Do you have to be thick to buy brand new? 8 Sep 2009 (Forum)
I always buy six months+ old - my merc - was9 months old - 9k on the clock - saved almost 9k Btw, I'm talking about Brit reg cars with 3 or more years guarantee. ========= PS: Brand new models from mass car producers will obviously hold their value better for the first 6/12 months -
Retirement car for FiL 20 Apr 2007 (Forum)
My retired father-in-law is thinking about getting another car which will last him a good few years. New or up to two years old, three or five door, manual box, reliable, cheap to run, and corrosion-resistant (he lives by the sea). Image is of no concern nor is performance as long as it is comfortable. -
Settle to Falmouth..road or plane? 22 Mar 2007 (Forum)
The easiest option is to fly to either Newquay or Plymouth, but the flight costs for 3 people is pretty expensive, plus airport parking and car hire at the other end. I have been offered use of a car...my 10 year old VW Transporter and 12 year old Defender are not conducive to a long distance relaxed journey. Any suggestions as to the best route and approximate travelling time( by car)..my cargo is two elderly relatives! -
Etiquette for test driving 2nd hand cars 15 Dec 2006 (Forum)
The guy wouldn't let me test drive it as my insurance is 3rd party cover only - he said if I made a deposite he'd add me to his cover for a day. I can see where he's coming from as it's a fast car, but is this normal? And as I'm about to sell my 4 year old Golf GTI is this the norm when people come to see it? I remember when we went to buy my mate's car (a 10 year old VR6) the bloke was pretty free and easy about letting us drive it although obviously it was only worht 10% of the BMW's value. -
used car safety ratings 2 Jul 2005 (Forum)
In the small cars the pre 98 Astras got a much better rating than the post 98 ones. The Focus is not listed because it wasn't imported into Australia during the period of the study but the old style 95 to 01 Mondeo gets a good rating. -

Cambelt woes. Renault Espace 3.0 24v 24 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Hi 1st post, so be gentle... Mt timing belt\'s gone - car\'s 5yrs & 2 months old, 58k miles. Manufacturer says it should be changed at 5 years or 72k miles - whichever comes first. Car has full dealer service history, at franchised dealers. The warranty company won\'t cover the cost, because it\'s over 5 years old. -

Renault Clio - Maintenance on a 6 year old car 21 Jun 2023 (Forum)
My car is now 6,6 years old, Bought it from Renault retail group as a Pre Reg , So only paid £11,500 for it , Its a 1.5 Diesel with 41000 Miles on the clock This has to be one of the cheapest cars that i have ever owned and i am planning on keeping it for another 6 years and more if possible Since new, Its had new brake discs and pad and a new ball joint plus a set of tyre's and it gets a service every year Looking at the future, Would it be recommended to have a garage to replace all parts that maybe starting to come to the end of there life like the exhaust, Suspension parts, Timing belt and other parts that may need replaced at some time or is it better to just wait until i get issues. -
Car recommendation pls 14 Jul 2021 (Forum)
Hi there We are a family of 5 looking for a car recommendation.. we’re upgrading from a 2009 Yaris. We have two kids in child seats (ages 4 and 1) and a 12 year old who sits between them. In the Yaris, that’s a tight fit! We also want enough space to take camping gear - as at the moment we have to do every trip in two journeys..! -

Is buying new really so bad anymore?? 11 Jul 2007 (Forum)
So if I assume (possible egg on face time) that a year ago they were the same price then that would mean a buyer would only have lost £1563 on a years new motoring plus not taking a gamble that a year old car has an unknown history... So I can understand people saying "don't touch new cars, they depreciate too much, get one a year or two old" if they thought you could lose £4k+ on a £14k car... but the above suggests it would be nothing like that amount.. -
Family Estate or MPV 21 Aug 2003 (Forum)
My current favourite is a 3 or 4 year old Omega estate - any opinions on this? And is a 3 year old car with 90,000 miles a better bet than a 5 year old car with 40,000 miles? Any help very gratefully received. Rick -
Which nearly new supermini? 30 Sep 2002 (Forum)
I have thought about lots of cars but so far I've only test-drive two. Lots of people here seem to like the Yaris so I've had a look at a 1.3 SR petrol. I have also had a look at a previous model Fiesta with the old 1.3 engine in it. -

Hi, I'm considering selling my car to the likes of Motorway etc. What should I do about my private plate? If I go on DVLA and put it on retention, I can put my old plates back on the old car immediately, but I'll have no V5 for a few weeks. -
