  • Audi Q2 - first 1,000 miles 25 May 2018 (Forum)
And there's an indescribably good feeling that never again will I have to reach for the parking brake down by my right knee.  I still prefer a manual handbrake, but this one comes on and off automatically when you stop and start, and is doing its best to convert me. It's mostly very well furnished inside, although the door cards feel hard and basic, with a fine high driving position and very supportive seats.
  • Ford Focus 2.0i ESP 2000 petrol - Car battery capacity 21 Nov 2011 (Forum)
During the week I had left the interior light on overnight on one occasion (8-10 hours)   On Saturday I repeated a) to get to the gym but accidentally left lights on (they switch to sidelights automatically with ign off). The car was left like this for approx 2.5 hours On return clicking only - no start   After jump starting, running for 5 mins, and driving home in lower gear/higher revs, I put the battery on to charge after a) in reverse, but my (smart) charger reckoned it was fully charged within 10 minutes (??)
  • Mondeo running problems 31 Mar 2007 (Forum)
I drove the car to the garage and bought a bottle of STP diesel injector cleaner which I put straight into the tank, the whole bottle to about half a tank of diesel, then drove home. The next morning the car would not start so I automatically suspected the glow plugs. My friend having an account with LCP told me to order a new set of plugs and have them delivered to his, and he would fetch them round that evening and replace them. I tried various times during the day to start the car but it would not start.

  • Vehicle Excise Duty - Motorist entrapment 14 Mar 2025 (Forum)
In common with other government agencies, the DVLA exhorted us all to go digital, paying our VED by direct debit, monthly or annually. I’ve paid mine this way for so long it has become automatic. Noticing periodic adjustments as tax rates fluctuated, I’d thought, that’s clever. Other government agencies, such as HMRC, had introduced systems such as Tell Us Once, whereby ‘joined-up government’ would update records in sync.
  • Volvo V60 - The first 10,000 miles 25 Jul 2017 (Forum)
So even if it wasn't my first choice, I've generally been happy with the V60.  It's the D4 (190 bhp turbodiesel) with torque converter automatic, in quite a fetching shade of light blue. Good things:  - It's safe and solid, and seems built to last.  - Reasonably quiet diesel engine which is loosening up nicely with pulling away from rest getting gradually livelier.
  • Buying a car, would like a few things cleared up 24 Feb 2017 (Forum)
My car has failed its MOT (04 plate Mondeo) & i'm kind of glad because i've had it for 2 years & its given me mostly nothing but grief in that time. Before this i pad a 02 automatic Peugeot 407 & a Vauxhall Agila (First car, insurance was ludicrously cheap) Both of these cars have also had there fair share of problems. That said none of them cost more than a £1000 to buy.
  • Toyota Auris Touring Sports - Auris TS hybrid test drive 13 Jun 2016 (Forum)
All Having spent hours reading and watching reviews we finally had a test drive in a auris hybrid. First time I've driven a hybrid (or automatic for that matter) and it was a little odd to start with. Some observations: Living in Devon we inevitably went up and down some hills.
  • Electric & Hybrid Cars 12 May 2012 (Forum)
The Nissan Leaf was an interesting car, purely electric and therefore a maximum range of around  80ish miles. It was a nice solid car, and drove almost exactly the same as a good automatic. I could actually see this type of car meeting a lot of people's requirements, however £26,000 for a Fiesta / Focus size car? It also amused me how Nissan felt the need to bend the numbers on their advertising in an attempt to make it seem a good buy.

  • Driving simulator experience 9 Sep 2009 (Forum)
The simulator is very sophisticated and akin to one used for pilot training. The car you ?drive? is a Jag S type automatic housed in a dome. The engine, bonnet etc have been removed, but the rest of it is intact. Speedo and rev counter work as do warning lights, indicators repeater light etc. After 20 minutes of accompanied training to get used to the controls - the steering is a little light and there isn?
  • Best van for up to £4000 please 7 Sep 2004 (Forum)
Disco TD5 is now on the very back burner as there is nothing wrong with the 200TDi (Oh dear lets not tempt fate, otherwise the works van will become an automatic Nissan Almera!!!!). So, the trafic as a van is fine, though looking tatty at 187K + miles and is hell on earth on the motorway. I don't need a high roof, though I may consider one if it were cheap.
  • New Car buying tips.... 1 Oct 2002 (Forum)
When haggling do not get rude or appear to be more knowledgeable than the salesperson. 14. Do not buy any Renault with an automatic gearbox. 15. When collecting the car inspect it thoroughly. Ensure it is to your spec. Do not allow yourself to be hurried. Ensure that the dealer has not waxed the windscreen!
  • Speed cameras examined 28 Apr 2015 (Forum)
A form of average speed camera similar to Specs and officially known as a two-lane bi-directional ANPR (automatic numberplate recognition) camera. How does it work? It uses ANPR to identify vehicles and calculate their average speed between different camera locations. It can monitor up to two lanes, and lanes flowing in opposite directions.
  • What used family car? Too much choice is a curse.. 29 Oct 2020 (Forum)
Must-have’s / preferences ·         Gearbox – Must be automatic ·         Practicality - Decent passenger and boot space to cope with demands of family-life, and clobber for family holidays. ·         Low running costs - Reasonable fuel economy, insurance, road tax and service/maintenance costs i.e. we can rule out the supercars!
  • Unpleasant MOT experience at Kwik Fit 25 Jun 2018 (Forum)
Afterwards, I was told by the front desk rep that my car had failed the emissions test . The rep automatically tried to book me in for a repair without any mention of costs. I asked about costs. The rep phoned HQ and then quoted (excluding labour and VAT?) £329 for a catalitic converter + £99 for a lambda sensor.

  • I bought an Almera 24 Feb 2006 (Forum)
I tested a few Almeras and looked at a few more, and was pleased enough that I didn't bother testing any of the more-expensive-but-less-reliable alternatives. I looked at several, but the one I bought is an ex-Motability 1.8SE automatic 5door hatch, just over a year old, mileage in the low teens, pretty much immaculate. I paid half the RRP of a new version of the same thing, and several hundred less than I would have paid in the cheapest of the supermarkets.
  • Motoring myths 13 Oct 2005 (Forum)
For example, if you have seven years no- claims and then make a claim you usually lose only two years. 11. You'll automatically fail your driving test if you stall the car Not true. The test examiner is assessing your ability to drive safely, complete certain manoeuvres and demonstrate that you understand the Highway Code.
  • How crooks are stealing cars without a key 16 Mar 2015 (Forum)
Positioned on the eastbound carriageway of this busy road, on a section between Dagenham and the Dartford Crossing, was a police car fitted with an automatic numberplate recognition (ANPR) system that alerts officers to vehicles recorded as being linked to crime. Further down the road were four marked and unmarked pursuit cars, waiting for the nod from the ANPR police car to give chase to any vehicle that the alert system flagged up.
