A tiller, the hunt

In May this year we bought a Vauxhall Meriva, first registered in January 2008. We have had a small number of minor faults that were dealt with to our satisfaction, by the dealer who sold it to us, however the latest problem we’ve had was a groaning noise when turning the steering wheel when setting off or reversing. This has resulted in the need for a new steering rack (when it comes). It will be covered by the manufacturers warranty, but have you any idea why such a drastic solution to the problem is needed in a car of this age?

Standard Meriva problem. Lucky for you it occurred when still under warranty. Many owners have not been so lucky.
