  • New minimalist car 16 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Whilst coming to terms with all the gadgets and creature comforts which make driving easier I am thinking what you actually need on a car, what can you do without? Do you need a rev counter or air con, heated seats and radios, turbos, multi changers cruise control etc etc. any market for a car with no frills? just the bits to make it go and stop and lights to show you the way at night. when its hot wind down windows and when its cold you just wear extra clothes.

Hi there, I have recently purchased a Fiat Punto 1.2 Active Sport 03 plate and it has a cassette/radio in, well i do not own any cassettes and want to put a CD player in, does it have to be the same make that is in now - blaupunkt - or can i put any in, because the size of them are quite big and i don't want there to be a big gaping hole.
  • Honda Jazz/Fit (2001 - 2008) - First MOT 21 Feb 2009 (Forum)
On the way home I noticed that the small display panel in the centre of the dash had been wiped clean. The display is for radio/time/cd information normally. My housekeeping is not all it could be, I know, but why clean it? Were they so offended by my lack of dusting or can they access some sort of extra diagnostic info by way of a hidden menu?
  • Help. Am I getting old? 18 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Evening, Taking my boys to school this morning, it came on the radio that around 20% of all children think their parents drive to fast. So, I ask the question. "Do I drive to fast"? The answer was no from both of them so Im sitting there feeling quite good about it.
  • Look & Learn (a pictorial journey into the future) 3 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Describing the transport of the city of the future says:- "here is the terminus for passenger-bus-trains, individual passenger vehicles and VTOL aircraft. From here too, incoming motorists are directed by radio to areas where parking is available ." Now for the funny bit "A control system regulates all incoming traffic reducing congestion to a minimum" The heady optimism of the late 60s eh ?
  • Nissan Navara d22 Frontier (2002 - 2005) - CD stuck in Clarion CD Player 22 Sep 2007 (Forum)
The question is - is this an affordable repair - should I get the dealer to do it or a car hifi specialist. Would it be cheaper / better to just replace the radio / CD player. Any views much appreciated
  • Green driving? 17 Apr 2007 (Forum)
I've been hearing these adds on the local radio about how to reduce emissions etc. One thing they said is that we should change up gears earlier. Is this true? I know this can be true, but if you're using the gears correctly I thought higher revs isn't necessarily worse.
  • Failing battery in Focus remote? 3 Mar 2007 (Forum)
We've noticed, over the past few days, that the range of the remote (radio) locking key to SWMBO'S Focus seems to be getting much reduced. As the car is coming up to 5 years old, we suspect that the battery in the key is dying. Instructions in the manual seem very straightforward for changing the battery, but can anyone tell me if there any additional things to watch out for - for example, in some cars you have to change the battery within "x" seconds otherwise the code is lost.
  • Mondeo Central Locking 28 Sep 2006 (Forum)
A bit of a strange one this, but when using the central locking feature of a 1997 MK2 Mondeo it locks and then unlocks again within one second of locking. This happens if using the remote which is the radio wave type rather than infa red or the key it does not seem to make any change to the situation. When the locking is engaged you can see the internal handle go inwards is if it is locked but then it pops out again into the unlocked position.

  • THB Bury car phone kit 3 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Before buying an adapter for my current phone (around £50) I dug out an old nokia 3310 to see if it all worked. When I get a call the radio will mute but I can't hear the phone ring and when answered the caller can hear me but I can't hear them. Does anyone have this system? should the sound come through the car stereo? Thanks
  • ford 6000 external audio input 7 May 2006 (Forum)
Is is possible to plug a portable music player into a Ford 6000 Radio/CD ? The unit is marked as being "CD changer compatible". I take it therefore, that this unit is capable of taking input from an external audio source. I know there's those FM transmitter things, but I was thinking of a simple lead from the back of the unit, ending in a standard 3.5mm audio plug.
  • Speeding (mostly excl cameras) Vol 38 29 Jan 2006 (Forum)
On Radio Lacal today, anyone being awarded points for exceeding the 30, on the Luton ring road, near the Toyota dealership, can possibly have them removed. It appears, the street lighting spacing & oblgatory repeater signage isn't in existence - never has been.
  • So we do have traffic police -- official 26 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I quote verbatim from a recording of the unappealing You & Yours consumer programme on BBC Radio 4, 19/01/06. Interviewer: ". . . but what about the argument that these cameras have replaced traffic police and that the cameras are missing some of the worst offenders . . . Steven Ladyman, "Roads Minister": "Well that's fallacious . . .
  • Ebay CD player for a 2002 Vauxhall Astra 14 Dec 2005 (Forum)
I should like to buy a CD player from ebay to upgrade the current casette/radio I have in a 2002 Astra (dash display and steering wheel controls). What concerns me is that most are supplied with the code but no mention of a manual. When I first bought this car it took me ages to workout how to enter the code Etc and I don`t think I would have managed it without the handbook.
  • 70mph and CO2 reduction 15 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Broadcast on Radio 4 this morning... "That the government may crack down hard on motorway speeds above 70mph as part of the aim to reduce greenhouse CO2 emissions as there is scientific evidence that above this speed the level of CO2 emissions of vehicles increases dramatically" It was also said that this was "politically sensitive" Not half.
  • Passat 2001 Battery Removal 24 Jun 2004 (Forum)
If so, do the wipers have to come off? 2) Are there likely to be problems with the car electrics/electronics? I know that the radio will have to be recoded but is anything else likely to be affected? I'm reluctant to go to a VW dealer because of their ridiculous prices. Thanks.
  • End of the road for the Astra...... 12 May 2004 (Forum)
......stereo? (It's ok Hugo, you don't have to go into rehab yet! Car, fingers crossed, is ok.) Radio-cassette today has done a strange thing, It comes on for a few seconds, and then emits an extra-terrestrial raspberry sound for a bit, and then packs in. Keeps doing it. Is it terminal? Could it be a loose connection?
  • Peugeot 206 1.4 18 Apr 2004 (Forum)
Driving home to London from Manchester yesterday heard what I thought was road noise. Switched off radio to hear low pitched noise similar to child trying to play first notes on a recorder or a bit like wind coming under the bonnet! It was intermittent then was accompanied by a squeaking noise coming from front passenger side of car.
  • Annoying Cavalier Noise 31 Mar 2004 (Forum)
The noise does not seem to correspond to suspension or steering movement, its more of a tapping noise than a knocking, steering/suspension type noise. Has anyone else experienced this - it seems to be getting worse and the radio is having to be turned up slightly more as each day passes!
