Volkswagen Beetle (1998 - ) - do I need to disconnect battery whilst charging ? 30 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Can't say I've ever disconnected the battery from the car before? Presumably this would result in the ECU resetting itself, needing to dig out the code for the radio etc. Is it really necessary to disconnect the battery from the car, or is this just the manufacturer trying to cover their backs? It's only a 4 amp charger and would be left on overnight. -
Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 02 1.8 speedo stops working & engine cuts out 29 Jan 2009 (Forum)
I have an on-going problem with my 2002 1.8 zetec estate. Briefly, the speedo fails, lights dim, radio goes quiet, wipers slow down, sometimes engine stops when changing down gears but will re-start if I let the clutch out quickly. If it doesn't re-start, I lose power steering & coast to a halt, which is scary/dangerous if I'm going round a corner or island - it's rolled up to the kerb more than once. -

Ford Fiesta (1989 - 1995) - 1994 1.8d Droning noise 18 Jan 2009 (Forum)
I have had the car 2 days and noticed today first time i took it for a run, that there is a droning noise that gets louder as i go faster, cant work out if its from front or rear. The best way i can describe it is it sounds like a noisy diff which i had happen yrs ago on an old mk2 escort i think it was which was cured by putting oil in.It seems to start at around 20mph and as i said gets louder with more speed at 70 i cant even hear the radio lol. Any ideas/pointers welcome, bit scared and skint to take into a garage at the moment. regards Ian. -
Peugeot 307 SW (2002 - 2008) - 2002 2.0 Air Con Unit controls - lighting up? 16 Dec 2008 (Forum)
However when I go to the car of a morning, start it up and put the lights on every thing works, the LCD displays, radio buttons etc light up - but none of the controls or buttons on the Automatic Air Conditioning unit light up. I am having to feel the contols as I am driving if I want to boost the heater or switch on the rear demister etc. -
Rover 25 (1999 - 2005) - 04 1.6 Starting prob - lights on but delayed start 20 Jun 2008 (Forum)
When the ignition key is turned to the final position nothing happens, all the dash lights are on, radio, fan etc but nothing happens. With repeated turning to the final position at some point it will fire up. Also, if the key is just held in the final position and wait it will at some point fire up. -
Pug 307 2.0l auto 2001 instrument panel 31 Dec 2006 (Forum)
Driving up the M1 in the above car the instruments / cd player started to act up in a rather random way: Speedo dipped then worked ok Rev counter dipped then worked ok CD stopped then started where it left off / at the beginning of the CD or swapped to radio or maybe showed the volume control. Odd warning lights flicked on then off (low fuel/airbag/abs). The odometer 'moved on' several miles and sometimes this whole readout looked as if I had just switched the ignition on - ie ran thru miles to service & oil level before coming up with the odometer and mileometer readings. but ........ the main mileometer always reads ok & the engine / gearbox never seemed to give any trouble. -
06 Picasso, software issue or feature? 3 Jul 2006 (Forum)
After having a 1000 mile first service I discovered that the remote locking would not function until approx 8s after turning the ignition off and removing the key. ( The battery symbol remained alight during this time). Some Ign (inc radio and elect windows)operated accessories continue to operate during this time. After a 150mile trip today the car has now reverted to its original behaviour! ie Turn Ign key off and remove and all Ign operated devices are immediately turned off, (and CL works straight away)! -
Phantom traffic reports 30 Jan 2006 (Forum)
As I was driving to work the other morning, the RDS picks up a traffic report about lorry crash in the contraflow between J17/J18 of M4. A couple of minutes later, a second RDS report from a different radio station again goes on about a lorry stuck in contraflow in the same place. So I brace myself for a very slow journey to work as I was about about to hit the start of the contraflow and (allegedly) some rather long queues........ -
What would it take to get you out of car 4 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Traffic is too heavy getting into London, driving a car there is insane if you work fairly normal hours. 2. It's £80 a month to park at the railway station which is quite a lot to pay to have my radio nicked and find a new scratch on it every so often. Cycle parking is free and I don't care if my £20 bike gets damaged. Do you now use an alternative to the car, or are you close to changing? What would push you over the edge? -
