  • Diesel load v additives 2 Oct 2007 (Forum)
Having had the use of diesel cars, trucks, farm tractors, and marine engines, in my experience the operators / engineers invariably say that the engines...
  • Mini One or Fiat Grand Punto 9 Sep 2007 (Forum)
I am looking to spend 6k on a car for my wife,i suggested a Mini one and she was keen but now has seen that she can get a pre-reg Fiat grand punto for the same money. My heart says go for a 52 plate 5yr old Mini out of warranty with around 50k miles,my mind says go for the still under warranty 1k miles punto, which is the best to go for?
  • C-Max coolant level 22 Jul 2007 (Forum)
I was wondering how normal it is to have to top up the coolant level, given that the car is only just over a year old, with 12,000 miles.
  • Mondeo - mpg 18 Apr 2007 (Forum)
I bought a 2.2 TDCi 155 Titanium x 5 Dr on a 06 plate about 2 weeks ago; everything else on the car, so far! is fine. However, i've noticed that i'm not getting as good mpg as my last 2.0 TDCi 52 plate Mondeo. The specs of the 2.2 show 46.3mpg (from Ford) yet on my car info display it averages around 39.1 mpg (i have seen a marked increase in fuel used, a trip to my parents would take 1/4 in my old mondeo in this one it is almost half).
  • Galaxy/Espace or Sharan 11 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Looking to spend up to £7000 on a people carrier (almost got a bongo but couldn't part with 7k for a car over 10 years old). Looking at around 99-01 reg, petrol engine i guess as theres not many diesels under 7k and don't do enough mileage to make it a major factor. I quite like the espace but no it's got a pink fluffy dice {next time I delete as its quicker!
  • Selling Jazz CVT 26 Aug 2006 (Forum)
I'm also unsure of value, I had thought around £9.5k but is that a little optimistic. Its not an easy one to price because most 54 plate cars are the old model, and there isn't a great many CVT's around.
  • Fiesta Rust 20 Dec 2005 (Forum)
The rust is visible when the door is closed. I gave it a bit of a scrape and discovered a hole about the diameter of a pencil. The car is ten years old. Is this an MoT failure, bearing in mind that the car passed an MoT recently at a reputable garage. Is there anything I should worry about, should I get it welded or simply give it a squirt of Waxoyl?
  • Worth a call? 25 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Hi all, Got a message on our answerphone from a chap who has apparently bought our old MINI. Seems genuine enough, but I was wondering if by calling him back to have a chat about it I was heading into unforseen peril. The only thing I can think of to try and route out rouge-dom is to call him (withholding our number) and saying I'd called about the car.
  • tyre wear: nsr worn more than osr 15 May 2005 (Forum)
The driver side rear has around 4.5mm left. It's a very noticable difference to the naked eye. Both are Dunlop SP9000s that came new with the car (Yaris). The car's done 48k miles, and is approaching 4 years old. On both tyres, the wear is pretty even across the width, and around the circumference. What could cause this uneven wear? I assume it can't be pressures or tracking, as those would result in uneven wear within the tyre, not between the two tyres, right?
  • Smokey Ford Diesels 26 Mar 2005 (Forum)
My 95 Escort 1.8TD chucks out a fair old smoke. Once up to a cruising speed it appears to die down - its at its worst during acceleration - especially if there's another car behind you with its lights on highlighting the smoke. The car has 78K miles on it - serviced often, uses no oil between services.
  • Getting an MOT certificate 25 Mar 2005 (Forum)
My (nearly) new 10 year old Volvo has just sailed through the first MOT I have had done on it. The last time I had to spend more than about £10-£20 to get a car through the test must have been in about 1989! Am I just lucky? Or just a careful owner?
  • Alfa - Cambelt Woes 18 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Does anyone have (or know of) an official Alfa document number or id that proves this one way or the other. Am I right to expect Alfa or the deale rto meet a good proportion of the cost above (car is 3.5 years old). bit of a long first post so thanks for bearing with me. cheers.
  • Renault Modus 17 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Anyone bought a Modus yet? In this month's 'Diesel Car' magazine it is very well written up. For 10K this seems a cracking little car and certainly it felt thoroughly well built when I went to the dealer today. It seems to have the charm and character of the old Renault Five but obviously better engineered given the newness of the design.
  • Sitting with clutch depressed - good? 5 Dec 2003 (Forum)
The question is, am I damaging something somewhere? Surely I must be stretching or wearing something doing this? On my old car, depressing the clutch in used to stop an annoying rattling; I think someone mentioned it might have been an "idler gear" ? I guess it's been habbit since then....
  • Mondeo TDCi 24 Sep 2003 (Forum)
I have a Mondeo TDCi 15 months old with 26000 miles.Since May it has spent some considerable time at the dealers with a reoccurring fault.ie. Management light comes on and shuts down to "limp home mode". Cold starting is not good with rough running and smoke. The car went in last week for three days came out, ran fine for three days and went again.
  • Hard to value 30 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Well these two certainly were. The Great Trade Centre is well known for shifting highish mileage, mainstream cars from 1 to 4 years old. Anything else and it doesn't really know what to do with them. So what was it doing with these in stock: A 96P Polo 1.4 Harlequin (the one with the body panels in different colours) with 6,600 miles on the clock (!)
  • VW Golf battery going flat 28 Mar 2003 (Forum)
I have a 20 month old Halfords HCB063 "heavy duty" battery in my 1999 Golf GTI (the VW battery lasted 30 months). After parking the car for 4 days there's only enough in the battery to turnover the engine for a fraction of a second.
  • Well fancy that.. 26 Nov 2002 (Forum)
The largest bill for fictious work carried out on a woman's car by garage mechanics was on of £6322.88 by ********** of Stevenage. Calling in for a routine service on her 1 year old Peugeout 305 Mrs June ***** agreed to pay for amongst other things: new trumpets (£752), cracked Gangle Pin (£1785), realignemnet of main glib shaft (£2268), new gromets (£112), set of hexagonal Tag nuts and dangleberry adapter (£35) and new valves (£120).
  • Renault Clio alternator 1 Oct 2002 (Forum)
When asked why a new alternator is needed the only answer I get is, "the alternator is miss aligned". Renault are prepared to pay %40 of the cost of the part. As the car is only 2 1/2 years old and it has only done 15000 miles I feel a little miffed. Has any one else had similar problems the car has a 1400cc 16v engine and was registered in 2000 Hwyl
  • Speedo digits ......... 15 Sep 2002 (Forum)
