  Anyhoo, the dismantling and cleaning of the carb seems to have stopped it roaring from cold (the main thing that was annoying me) and the car is running okay (touch wood). I'm going to do all the other stuff myself - dizzy cap, rocker cover gasket etc. But the inlet manifold looks a bit tougher - what with all those vacuum hoses I'm loathed to remove the carb myself.

I'm now aware that the emulsion also builds up on the inside top of the rocker cover, so my quick paintbrush clean has to be supplemented occassionally by cleaning that out too. She does about 4 miles a day in the car to go to work, 2 miles there and two miles back. I know there is significant risk in this, and longer journeys would cause any water in the oil to be evaporated.
