  • Gap Ins. or tracker 27 Jan 2004 (Forum)
On a previous car I have had gap insurance (where, in the case of a total loss the gap between insurnace pay-off and original price is filled). I have also had tracker monitor on an Audi S3 a couple of years ago. This time, I'm being offered a three year gap insurance policy for just under £500. Or I could have a tracker installed (£409 plus £100 per year for future years). I guess that as the garage are keen to sell me gap that they must be making nicely on it.
  • New or Used? 12 Sep 2003 (Forum)
My current thoughts are: New: Honda Civic Type R Mini Cooper S Seat Leon Cupra R 225 (I can go a little higher than £16k) Used: BMW M3 EVO (98 r/s 40k miles) Audi S3 - (2 years old less than 40k miles) Merc CLK 320 (98 r/s 40k miles) What do you all think?
  • MotorEasy extended warranty 26 Oct 2002 (Forum)
Unsurprisingly, all exotica are excluded (including the Fiat Croma), and higher premiums are required for large BMWs, Jags/Daimlers, Land Rovers, Audi Quattros/Turbos/V8s, Alfa V6 and turbos, Renault 25 Turbo and Safrane, and the Rover 825 -- which I guess says something statistical about not only maintenance costs (Merc and Lexus are in the same bracket in that respect) but also reliability.
  • company car options 8 Oct 2002 (Forum)
The job image means it couldn't be a banger and would need some image so I have been looking at BMW, Audi, Merc, VW, Saab, Volvo, Honda etc. I would prefer 5 doors or an estate but that's not crucial and I have about £5,000 capital I can afford to spend up front. I have been to the local auction to check out what you can get for the money.
  • Body repair - a fair price? 30 Aug 2002 (Forum)
I asked a body shop to quote me for repairs to my Audi Coupe, which was scraped down one side by a hit and run driver. It has a deep scrape on the upper side of the rear wing and door, and scuff marks to the corner of the rear bumper and spoiler. No panels to replace - the bodyshop intends to beat out the damage, skim with filler and then blend in the repaired areas (which will be pretty close to respraying the RH side of the car).

  • VAG Diesels 11 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Interesting comment in today's Sunday Telegraph that the Audi A3 diesel sound like a load of nails in a food processor. Couldn't agree more. I tried a new A4 Avant with the 130bhp PD engine yesterday and I couldn't believe just how bad this much-vaunted engine really is - noisy, unresponsive and downright uncouth with teeth rattling vibration through the steering.
  • Diesel heater plug bodge 3 Jan 2002 (Forum)
This modification cost me £10 in parts and took about an hour to fit. Only recommended for old bangers though - it won't do the residual value of your X reg Audi A4 TDi much good.
  • Wiper blades - how often to replace? Which makes are best? 26 Jun 2023 (Forum)
The OM ones on our Peugeot are nearly 4yrs and 20,000 miles old and show no sign of deterioration.  I have not had to replace the ones on my 17yr old Audi during my 9yrs and 25,000 miles of ownership; I have no idea how old they are.  They might well be original as there is no record of replacement in its service history.  'Buy the best (you can afford), make it last'  has always worked for me, but how do you apply this to wiper blades?
  • Torn between a Passat and an A4 Avant- HELP!? 9 Oct 2021 (Forum)
I have also spotted a 2016 2L petrol A4 Avant with 25k miles which I love - but for some reason I feel it is not the sensible choice. If we keep the car for 3 or 4 years, I feel it will be easier to sell the Audi and it will hold its value better but then again, PHEVs seem to be getting more popular so I have just been going round in circles. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks!
  • What is the best car for me? 13 Oct 2020 (Forum)
Been looking at Volvo V70/XC70, Ford focus estate, pegeuot 207 estate, mercedes and bmw, audi too. Cann't make a decision.  Ideally I don't want another project, so something which is reliable and good on the motorway runs. I know any car could be good or bad and depends heavily on its service history and any future maintenance.
