Mitsubishi L200 - Brake failure 10 Jan 2018 (Forum)
Just had an Interesting time in the works owned L200 pickup, Does get used on construction site tracks so quite a rough life. bought new by the company and now just over a year old with 12000 miles. coming up to a security gate down a hill at around 20 mph (site limit) tried to brake and foot goes to the floor. - pump the brakes and there was no resistance - pulled hard on the handbrake which comes straight up with a bang from the rear of the car. eventually comes to a stop just before the gate. large fluid leak at a rear wheel. - AA contacted who diagnosed a failed wheel cylinder - handbrake cable still attached to drum. -
SEAT Ibiza ST - Service actions - advice/opinions 21 Jul 2017 (Forum)
I was hoping to get some advise on reading between the lines on what to action and what can wait: 1. Front brake pads 85-90% worn, discs lipped. 2. Rear brake pads 80-85% worn 3. Wishbone brushes cracking - was advised not to be worried about this as its not causing any issues. 4. Brake fluid needs replacing - advised to get this done when get brakes done. -

Ford Focus 1.6 2007 - Rear brake drum binding 21 Sep 2016 (Forum)
Coincidentally (or maybe not) I'd booked the car into a local garage next week to have the handbrake cable adjusted because it only holds the car satisfactorily on a steep hill on the final notch, but this evening after a journey of about 3 miles I got out of the car and noticed the tell tale smell of burning brake linings. One drum was cool but the other was red hot, and so was the alloy. I took the relevant drum off and gave everything a good blast with brake cleaner, but as soon as I put it all back together, applied the handbrake and then released it, it was obvious that the solution was nothing so simple because the brakes stubbornly refused to release. -
Peugeot 106 1.4 XR - 1997 - Front RHS brake binding - help required! 4 Jan 2015 (Forum)
I recently changed the driveshafts on my R-reg 106, and found upon driving the car for the first time that the front right brake was binding heavily, with the inner (acting) pad pressed against the disc. The old driveshafts were knackered and had lost their 'spring', so I think the new ones are acting on the hub a bit more. The car hasn't been used much recently, although before the driveshafts were changed there was no sign of a problem from the brakes. -
Hyundai i30 Diesel Auto - MOT & Service querry 23 Apr 2014 (Forum)
Today 22/4/14 my son who is driving the car ,is about 120 miles away from home and her heard a scraping noise from the rear of the car, he has taken it to a garage and they have said that the rear brakes are down to the metal and they are being replaced. I have contacted the MOT garage, they say they have to do a visual check on the rear brakes and have to estimate the wear, and they cannot see both sides of the brake pads. -
Ford Fiesta - Wheel balancing caused grinding brake issue 2 Apr 2013 (Forum)
The bad news is they've managed to introduce a rather dull grinding noise, coming from what appears to be the front driver side brake area. The noise appears most prominent when coasting at low speeds, rising in sound levels when applying the brakes. I've also noticed a couple of times that my steering spins wildly to the right when slowing down (but this has only happened literally the twice so far, and is far from the norm). -
VW Passat B5.5 - Brakes lack bite after being blead 14 May 2012 (Forum)
Just blead the brakes on my (2003) B5.5 estate and now they lack bite and have more pedal travel. The first push of the pedal is spongy, and on the second it does bite. Before the blead, the brakes were sharp, requiring less push of the pedal before they bit. -
Peugeot 206 - 2001 206 2.0 HDi lights gone crazy & engine cuttin 8 Dec 2010 (Forum)
It also causes the milometer to go every when the indicators flash on Also when the engine is running it cuts out when the brake pedal is pressed. It doesn't cut out if the car is moving & in gear. but for instance when you pull up to a junction & press the clutch & brake pedal it cuts out & also cuts when car is idling & the brake is pressed. -
Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - Brake Cylinder Replacement Cost 25 Nov 2009 (Forum)
Hey all, hope you can help me with my little problem. My Focus failed its MOT due to the rear, passenger-side brake wasnt up to scratch. I took it in to the garage that carried out the MOT this morning to look into this issue. I got a call at 3pm to say that the drum was badly corroded and they had to cut the bearings off to have a look at the shoe and it would cost £330 to replace the leaky brake cylinder's and brake shoe's so that it would pass the MOT. -

Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 03 2.0 brake problem 17 May 2009 (Forum)
There is nothing to say its the brakes. One mechanic said could be something to do with suspension or steering but cant see how? It gets worse though when the brakes get used more. It gets that bad sometimes it makes the whole car vibrate. -
Ford Escort (1993 - 2000) - 1997 1.8 Rear brake shoes won't stay in line 21 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Hi all, I'm writing this from work as I stayed behind at 6pm to quickly replace the rear brake shoes on my Escort (1997/R 1.8 16v Ghia X 5 door hatch, no ABS). I'm quite mechanically adept but haven't worked on drum brakes in about 15 years. I am using a Haynes manual for guidance. I have changed the offside shoes but when I refit the drum to the hub, the drum will only rotate freely through 180' before stopping with a clonk. -
Volkswagen Polo IV (2005 - 2009) - 05 1.4 brakes locking up 17 Nov 2008 (Forum)
My mum has an 05 Polo (1.4 Tdi) which just a few weeks out of warranty exhibited a fault whereby the offside rear wheel locks up whilst in motion. Aside from the fact that the garage replaced her front brakes ("I have a problem with my brakes") and almost replaced the rear brakes at considerable expense (the car has done less than 40K miles), they now think that it is an ABS fault. The fault is intermittent but my mum is now very worried about driving the car - the fault so far has only happened at low speed but if it happened at motorway speeds the result would be an immediate loss of control so it is extremely dangerous. -
nissan primera - brakes 26 May 2005 (Forum)
Could the back room please help me with the following query : Took my car for a service at Nissan main dealer today, and one of the items I asked them to check was the fact that there is sometimes a 'popping' sound when I apply the brakes. They phoned me and said the brakes needed 'shimming' and were beginning to 'break up'. While this sounded serious to me, they said it does not really matter and is not a safety issue. They recommended waiting for the next service before doing the 'shimming', at which time new pads would also be needed. -
Ford Mondeo Braking 16 Aug 2002 (Forum)
I also not that the engine is not exactly centrally mounted along the centre axis of the car, by design. Could this cause the effect mentioned? I don't think this is connected with brakes, which seem fine. However, when braking hard from speed, the car does want to steer to the right, which has to be corrected. I have just fitted two new front tyres and had the tracking done (front wheels only), but this problem (?) -
Volkswagen Polo - '57 plate VW Polo brakes issue - faulty ABS? 12 Feb 2019 (Forum)
Hi, Newbie here - hoping someone can help with this ongoing saga... The brake pedal on my 57 plate VW Polo started feeling mushy and braking was less responsive. Took it into a local garage to have the brakes checked, and they advised that there was nothing wrong - probably just needed a brake fluid change and bleeding. -
