrake up, the brake pedal will go in a touch more without any extra pressure?
  • Mitubishi Colt - Unusual Noise 5 Sep 2004 (Forum)
Hi A few weeks ago I noticed a squealing noise coming from (I think) the rear of the car. I think it was brake-related as gently braking caused it to disappear. This happened a few times. I had the car in for a service, MOT and cambelt change this week and nothing untoward was mentioned to me. Today driving at 70mph on a stretch of motorway I heard a metallic droning noise that I thought was due to a change of road surface or a nearby vehicle.
  • Fiat brake calipers (Punto 1995) 24 Feb 2004 (Forum)
Now I can see that this should give the seals an easier time, but you would have to be careful to make sure the boots allowed the piston to rotate. What do you think. Essential, a good idea, or confusing abs brakes with "conventional" ones.
  • Keeping alloy Wheels clean 13 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Hi folks, using this site as my son is a regular visitor here and it comes highly recommended! I recently got a new car and wanting to protect the Alloys I applied some Turtle wax Brake dust barrier. That was two weeks ago. Last week i washed the car and the wheels, and they looked ok Today when i washed the car the wheels had quite bad black stains on them, presumably from brake dust. the only way i could get it of was to use ColourBack, not something i want to do very often!
  • Changing brakes 22 Jul 2002 (Forum)
I am basically concerned about the number of pots (2 to 4!) and the conversion work required to the brake cylinder. Could anyone give me pointers as to who l need to talk to or info on this. Many thanks, dan
  • Do automatic cars cause traffic jams? 26 Aug 2001 (Forum)
In the normal way of things, if a driver lifts off, his cars will start to slow down by virture of engine braking. The driver behind will realise he is gaining on the car in front and also lift off, and so on down the line (exclude the effect of people driving too close for the moment). An automatic car in this situation will gain on the car in front much faster due to the freewheel effect of the transmission, so driver applies brakes just for a moment to correct his speed.
  • Volkswagen Golf TDI Blue Motion 16 Plate - Electronic Handbrakes 12 Sep 2021 (Forum)
Can anybody tell me please, if the car suffers a complete electrical failure (no lights on dashboard when ignition turned, engine does turnover, windows won’t work etc), but battery is fully charged, whilst the car is parked with the electronic hand brake on, will the hand brake remain on or will it release? Many thanks.
  • Ford fiesta 2006 - Brake fluid went just below minimum 5 Jul 2021 (Forum)
Hi, I recently changed the front calipers on my fiesta and used the 2 person bleeding method. The fluid level accidently dropped below minimum very slightly....

Should carry on driving, properly, for as long as possible, and ignore completely the point and squirt fools who haven't a clue about reading the road ahead. If the brakes have lasted what 13 years and some 90k miles on the originals, then our poster is obviously using the brakes enough to keep the rust from taking hold. A pleasure to see someone capable of skillful nay professional driving, which is sadly a dying art, pray carry on CP.
