SUV - Help on How many KM on a used car 13 May 2021 (Forum)
I also need something for lugging stuff which includes 2 elderly Grandparents comfortably. Originally I had my sights on a mini SUV like the Honda HRV but I am thinking a compact SUV like a RAV4 or a Honda CRV is a better value. I also giving a lot of thought into a Hybrid. I think my budget will be in the low-mid 20Ks I have never bought a used car, the Jazz was bought new. -

Volvo V50 2.0 R Design - Volvo V50 2.0 R Design - Change of circumstances 29 Jan 2012 (Forum)
Anyway, my wife is changing jobs so we will lose the BMW. We will probably buy something small for her, most likely a mini as that is what she has always wanted, but the question is what to do about the Volvo. So advice needed in two parts: The Volvo MPG is poor, so should I change it for a more fuel efficient car or should I hang onto it on the basis that changing the car would cost more than the fuel efficiency gains over the next 4 years? -
New car for SWMBO. Any thoughts 21 Mar 2009 (Forum)
BMW 3 series coupe....I honestly just don't get BMW's (apart for a perverse hankering after a 1999 or thereabouts 7 series!) they look nice in gold though! Mini: Plus points: the wife really likes them. Negatives: seems to be reliability issues? Saab 9-3 convertible: I think we'll have to test drive one. The only time I've sat in a 9-3 it seemed incredibly cramped and claustrophobic inside. -
Young driver- help with first insurance, first car 17 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Does anyone have any recent experiences? He?s currently insured as a provisional licence holder on my wife?s Mini One and this adds £750 to her premium of £160 (Post Office) but they are not willing to insure him in his own name and we don?t want to ?front? him. I expected £800 - £1000 but £1700 seems ridiculous. -
Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - 02 1.9 TDi 130 - Misfire advice needed 15 May 2008 (Forum)
All seemed fine until I tried to overtake a car and found I had no acceleration left - the car had no pull, it felt like a 1000cc mini or something. I did all the usual things, turning the engine off, waiting, restarting, etc. Nothing made any difference. It stayed that way until I spoke with a friend who said to take the petrol cap off and start the engine, so I did that and funnily enough it worked and all power came back to the engine. -
Ford Fiesta (2002 - 2008) - A question for Screwloose & other 'old-time' mechs 15 Mar 2008 (Forum)
I've been flipping back, reading through some old posts, in both the General Discussion and Technical rooms, and I've got a question for Screwloose and any other mechanics who predate the era of pervasive engine management systems. My own car-owning history only goes back 20 years or so; I began with an '82 1.0L Mini and I'm currently running around in an '03 plate Fiesta TDCi. Whats striking for me, as a not-very-good fixer of cars, is how little it seems 'modern' garages can actually do in the way of fault diagnosis that isnt computer-driven- and more importantly, how often these diagnostic tools can prove to be wrong. -
Magic roundabout/bad music for driving 4 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Only somewhat soporofic, though I decided to avoid the M1, because I was worried about delays from the roadworks, and it probably didn't aid my comprehension on our diversion through Hemel Hempstead. Satnav doesn't really handle magic roundabouts very well: it should just say "Exit on the fourth mini roundabout", but instead you got a succession of "take the second left on the roundabout, straigt ahead". In the end I managed to go round it twice before finally escaping... Noticed many drivers decided to make a dash for it, not really paying attention to give way to the right, partly because many of the drivers on the right were rather confused by it all. -
FWD transmission noise? 13 Jun 2002 (Forum)
The noise occurs when turning at slow speed with about 3/4 lock or more applied while accelerating (eg car parks, mini roundabouts, etc. The noise is a continuous, whining/grumbling noise (ie not a clicking CV joint type noise). It never occurs when the accelerator is not pressed, regardless of speed or amount of steering applied, and this applies whether the car is under engine braking or coasting. -
Defending BL/Rover 2 Jul 2020 (Forum)
I just don’t think Honda really knew what to do with Rover itself and never understood the market for the new Mini which was already well under way when BMW arrived. Sadly the remnants were taken over for the price of a packet of fags by a bunch of conmen and creative accountants who only wanted to feather their own nests for as long as possible. -

Reborn classics - your choices? 5 Aug 2009 (Forum)
BMW Z8 - I know, never a great car, and pretty recent, but it looked gorgeous. Now, we just need to sort out the handling issues... Mini (the lowercase Issigonis original). I really, REALLY don't need to explain. Issigonis' even more visionary X9001 - see http://www.aronline.co.uk/index.htm?ado17storyf.htm - would also be fantastic.