Megane 1996 electrical problem 26 May 2005 (Forum)
This morning, no problems, car behaved normally. Interestingly, when he used the car the other day, the radio asked for the code - which it should only do if the power had been interruped, so it had obviously suffered a power outage unnoticed. Now, I would initially suspect a bad earth or break in the main power lead, but the symptoms seem to suggest something slightly more obscure. -
Affordable public transport 2 May 2005 (Forum)
Listening to the J Vine Show yesterday on Radio 2, there was an item about a Passenger Waiting Environment (or a Bus Shelter, if you are not one of the enlightened) that had been built by Manchester counlcil at a cost of £250,000. A council worthy was on the show explaining that the reason those waiting in the Passenger Waiting Environment had to walk 50 metres to the bus stop when the bus arrived was because they might get confused if they saw buses with the same number waiting at the stop on the other side of the road. -
Insurance Dispute 18 Aug 2004 (Forum)
The car is a Toyota Starlet 1.31 SR ( T Plate 99 ) which is the sport rally version of the Starlet and with the P at then end of the Chassis number denotes that the car was prepared at the point of entry and 15” Speedline Alloys fitted prior to delivery. The claim is for damage and resulting theft of the radio system. He has several specs from old sites and chat rooms but the insurance company is refusing to accept that is the vehicle they originally insured. They say they have rung a Toyota Agents who declares the vehicle was delivered with steel 14” wheels. -
2nd Cheap car for commuting 26 May 2004 (Forum)
It will only need to carry the driver (me) along motorways, dual carriageways. So size isn't a problem. As for gadgets, I'd like A/C, PAS, ABS and a radio. Any suggestions on the car? I've thought of Fiat Punto's, Skoda's, Seat's, Daewoo's etc. Any suggestions on how I should buy it? Little car sales plot? Private, auction or main dealer and see if they have any cars that have been traded in? -
Why is the Ford Focus so good 31 Mar 2004 (Forum)
- Engine was utterly characterless; economy disappointing even when driven gently - Steering lacked feel, was uncommunicative - No rear discs - Radio reception was poor; the cassette player sounded AWFUL - Seat made my back ache - Doors clanged shut - No synchromesh on reverse - No gas strut to hold bonnet open - So so interior - cool dash, though. -
205 starter motor 26 Feb 2004 (Forum)
The starter did not turn, but an audible rapid clicking sound could be heard - maybe 3 clicks per second -- not sure if it was from the engine bay or a relay in the glove box. At the same time the radio went dead and the digital clock went back to 1 o clock. The clicking and non operative starter happened twice, then I let the hand brake off and rolled forward a couple of feet (dont know why I thought that might help! -
Delay charging? 3 Oct 2003 (Forum)
I've noticed from listening to traffic reports over the last few weeks on Radio 2 there seem to be a lot of hold-ups caused by lorries losing their loads or similar. On the railway, the company who causes a delay is fined and compensation is paid to other companies affected. -
Shogun Power Steering 12 Mar 2003 (Forum)
I started steering and straight away noticed the steering was heavy, it was obvious I had lost the power steering, got it off the roundabout, turned the radio off and it became apperent the engine was not running! This explains the loss of inicators and the loss of PST, the gear lever was still in Drive (auto). I have played about with the car on my drive, cant find a problem now.... any ideas?? -
306 cutting out 27 Jan 2003 (Forum)
Hi, I got my Peugeot 306 lx 1.4 in Feb 2002, it has been back to the garage at least 10 times since for the same problem. When i am driving the car it will cut out with no warning, all of the power goes, the radio turns off and i am then stranded until the car rolls to a stop. The car will then turn over and start up with no problems. It seems worse when i am running the air con, a little extra load on the engine seems to cause this fault. -
Remotes on used cars 31 Dec 2002 (Forum)
Good advice for everyone buying secondhand - make sure all the key number info comes with the car (and radio code) and check that both remotes work. Make sure you know wether the car you are looking at should have more than one remote. Make sure you try both remotes. If one does not work, do not accept "oh, must just need new batteries" - swop the batteries from the good remote and try again.
