  • vauxhall vectra cdti 150 - wheel brg noise only at 40mph?? also slight clunk 6 Nov 2010 (Forum)
I thought the noise would get worse with speed but it goes completely, also sometimes theres a slight clunk from the front when i release the brake pedal, only half the time, usually after braking fairly hard then releasing. Finally the brake pad light is on but all the pads are new, any ideas on these? Im kind of baffled, cheers
  • Citroen Xsara - Wheel wobble under braking 25 Oct 2010 (Forum)
The wifes got an 02 plate Xsara HDi, and since we bought it about 3 months ago, there has been the most annoying wheel wobble under braking. Some times it was so violent, you would have thought the wheels were going to drop off. Since buying it, the following have been changed: Front discs and pads N/S front spring New front tyres Now the wobble seems to be at a specific speed, 30-40mph, but is not apparent under acceleration or cruising.
  • Peugeot 306 - Genuine brake parts vs branded 12 Aug 2010 (Forum)
Quick question... Does anybody think that brake pads / discs from the dealer are superior to branded parts such as mintex / ferodo etc. The reason I ask is that my car only just got through the mot with the handbrake with new pads, discs, cable fluid and re con calipers.
  • Skoda Octavia I (1998 - 2004) - 02 1.9 Pedal sinks to floor after brakepad change 31 Oct 2009 (Forum)
Hi all.. Advice gratefully received for the following question.... Changed the front brakes on my Octavia 1.9 Tdi today, but after bleeding the system the brake pedal can be pushed to the floor when the engine is running... With the engine off the pedal has a little more resistance, but can still be pushed all the way down...
  • Audi A4 B6 (2001 - 2005) - 03 1.9 ECU remap. Do I need to upgrade brakes etc? 1 Oct 2009 (Forum)
    3. Do any other engine components or car parts need to be upgraded to remain safe, e.g suspension, brakes etc (assuming all currently at original factory spec)? 4. Price of remap is £300 - sound about right? Thanks
  • FIAT Panda 4x4 (2005 - ) - 08 1.3 Preferred method of changing brake pads? 23 Jun 2009 (Forum)
In particular, when pushing back the brake piston. In recent years I have adopted a technique, particularly with cars equipped with ABS, that prevents flow of hyrdaulic fluid back up the hydraulic system, as I'm led to believe this can damage the ABS.
  • Mazda Mazda 2 (2003 - 2007) - 2004 1.25 Brake drum nut torque 3 May 2009 (Forum)
Also there doesn't seem to be any internal oil seal to prevent grease from the bearings getting on to the brake pads. This is progress?? Many thanks for any help
  • Stupid double rear fog lights 2 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Lot of fog this morning, so thought I'd spot cars which still have two rear fogs as I cycled to work. Top of the list of design brainlessness - Range Rover Sport; right next to the brake lights. I suppose it's so large it wouldn't notice someone ploughing into the back because they didn't notice the brake lights come on. Also, new Peugeot, although these are quite well separated from the brake lights.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 1998 1.4 Front Brake Pads 23 Sep 2008 (Forum)
I'm just changing the front brake pads on my 306. It has the Bosch calipers fitted, the pads I've removed have a hole at the top and bottom of the pads with a spring tensioner fitted in them. I've bought replacement pads from Halfords, I double and triple checked the park reference, 98 bosch caliper fitting (been caught out before at Halfords) I checked both Halfords own and the Ferrodo pads, and both now seem to use a different system.
  • FIAT Punto II (1999 - 2006) - 04 1.2 Handbrake warning light intermitent show 29 Aug 2008 (Forum)
My wife's Punto has developed an issue where when you brake hard the red handbrake warning light comes on sometimes for 5 or 10 seconds and then goes out. I've checked the brake fluid which is OK and the the handbrake lever was fully down when this happened.
  • Volkswagen Polo III (1994 - 1999) - 97 1.9 diesel, brake light failure. 19 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Hi All, I have a 97 1.9 Diseal polo whose brake lights have failed I have checked the bulbs and fuses but both seem to be ok - Any ideas on what else it could be? Also the engine starts fine from cold but won't restart when hot - i had the starter motor replaced in Feb and the car normally restarts fine when it has cooled down a bit but im baffled?!
  • Mitsubishi Grandis MPV (2004 - ) - 2005 2.4 auto - How to upgrade the brakes 30 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Car - Mitsubishi Grandis 2.4 Auto 2005, running on Warrior Alloy wheels - another question. Love the car in many ways, but have never been happy about the brakes, they just don't feel powerful enough for the size and weight of car. At times especially in wet I feel they could not be depended on if needed in an emergency. Can they be upgraded? bigger disks?
  • Nissan Primera III (1999 - 2002) - No shim on one back brake pad 12 Sep 2007 (Forum)
A quick internet search refers to the shims as anti-rattle or squeal. I am therefore hoping the car is safe to drive? 80 mile round trip tomorrow. They are Lucas brakes on a 2.0 Xreg if that makes any difference?
  • New tyres - why put them on the back? 23 Aug 2007 (Forum)
It seems to me (as a complete non-expert) that the new ones should go on the front: better grip under braking, more tread to clear water in the rain and clear a path for the rears, and if you rotate them at half-life, then probably more even wear. Plus aren´t the rear brakes only used during extreme braking?
  • Faulty ABS - MOT failure? 6 Jun 2007 (Forum)
The dealer said it would need new sensors and new drive shafts leading to a whopping £700 bill. Since normal braking is fine, I don't want to fix it. But is it going to fail in MOT? There is a single red warning light on dash showing [(!)(P)BRAKE] altogether. As soon as parking brake is released the light goes off.

  • It's a mystery! (206CC Brake reserv.) 21 Mar 2007 (Forum)
My Colleague's 02 206 CC suffered a loss of brake fluid last week. Took it to Peugeot, who were surprised to find the fluid reservior had a split in it. They claim they've never seen this happen on a 206 before. (Wasn't too expensive to repair c. £40) The Servo was replaced a month ago, and she has been driving over rough ground recently.
  • Golf Brake Discs (again) 15 Dec 2006 (Forum)
I took my car for it's MOT today at a non-VW independant garage and it failed again (see last year) because the front brake disks were 'excessively pitted' (the rears were OK). I decided to have them replaced but I have kept the old discs. On inspection both discs have got corrosion on the inside only, on about 50% of the usable disc.
  • Inner disc damage - 1997 Mondeo 2 Jan 2006 (Forum)
When i stripped them down to replace the pads i cleaned the 2 fescilized stubs and lighted greased them with LM grease, could this be stopping/hindering the reactive action of the outer pads?? Car is a 97 Mondeo, brakes lock up well, and pulls up in a straight line with no obvious brake mismatch.
