  • Citroen AX 1.0L '96 - No Charge Problem 6 Feb 2011 (Forum)
Fitted alternator (very pleased with myself!) took for drive all working fine, left running for a bit so that I could take a reading off the battery after to see if all was indeed fine. Unfortunately the car stalled whilst I was inside (had actually forgotten I'd left it running, oops, a bit blonde!)
  • Giving the battery an easier life 18 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Get ready and drive off; leave the engine running when closing the garage door. Don't set off, then bang it into second gear as soon as the car is moving. Without wringing its neck, let the engine (and therefore the alternator) spin a little as you go up the gears.
  • RIP handbrake, spare wheel and 4th cylinder 3 Sep 2024 (Forum)
I'd be more than happy to hire a BMW or MINI on my next trip away, to see if they have found the magic formula to get their three pot to run smoothly.
  • Any - How clean is your exhaust tailpipe?! 25 Oct 2023 (Forum)
My 2020 ‘clean’ Kuga 2.5 PHEV with a petrol engine and plug in hybrid capability is Euro 6 and deemed sufficiently clean to dodge any ULEZ money grabs. However, if I run my finger round the end of the exhaust, it comes out covered in soot! Clearly it doesn’t have any form of petrol GPF and it shows! I guess the idea is that the battery is charged and used for urban running to improve local air quality, but I was surprised quite how much filth was lining the exhaust pipe.
  • Honda Civic - Honda Civic 2013 daytime light stopped working 7 Nov 2022 (Forum)
One of the daytime lights on my Civic is off. It looks irritating so am hoping to find a solution. Hoping someone has run into this and knows about it. 1) As far as I can tell it's not an MOT fail having one out of two running due to age of car, does that sound right? 2) There's so much variability online.
  • 1986 Daihatsu Skywing - Alternator Operating Temperature? 21 Aug 2022 (Forum)
Didn't screech on a test drive to the coast, (maybe one or two chirps) but the alternator casing was too hot to touch.  I'll put an IR thermometer on it after the next run. Daylight run, so only indicator lights and ignition, but the cooling fan was on all the time under manual control. The battery had been bench charged before starting. Couldn't find much on this in a car context from a quick Google, but a discussion on a yachting forum seems to indicate maybe 100C as a rough rule of thumb maximum.
  • Vauxhall Mokka X - Car Is Losing Coolant - Advice Welcome 13 Mar 2022 (Forum)
Although it's not a massive amount it is a concern, the level drops about 1/2 inch approx every 1000 miles or so. Also, when the car has been on a long run there is still a very small amount of vapour coming from the exhaust pipe even though the engine is fully warmed up. I took it to the main dealer thinking it might be a gasket problem. They tested the coolant pressure which they said was ok after running the engine for an hour.
  • 1998 ford galaxy 2.8 v6 - blue smoke from exhaust after head skimmed 25 Jun 2021 (Forum)
the car has been off the road for 18 months as i have renewed the head gasket, had head skimmed, and all associated valve work (new guides, grind and lapped etc) I haven't had chance to take car for a long run as its not taxed until MOT'ed.  I only drove 2 miles to the MOT Station. Do you think the smoke will clear once the valves settle or if any build up of oil in exhaust has cleared?  Was concerned that i might have been 1 tooth out on timing chain but engine appears to run ok, ticks over smoothly at 800rpm.
  • Peugeot 5008 - Car starting problems - electrical fault 25 Dec 2020 (Forum)
But, if I leave it for a few hours, it then starts ok although the battery light stays on and then it goes off after a while. It then runs perfectly until the next time it happens. I have taken it to the Peugeot dealer and they have run the diagnostics but couldn't find anything wrong - they say they need to replicate the fault to find out the problem but as it is intermittent this is almost impossible.

  • Peugeot Partner Combi 1.6 hdi - Broken Glow Plug removal. 23 Dec 2017 (Forum)
Plus they made the point that the Gplug circuit isn't just for glow plugs and injectors will be affected as well even though the car was still running. So let them remove the head and tap the broken Gplug end out with a pin punch and reassemble plus New Timing belt ,water pump serviced etc. Car is transformed, starts fine, runs better than ever.
  • Mazda CX-3 1.5d SE Nav - DPF 20 Jul 2016 (Forum)
On a long run from Oxfordshire to Derbyshire it happened again today (June 12th) .....for the seventh time !! Thinking of rejecting the car as "not fit for purpose' VERY UNHAPPY, has anyone else had this problem with the 1.5d CX-3?
  • Wiper blades 18 May 2016 (Forum)
She was unable to find a match for me, so I took away their replacement blade kits and with a bit of jiggery-pokery they worked fine at about one third of Honda's cost to replace. So, low cost to run cars are not so cheap to run as they would have us believe. Can I put in a good word for Pat here, can talk with me for hours about cars, much more interesting than most of the blokes I know.
  • Skoda Roomster - VW Recall list 20 Oct 2015 (Forum)
From Wiki I gather they are the same engine, I understand  the blue additive was probably switched off vw models but Roomster does not have this but scr? I would like to know how VW ecu when running cheat mode can get all the NOX past the scr/ dpf, does it also switch off the EGR valve. When running in non cheat mode after recall i.e. after being 'Mullered' will the emissions require endless servicing and at whose cost I would like to see full disclosure of the technical issues reported by motoring press and not be fobbed off by VW reflashing their box leading to lower economy.
  • Mazda 6 2.0 Diesel 2006 123550 miles. - Mazda6 EM Light is on 19 Jun 2015 (Forum)
    - Could the CAT be blocked or causing the issue? - Could the EGR be blocked or clogged. Engine has always run fine and not nasty knocks or bangs at cold or hot. Cheers in advance.

  • Transit 160 1989, ex-ambulance - Replacement twin wheel axle 20 Dec 2014 (Forum)
there has been an  increasingly  nasty clunking noise from the area of the diff. ONLY when the vehicle is coasting in "over run"or coming to a stop after a long hot run. e.g the other day on approaching Dartford Crossing put gear into neutral and coasted slowly in the queue and dreadful clunk, clunk at each slow rev of the prop shaft.
  • Peugeot 406 Diesel W reg - Electrical fault - Air conditioning 1 Jul 2014 (Forum)
Air con pump and other bits all checked out OK.  Their advice was to run it anyway and ignore the message.  I am not comfortable doing this.  Any ideas as to what is causing this and how to recify it.  I also have a fault with the hand brake in warm weather which has been going on since last year.
