  • Used Car - Audi A4/3 Series/Saab 93/VW Passat?? 10 Apr 2008 (Forum)
    - Saab 93, ~45k miles, ~54 reg newer car, fewer miles, but faster depreciation and reliability problems? or were these only when the model was introduced? I like the look of the Saab but my biggest concern is with depreciation... - VW Passat, ~40k miles, ~54 reg fewer miles again, VAG reliability...
  • Mitsubishi servicing requirements 13 Aug 2006 (Forum)
    All the documentation from the dealer that I have clearly states that it is covered by the 'balance of maufacturers warranty'. Many thanks for your help! I didn't realise that buying a small car could produce so much anxiety! {Subject header given a more meaningful title, rather than "Help required...." so as to give readers a clue to as your question - DD}
  • Toyota Yaris D-4D 1.4 28 Jun 2006 (Forum)
I had a look at Parkers and most sells above £6500 for 53 plate with around 30k - 40k miles. Do anyone of you think the car is overkilled considering the car is only 2 yrs old and have covered 50k miles. WHat sort of mileage can this engine achieve?? We have seen Polo 1.4 TDI achieved in excess of 100k miles. Does anyone knows who made these D-4D engien, is it a Toyota or a Citreon/Peugeot design?
  • Can an S-Class be serviced on a budget? 25 Apr 2003 (Forum)
I don\'t. I always let the car warm up in the mornings, I try to avoid long journeys and I\'ve only taken the car abive 3,000 revs twice in the month I\'ve had it so far and that\'s the way I intend to keep it. Honest. The Mercedes schedule is a lubrication service followed by a \"mechanical\" service one after the other.
  • Renault Clio 1 Petrol (1991 - 1998) - 93 1.2 Cat red hot, cyl 1 plug carboned, black 31 Jul 2010 (Forum)
burnt? in the CAT (its job). Obviously this releases a lot of heat!!!! Found distributor cover was very messed up so, replaced, plugs, leads, distributor cover, rotor arm, and air filter. AND oxygen sensor (in the exhaust manifold) the old one was rather carboned up. Spark good on all cylinders.
  • Toyota Yaris - Toyota Listers Nuneaton 16 Jun 2015 (Forum)
The windows were covered by dust so obviously the car was never ever washed valeted or supaguarded. Toyota NUneaton asked us to come back for the third time to give us the carpets and fuel up the car but the whole experience was humiliating and appalling.
  • Peugeot 307 - Twist or stick? 9 Jul 2012 (Forum)
I’m a long time lurker at this site and now the latest in a long line of people looking for a bit of advice! My wife has a 2004 Peugeot 307 1.4 HDI which we have owned from 3 months old that has now covered 54k. Knowing now of the reputation of French cars I’m not sure that we would make the same purchase today but, despite being a bit dull to drive, this car has been faultless in the 8 years that we have owned it and other than regular servicing, tyres, brakes and recently an exhaust there have been no unexpected costs.
  • 2013 VW Passat 2.0TDi - My rights on a second hand car bought from dealer 9 Jun 2018 (Forum)
Anyway, we have had the car a day and the aircon is blowing out hot air. Took it to a garage to get it regased which the dealer confirmed he would cover, but the garage said that wasn't the issue, and that it might be the compressor or something else.
  • Toyota MR2 - Won Small Claims Case - What Next? 1 May 2017 (Forum)
Hi - I purchased a car from a dealer a year ago and it had loads of faults wrong with it which i wasnt told of at the point of sale. The dealer refused to take the car back so i took him to court. I won the court case yesterday and the judge ruled for the dealer to pay me my money back within 14 days.
  • Mazda 6 2007 Diesel - DPF regen failure/air mass sensor link? 4 Nov 2016 (Forum)
For about six months the car has, I think, had two simultaneous faults. 1) A failed DPF regen about 1000 miles after a filter replacement.  The car had covered about 1000 miles since the replacement and had done about 100 miles of steady motorway driving on the day the DPF light came on.
