  I am thinking about a buying a current shape Avensis - Haven't driven one yet, but like the look and quality feel of the car, and have heard good reports. I'm hovering between 2.0 D-4D diesel (manual only), or a petrol automatic, as I've mostly had automatic cars over the years, but am also noticing hte increasing petrol prices, hence thinking of diesel as an alternative. I do also have an old Celica Cabrio which is 180Bhp and automatic (this is a high-days and holidays fairweather car).

  Hi all, I've had my Mokka X for over a year now and it's the first automatic I've ever had so I can't compare it with any others cars I've had. My main query is about about the smoothness of the lever when changing gear. When I start the car and pull the gear lever backwords from Park to Drive it feels fairly smooth, but when I shift from Drive back to Park it feels very stiff and more difficult to move.

  Hyundai eventually got someone to open up a car, again from inside, it was raining, then left us, waited, ignored, receptionist busy chatting, gave up. Skoda, wanted a manual, only had automatic, aggressively asked why I didn't want an automatic, everyone has an automatic. Will you be getting a manual? don't know... Can you access central stock?   I have a Fiat Stilo Abarth with driving wheel on the left (I live in Valencia, Spain).  The car is great but for the automatic gearbox which my local official Fiat garage does not know how to fix. The car stops dead when I reduce speed from 5th gear,  when I go over a bump, or tram-lines.  I can usually get it going again, burt now it has stopped altogether.

• 2003 Golf TDI (Automatic) - Accelerator Issue - Not able to Rev in Gear 6 Jan 2011 (Forum)
  Ocacasionally when I start the car the accelerator while depressed does not increase the engine revs, it sits at idle ticking over. I'm able to select all gears and as it is an automatic I am able to move the car at the base level of revs, however I can't drive due to problem. Within  a few mins of moving back and forth it seems to correct itself and everything is fine. I am however obviously concerned that at some point it will not correct and would like to address.

Regardless of whether you have a full BMW service history, the dealer will never change the auto fluid. Many of these boxes are failing around the 120-150k mark - often well outside of warranty and to a cost of £3.5k plus VAT.
