  • Volkswagen Golf GTI - Rough idle 22 Apr 2013 (Forum)
Also had a new exhaust manifold fitted as the old one was blowing severly. No problem starting, cold or hot. No accelleration problems. The car now does not cut out but most of the time the idle drops to around 500rpm then picks back up. This the drop in revs occurs momentarily but on a consistent cycle. Very occasionally the car stops doing this but only briefly.
  • Ford Fiesta 1.25 1996 - Another Overheating Fiesta! 26 Oct 2010 (Forum)
Hi all, read through pretty much all of the overheating fiesta threads now & cant find one that matches my problem. Two weeks ago, driving to work the car started to go into the red, so i pulled over, let it cool down & continued to work. When i got there i opened the bonnet & noticed the heater valve inlet hose looked quite swollen, so i touched it, at the point the plastic pipe it connects to disintergrated, covering me in rather hot, smelly, brown coolant.

  • Citroen Saxo (1997 - 2003) - 1997 1.1 - Limp Home Mode? 23 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Hi There, I have a 97 1.1 Saxo (HDZ) - I bought it for my partner when it was a year old and it has been a great little car. Recent separation meant it coming back to me! Recently I noticed an oil leak coming from the rocker cover seal so with funds a little low (divorce is very expensive!) I bought a Haynes and decided to tackle this and a few other jobs myself.
  • Insurer's mindset???? 2 May 2004 (Forum)
To make sure i could get the damage repaired one way or the other I contacted my insurers for info, explaining I would continue to pursue the company and if that failed I may need to use my insurance to repair the car. I successfully squeezed the necessary amounts out of the skip hire company to repair the car - however - my insurers now record that there is an outstanding claim on my record - despite the fact i notified them the claim would not be pursued as it was settled between myself and the company on a without prejudice basis.
  • International licence insurance query 8 Jan 2004 (Forum)
A friend of mine from another country has just been involved in a car accident. I can go through the ins and outs of what happened another time, but I'm a bit concerned about his insurance situation as the person who caused the accident fled the scene unscathed (and unidentified) and my friend's car is likely to be written off after swerving to avoid the nutter.
  • BMW Cam lifters 9 Jun 2003 (Forum)
This may have come up before but I am a little perplexed with what could be going on here. I have a 1990 BMW E30 (318i) with an M40 engine. I service the car myself completely since I have owned it and have always used the onboard service indicator to determine when the service is due. On the most recent oil change I noticed the valve gear to be unusually noisy (The car has done 146K).
  • Engine Replacement & Mileage Setting 3 May 2003 (Forum)
Now I know that there was some damage done to the engine when the head gasket blew, so my question is this; if the engine was not repairable and was instead replaced with a 'second hand' engine, would the clock be set to the replacement engine, or should it still reflect the mileage that the chassis has covered? The guy didn't seem to be too bothered, but I did give him the name and number of the dealership I sold the car to. TIA Will
  • Mini Cooper F56 (9/14 reg) - Brake pad replacement Mini Cooper F56 17 Jun 2017 (Forum)
In particular, if front pads for an R56 can be supplied AND fitted for a total cost of £115, why does it cost £102 +VAT just in labour charges to fit front pads on an F56 Before anyone goes down the "all Mini/BMW dealers charge top dollar...go to an independent and get the pads from Euro Parts etc. etc... yes I know that, but when the car is still under warranty, is covered by  a 5 year/50,000 mile TLC pack (from new) and is in for its first (TLC covered) brake fluid change PLUS the latest "Quality enhancement " (aka recall) for the axial bearing shells on crankshaft...and the dealer does a vehicle healthcheck and calls at 4pm and says "front pads 99% worn, rear pads 80% worn..and I can replace all of them by 5pm ........what would you do.......you wouldn't spend half a day getting other quotes would you ??
  • Referal Fees to be Banned 24 Sep 2011 (Forum)
"Honest motorists are seeing their premiums hiked up as insurance companies cover the increasing costs of more and more compensation claims. Many of the claims are spurious and only happen because the current system allows too many people to profit from minor accidents and incidents."