  • 2006 Ford Focus 1.6 TDCI - Weird vibrating, flapping sound under acceleration 8 Sep 2016 (Forum)
I've changed the alternator belt thinking that it could've become loose, but this hasn't rectified the problem. The engine undershield and top cover are firmly attached, as is the wheel arch liner. There is no physical vibration from the car during the noise, and the running of the car is as it should be. I know of someone else who has the same car as me, and has had this noise going on for the last two years of owning it, but car still runs ok.
  • A Good Laugh - Courtesy of Me 5 Dec 2003 (Forum)
After hastily ringing up Ford, I was told "Oh yeah - we get a lot of them. But I don't know how to do it. " So I rang up Green Flag but my car wasn't covered for Home Start. THe fee was £72. I had to pay it as the car had been running for 1 hour now with the heaters on. 1 hour later, a guy came out and it was impressive watching him use the tools of the trade to effectively break into my car.
  • Fickle minded Sellers 22 Sep 2003 (Forum)
I have covered this in part in another posting but here goes. Me-Private buyer , not very knowledgeable about cars. Looking for a reliable runabout. Happened to see an ad for an Almera 1999 1.4 2 weeks back. Him-Private seller,1999,1.4, second owner , 50000 miles Condition of car=Average.
  • FWD transmission noise? 13 Jun 2002 (Forum)
I was wondering if anyone could help to identify a noise that appears to come from the front of the car. The noise occurs when turning at slow speed with about 3/4 lock or more applied while accelerating (eg car parks, mini roundabouts, etc. The noise is a continuous, whining/grumbling noise (ie not a clicking CV joint type noise).
  • Vauxhall Corsa 3 door - Drivers Seat won't lock back into position 9 Jul 2023 (Forum)
The seat mechanism jammed / broke and so the seat backrest would not lock back into place and the seat slid up and down the runners and will not stop in any position and the car wasn't driveable. It ended up being a broken cable. This is a quick fix which will get the car working again. It should also work with the passenger seat.   Other fixes online have suggested waggling the lever whilst pushing and pulling the seat.
  • Site Adverts and Pop-ups 26 Aug 2003 (Forum)
The greater part of the site holds a lot of useful and valuable information around motoring - whether this is things such as the Car by Car breakdown, Buying/Selling Cars and Road Tests and much more or things such as the useful website list. If you haven\'t explored the rest of the site, then I encourage you to do so. This all takes a great deal of people\'s time, in particular HJ\'s.
  • Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer - Is this MPG-based scheme unfair? Help please! 7 Feb 2016 (Forum)
He is not required to submit actual mileage amounts for business or private use, as they are not used in the calculation. This system would work if all vehicles achieved this figure without fail. However, when a car is only able to average around 53mpg, the employee ends up subsidising the business mileage themselves - to a fairly large degree if this mileage is high. Other colleagues have experienced this problem too, but the amount to which they are affected varies with the terrain they cover.
  • Suzuki Vitara - Tyres again 26 Nov 2024 (Forum)
There are certain corners on my usual commute where I now know I will get some gentle understeer even at low speeds.  This is usually where there is a nice chunky manhole cover or a very broken surface. As I've mentioned before, the car has tyres of variable (none very high) quality - the front two are matching Davanti.  The rear are one Sumitomo and one Fortune.
  • Hyundai I20 - Hyundai I20 Oil Leak 13 Oct 2022 (Forum)
EDIT -  The garage are selling it with an MOT which looks like it has just been done according to the MOT Check Gov website, the cause of the leak looks to be as below, not being a mechanic I'm not 100% sure how serious this is and how they would repair it, can someone help me out here? Oil leaking excessively from engine front timing cover (8.4.1 (a) (i))" I'm hoping it's nothing serious as the car is a decent price and ticks all the right boxes, but I'm willing to walk away if it's serious. Thanks in advance Adam
  • Toyota RAV4 - MOT - Lockdown Rust? 19 Mar 2021 (Forum)
The mechanic, a local (trusted) independant, still has the opinion that Japanese vehicles are more susceptible to rust, though also put the deterioration down to lack of use as this year, due to obvious reasons, its only covered 3K. Apart from a couple of months in the summer parked on grass at the caravan, it's stood on tarmac.  l know it's a 15 year old car, but anyone else have any experience of this or agree with the opinion of the mechanic?