  • BMW 3 Series Compact - BMW Owned from New to Scrap 11 Aug 2020 (Forum)
The question we are both left with is that our mileage does not justify the cost of a new car but just how reliable are BMWs, Audis and Mercs as they get older? This is the only car in over 50 years of driving that has ever failed to complete a journey. We will celebrate the memories with a bottle of fizz in the sun later.
  • What if I can't have a home charging point? 26 Nov 2019 (Forum)
Hi All Apologies up front for what will seem very basic questions, but I am new to the EV scene and even newer to the forum. The time has come to replace my 2013 diesel Audi A6 Avant, and I want to be cleaner around town so am looking at getting an EV of some sort.  Sensibly I have started with looking into a home charging point, as I live in a first floor flat in a rural manor house, but have been told by 3 providers that as we don't have a designated parking space written into our flat lease, they can't install anything.
  • Something interesting for £7k ? 21 Mar 2019 (Forum)
So most likely candidate is BMW E92 330i, post 2008 when the new gearbox was available. I quite like the Audi A5, the 2.0l TFSI engine would appear to be pretty good, but what about the gearbox ?  Any thoughts on the durability of the above and any other suggestions gratefully received.
  • Vectra 3.2 auto estate - want a cheap fast estate 12 Nov 2018 (Forum)
Presently in a Saab convertible and it's the devil's job getting baby seats in the back! Are Audis, Mercs, BMWs overpriced?  I've never bought them. I had a Volvo once and I find them a bit cramped, should I give them another go?  Who have I missed out... Skoda? Oh yeah then there's Honda, Toyota and that crowd.
  • Amusing.. Stopped - for Failing to block a box junction. 25 Sep 2018 (Forum)
I stopped at some traffic lights in the centre lane at North station, Cochester, as the exit i wanted only had space for 2 cars occupied , and if i had proceeded would have obstructed traffic coming across the junction from my left and right. Several cars tooted and passed on the right (large dark Audi) and left (small black kia) Explained, .... We thought there was space... (coming from a different direction) Appears explanation accepted, but said i would not obstruct a box junction as then i would be at fault.
  • Hyundai Santa Fe - change of car - dire warnings against diesel? 6 Aug 2017 (Forum)
Works out at £750 depreciation per year, not too bad I think. Anyway, HJ commented on a letter about 6 weeks ago, some bloke had a big Audi diesel, and HJ issued horrific warnings about impending bills because of the car's complexity and legislation requiring this "upgrade" or that "fix" or whatever, running into many thousands.  However there are many adverts for diesels on Autotrader for diesel cars The question is, would I be mad for buying a reasonably powerful diesel for towing a medium size caravan?
  • Volkswagen Polo GTI - PCP - trade in early or not? 30 Jan 2017 (Forum)
I recently found out that my partner and I will be having a baby in September (ish), and so I'm contemplating trading in early for a bigger car.  I was hoping to move on to something a lot nicer, eg Jag XE / audi s3 but with baby on the way I'm thinking of keeping costs down a bit and sticking with a more modest skoda octavia vrs.  They are currently phasing out the old model so have a good deal on it at the minute, 0% Apr and 2000 deposit contribution means I'd pay roughly £40 a month more than do for the polo.
  • First Company Car - how do I choose?? 23 May 2014 (Forum)
Basically I will be doing a daily 100 mile round trip commute, plus additional business miles, being 6'4" I will need a comfortable car which I can get satnav, bluetooth, etc I don't want to pay any extra personal contributions, so I can choose anything up to the size of Mondeo, Insignia, Passat etc or looking smaller Audi A3. BMW seems to require personal contribution, as would A4. Do I go for the bigger Mondeo, Insignia size or drop down to the Focus, A3 level? Got a Focus at home at the moment, fine car, but not sure it would provide enough comfort on my 500 miles a week?
