  • small or medium hatchback 17 Dec 2016 (Forum)
Looking for a stylish hatchback or maybe saloon with good mpg and fastish( ie as opposed to slowish ...0-60 11sec or less ) ..and all for under £3000 We have sort of drawn up a short list...the obvious diesels Golf ,Audi,Leon,Focus,Civic, I30, Mazda3 ...now before the petrol brigade bang on about diesel vs petrol I have to say ouf of the last 5 cars/4x4's we have had the diesels have been the most economical, most reliable...I even have for our dog an old astra 1.7dti van with 225,000 miles on the clock and its brilliant, never goes wrong, 60mpg ...as far as I understand as long as the diesel has been well maintained, regular oil, serviced etc it should be fine .anyway I digress..is there really any different between the ones I have listed in terms of reliability etc...
  • Any - HJ's Saturday Telegraph annual oil change advice 10 Dec 2016 (Forum)
My 1980 TR7 which now does only a few hundred miles a year has had a mere four oil changes since its semiretirement in1990 and is none the worse for it, its well made engine using virtually no oil at 70,000m.  I have just changed the expensive long life oil in my Audi A8 which was last changed nearly three years and 11,000 miles ago.  I have no qualms about the longevity of its engine which will probably outlast me. What really irks me is the number of old biddies and cash-strapped youngsters, often struggling to bring up a family, doing only a few thousand miles a year and who can least afford unnecessary bills, being influenced by nonsense purported to be 'expert opinion'.
  • That is the question.... - So the kids have left home......... 23 Jul 2016 (Forum)

  • New car for Mrs Happy Blue? 24 Oct 2015 (Forum)
The facelift version of the Juke, doesn't address the boot issue, so I am going to get her to look at the Honda HR-V (although she says she doesn't need a Hormone Replacement Vehicle!), Mazda CX-3 and the Audi Q3. I think I could also tempt her into another Captur, as our family seem to like the one I have.   Any other suggestions?  She wants automatic, SatNav and a reversing camera and style/image is important to her, so suggesting a Kia Venga will not go down well.......Is a Mini Countryman a sensible option?
  • Various - Car purchase add ons 21 Oct 2014 (Forum)
I have been interacting with several dealers whilst selecting the vehicle, in general spending quite a bit of time in particular with a Mini dealer, Audi dealer, and two or three different Fiat/Alfa dealers, before finding the right car (a near mint Giulietta). What is interesting to me and the purpose of this posting is all the add on products they offer at time of sale closure.
  • New Car Help Please. 22 Aug 2014 (Forum)
I have been looking at varoius reviews of cars for weeks now, from 4X4's, Crossovers, sensible family cars but nothing interests me so I think i have narrowed it down to the following, I am looking at stuff about 4 years old and 4-5 door. Golf MK6 GTI BMW 325i Audi A4 2.0T Seat Leon 2.0 TSI FR I have had a test drive in a 2012 Fosuc ST but I have to say I was not overly impressed it did not seem any faster than the 182 even though I am sure it, also did not like the centre console really like the shape mind, but they do cost a bit more than I really wanted to spend.
  • Why do people..... 20 May 2014 (Forum)
come on here, seeking advice about what car to buy, and then with a minmal budget, say that want to buy a BMW, Audi or Mercedes (with respect to Estate Driver). Start Rant Is it just me, but if I had a very modest budget, I would be thinking budget brands.
  • Ford galaxy 1.9tdi mk2 - Ford galaxy goes into limp mode @2500rpm 31 Mar 2014 (Forum)
To all those budding engineers out there I want to share my experience with you :- I set off from work to travel home 205 miles in my trusty galaxy mk2 and noticed I had no power and at 2500rpm around 65mph the car was flat (no power) I couldn't overtake or build up speed so I pulled into the layby I happen to own a cheap £16 diagnostic reader that I also use on my audi a4 it gave me the code 17954 under boosting , upon googling the code it relates to the waste gate not operating or mass air flow sensor fail . Over the weekend I pull the vacuum hose off the waste gate and noticed a split in the hose very small mind but chopped out the bad bit and refitted hose, I erased the codes turned on ignition checked for further codes nothing came up the car now runs right as rain .
  • Ford Focus - Best car to buy? 13 Apr 2013 (Forum)
Is it innevitable that the turbo and dpf filter will go,or is it one of those cars where you can just get unlucky and buy a bad one,as we have a Mercedes M class thats apparently plagued with a tonne of common faults but nothings ever gone wrong in the 7 years we've owned it Could anybody reccomend another car?the Audi a3 is nice but sadly out of price range.

