  • vw costs (golf GTTDi) 8 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Anyway today was 1st service out of warranty and I was therefore worried. Service was as usual expensive but the recommended repairs were astonishing (at least to me who runs a very old and cheap to look after mondeo) "Wishbone bushes starting to seperate" £319.60 "Rear axle bushes parted" £301.97 "Slight play in anti roll bar bushes" £116.32 Now for a car which runs and drives as well as the day we got it I'm not sure I believe there's any significant problem.

  • Suzuki Ignis and 98Ron Fuel 18 Jun 2005 (Forum)
I've been using Optimax as the only 98Ron fuel around, but now there is a new kid on the block - Tesco super is now 99Ron, and slightly cheaper (86.9p/l in Tesco Extra - Camberley/Blackwater) than Optimax (Around 89.9p/l in Fleet and around 85.9 in Portsmouth). FYI, I've run my 2004 Punto 1.2 16v on Optimax for the last 7 tanks (5 weeks) and it seems to run more responsivly with the 2 tanks of Tesco 99 I've tried so far.. May be worth a try for some of you lot. Mods - sorry if this is technical.

f=2&t=32559 ================================================================ For the continued discussion of what, I have no doubt, will be a long-running topic. As is our way with such things, each thread will be allowed to run to 100 notes at which point it will be closed, locked and restarted. No previous volumes will be deleted and pointers to them will always exist in the current thread; this was always intended to remove the need for endless repetition but has always curiously failed to stop it occurring.
  • astra to be kept to age 10 plus 28 May 2005 (Forum)
My wife has a T reg (1999) 1.6 eight valve Astra estate which we have had since it was six months old. Its only done 26,000 miles but we ensure it gets a good run once a week or so to avoid too many short journey problems. We've had the cambelt changed, do six month oil changes and it has a basic service once a year. Aircon is left on all year with occasional hot and cold runs as recommended by HJ to avoid problems.
  • Mk 3 Astra - Engine Cuts Out When Idling 20 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Anyway it refuses to start again for a few minutes, but just leaving it for this short time does the trick and it starts and runs fine for a while. Seems to make no difference whether the engine is hot or cold. And I never have any problems when on a run etc. The strangest thing is, this can happen several times in one day and then it might not happen again for a couple of weeks.
  • Defective tyre? Worth pushing? 22 Apr 2004 (Forum)
However, when they reinflated it, the sidewall bulged alarmingly and, after discussion, I OK'd the fitting of a new tyre. When I had the puncture I was travelling at about 50mph and the 'run flat' distance was no more than 200 yards. The people who repaired/replaced the tyre commented that they would not have put the sidewall problem down to run flat damage, as there was no visible weat/tear or damage inside the tyre.
  • Golf II misfires when cold 24 Mar 2004 (Forum)
My E Reg 1300 Golf, which apart from being underpowered, has always run really well. When I fired it up yesterday it sounded like it was running on three cylinders only. As it sits outside all night I assumed that it was damp. I sat reving it for five minutes and it seemed to clear as it got warm I then drove into work and it seemed OK.
  • VW Golf MkIII Cutting Out 11 Jun 2003 (Forum)
I have a 1993 Golf GTI and have a persisting problem where it cuts out for seemingly no reason , it's usually when the revs drop and it cannot fight back and keep it idling but it's not all the time. I have taken it to a friend who works for VW who has run it through the computer diagnostics and can find no fault. He suggested I replace the related sensors that manage the fuel/idling as one of these may have been giving a false reading. So started to replace these but it's running expensive, the next one is over £100 and there has been no change so far.
  • Diesel, pertrol or LPG ? Which is best for the ' 20 Nov 2001 (Forum)
For the average punter, running a second hand motor, say 10,000 miles per year, over 3 years, which would be the cheaper to run, say a 2 or 2.2 litre turbo diesel or a 1.8 petrol{similar performance}. I am currently thinking of changing one of my cars.
  • reluctant Xanti TD starting 15 Nov 2001 (Forum)
I tend to use the heater plugs twice and it always starts quite well. It never fails to start if I do this and once started it runs perfectly, but unless I do this it splutters before starting and sometimes produces white smoke with some hunting. A mechanic friend has suggested that it might be running slightly weak but to leave well alone provided it is reliable, as I am averaging about 46 to the gallon.
  • Used 'new' Range Rovers 11 Sep 2001 (Forum)
What do you think? What sort of warranty would Landrover offer on a vehicle of this age? I have done my running cost calculations and maintenance is probably the only scary area. I would go for am M Class 2.7 Mercedes with better residuals, but even next year the 99 models will be well outside my budget.

  • Mazda 5 - New car 9 Mar 2023 (Forum)
Got Mazda 5, 2013 has 52,000 miles. Nice car, runs well with sliding doors. Thought had it for 6 years. I’m spending quite a bit on petrol, thinking whether it’s time to change to a hybrid. Would it save petrol having a hybrid. I would probably look for a car, about two years old.
  • Vauxhall zafira diesel. - Engine stops after 30 seconds 21 Jan 2023 (Forum)
Hello. Car starts and runs 30 seconds and stops. Car for sale and thinking to buy. Not sure if it does it repeatedly. Could it be the tank and sender immersion unit or is there an engine high pressure fuel pump could be to blame?