  • FIAT Doblo - FIAT Doblo 1.9 in JTD & MJ forms – consumption 2 May 2010 (Forum)
I thought that maybe the engine needed ‘loosening up’ (I’m an old style motorist who can recall cars having to be ‘run-in’), as the MJ had only covered 27K over 3 years, and being based outside Inverness was unlikely to have had many high-speed runs !   So now the MJ has covered at least 1500 miles at 70’ish, and is also revved to 3500 regularly when changing up.
  • Renault (Grand) Modus - Cabin air... 25 Jan 2022 (Forum)
I'm looking to buy a car that doesn't affect me. I experience no hint of a reaction in a Smart car btw. I assume this is because the engine is in the back and the incoming air goes nowhere near the engine. So I could (and may yet) buy a Smart... but I can't think of a car I dislike more!!
  • Mazda 6 Tourer - From company car to car allowance 25 Dec 2019 (Forum)
Family situation is that I have two young children aged 2 and 5 and all their gear and family down in Somerset and Devon meaning regular car fulls, bikes etc. Visiting them. The Mazda was ok for size but proved very unreliable needing two new turbos, a replacement engine and had various electrical and sensor faults luckily all covered under warranty so past experience rules out another Mazda.
  • Picking a new family estate 27 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Wife is hankering after a new family estate car - "something with a bit more poke" - so we are chewing over various possibilities. Requirements are: 5 seats - 3 children (7,5,2), so space for two booster seats and a car seat required. Decent load carrying capability - present car is previous version Mondeo (enormous), and we can easily fill that to the load cover, even for a few days away (having said that, travel cot gone, pushchair on the verge of going, so we could cope with something a bit smaller!)
  • Polo - wheel coming adrift! 27 Jul 2006 (Forum)
I got up to about 30 mph and thought a wheel would fall off! I stopped, removed the front near side wheel cover to find the wheel nuts almost undone, and the wheel close to coming adrift!. Rang garage again, took pictures, jacked car up, tightened wheel and drove to garage. I have been good customer of this garage for about 10yrs, with 2 cars being maintained by them.
  • OMEGA HELL 5 May 2002 (Forum)
With this information I left the car to a mechanic, and entrusted him with the work. He seemed unsure how to do the work, as it involved removing the timing belt on the engine. To cut a long story short, which involved at least 40 phonecalls to him, and at least 8 temporary cover notes (costing 15pounds each) I finally took the car back.
  • BMW M6 Convertible - Garage Liability for repairs? 29 Sep 2020 (Forum)
They did give me a 3 month warrenty with it but that only covered £500 towards the oil pump. Can anyone please advise if I have a leg to stand on - and how do I get the email of the M.D. (Mahmood Fazal) to write to.  I am prepared to take to small claims if anyone thinks I have a case?
  • BMW 3 Series - Dealer not refunding £500 deposit 24 Jul 2014 (Forum)
I then asked him to forward me a copy of their contract but he refused.  His argument was that the car had cost them money in getting it ready for sale and they would lose out.  I referred him to section 57 above but he was having none of it.   I now need advice on how to persue this and any help would be greatly received.
  • Honda Accord iCDTI 2.2 - Reconditioned Engine: Fuel Leakage & Not Pulling 5 Aug 2013 (Forum)
They have returned the car to me saying they will call me if they find out what the diagnostic code means.  They will however not tell me the code.
  • Renault Espace (2002 - ) - 05 2.2 EGR, loss of power, management light, oil l 23 Jun 2012 (Forum)
In six months I have been through two EGR valves, prior to the last change oil was finding its way out of the valve connection to the induction pipe/hose and of course was loosing oil though not at a tremendous rate - also along with this the management light would come on under mid to high load and the turbo would cut out until the engine was turned off. Took the car to a specialist and eventually to a main dealer who both diagnosed that the EGR valve (the second by this time) needed replacing as this was causing oil to be drawn through. Valve changed pipes cleaned and all was well for about 1-2 months then exactly the same problems happen again with the adde bonus of oil appearing somwhere out the top of the engine as the underside of the air intake box is covered.