Also when tyres are changed does the steering angle sensor need to be reset (advice on an Audi in  DT 29/9/2012)?
  • Any - New old tyres 8 Sep 2012 (Forum)
-The company (Top Gear in Ellesmere Port) appeared to be doing a brisk business with some expensive kit (Audi RS4 Avant) sitting on the jacks having some preloved rubber fitted. The New tyre/exhaust centre across the road appeared to be much quieter. Sign of the times? So far, I'm a happy bunny. (I expect the deep tread will peel off tomorrow when the blu tac dries... ;) )
  • If Someone Gave you 50k... 1 Feb 2012 (Forum)
again MPG So then i stated looking at sporty yet realistic cars such as the new focus ST due mid 2012, Audi S range and BMW M series. Now originaly i thought this would be an easy task, choose your dream car but then it got me thinking you would never get this sort of money again. so whatever it is you pick you would pretty much have to stick with it.
  • All - Cost of cars rising 14 Oct 2011 (Forum)
To me Vauxhall seem to be in a world of its own on prices, with its new Astra prices at the top end being more expensive than lower end Bmw or Audi. Recently I was offered a new 1.7 diesel Exite Astra, retail £19.500 for £13.995, but when I looked in 'What car' depreciation table, after 12 months the value was £9,950, Needless to say I didn't buy it.
  • Skoda Yeti / VW Golf VI - Dual Mass Flywheel on 1.2 TSI Engine? 23 Aug 2011 (Forum)
Out of curiosity I fired two emails, one to VW and one to Skoda, enquiring whether the Golf VI and the Yeti have DMFs, however the replies that came back were as follows:   Golf VI 1.2 TSI - Single Mass Flywheel Yeti 1.2 TSI - Dual Mass Flywheel   Now, as far as I am concern, the are the same car, and I don't see VW offering two types of gearbox/flywheel/clutch as the reason for acquiring Seat, Skoda and Audi (not quite so much Bugatti and Bentley) were to save cost and having different parts on the same car defies the reason for this.   If anything, I would expect the Skoda with the more basic SMF.
  • Subaru Tribeca or Ford S-Max 2.5T? 30 Mar 2011 (Forum)
As an example, I can buy an April 2007 model with just 16,000 miles for just under £16,000. However I got thinking about alternatives. Without spending fortunes on BMW X5s or Audi Q7s, I had a quick look on Autotrader and came up with some very well specified Ford S-Maxs with the Volvo T5 engine. The only downside is a manual gearbox, but the upside is more space than a Tribeca, economy no worse than my Outback, presumably great performance and some are dripping in features.
  • Citroen C5 - Citroen C5 cat & anti-pollution warnings 3 Dec 2010 (Forum)
[endif]--> Hi all, I'm new to the forum, having favoured audi specific forums for several years.  But I've been helping a friend with his 2.0 16v petrol 2002 C5.  He's been experiencing issues on and off with anti-pollution warning, catalytic convertor warning, ESP light and a bit of kangaroo hopping and at times stalling.

  • Keep the carphounds honest 15 Feb 2010 (Forum)
On the way to Kentish Town early this evening, crossing Edgeware Road at the lights, in the left lane not signalling, was a bit offended by a posh Audi estate which went into the bicycle box a few feeet ahead of me on the right. I wondered if it was going to turn right but couldn't see its signals. When the lights hit green I moved forward. It was a bit slow off the mark so I accelerated.
  • The 155mph electronic limiter. 23 Dec 2009 (Forum)
My understanding is that there is some kind of gentlemans agreement between the big German car firms to electronically limit their most powerful models in order to have half a chance of maintaining de-restricted autobahns. Can anyone verify this? Interestingly, in recent years, more and more cars from Merc, BMW and Audi's ranges have been qualifying for this restricion. It is remarkable that some mid-range diesels are now capable of these speeds with plenty of low-down poke too, it does beg the question - why do people bother with the vastly more expensive top-end performance models anymore?
  • Ford & Poss Vauxhall to offer 5 year warranty 23 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Original thread said "YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST = Ford & Poss Vauxhall to". smokie Hello, yesterday a bloke in the car park Got chatting about my car initially, then buying a new small car for wife and daughters as a run around, but wanted a 5 year warranty backed by manufacturer. I told him that we'd always bought as he was aware, Ford/Vauxhall or German cars = Mercedes/Audi, but seriously considering Hyundai because of the 5 year warranty. He told me to wait a few weeks, and Ford wll in the very near future announce a 5 year manufacturer backed warranty on their smaller cars, eg, most likley the new Ka, Fiesta, poss the Fusion, then the new Focus This will go head to head with the likes of Hyundia as Fords have lost out big time to this manufacture.
