But that's another story. Luckily there was little danger of being blitzed by the Citizen Surveillance Cameras, anyway I always drive on a foreign license in UK. After 900 miles around UK in this lump it was a great relief to get back to Manila, board the Better Half (by now the Bitter Half)'s Ford Lynx 1.6, zip away from the car park with a tropical spec aircon blasting ice-cold air, room to move one's corpus, plenty of space for the luggage, and to be thankful for being reminded of the American interpretation of what automobile travel should be about.

  • Insurance claim hassle 27 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Whilst crossing back over the road from the newsagent i noticed that type of minibus parked much further up the road...so took a look and bingo, same vehicle, with a big blue paint mark down it's rear nearside wing....so took some pictures with a digital camera of our damage with white paint and white paint dust, their damage with recent dirt smudges and blue paint....then contacted the relevant council depot, who rang the driver. He returned to the vehicle, we exchanged names and addresses and he apologised, admitting liability stating he'd had to pull in tight to our car suddenly, due to another driver and hadn't realised he'd hit it when turning right, but with the paint on his wagon and recent damage/paint on ours, it was obvious he'd caused it so far so good.....but then comes the insurance calim fiasco a well known budget insurer....
  • Aggressive wheel clamper 2 Dec 2011 (Ask HJ)
I'm sorry, this is a bit long, but I'm pretty wound up about this. I drive a commercial van for my own business, which is film and video making. 4 days...
  • Citroen DS5 - My Road Test Report 13 Mar 2015 (Forum)
All very clunky – so much so, that I ended up plugging in my Tomtom and using that instead. One very good feature was the reversing camera, augmenting the rear parking sensors – a good thing as visibility through the tiny rear window is terrible, and the screen looks about 50 yards away in the rear view mirror. So how does it drive?
  • Can I get a refund from the dealership who mis-sold me a damaged Renault Captur? 10 Feb 2017 (Ask HJ)
I bought a year old Renault Captur at the weekend and it appears to be a nice, well-kept car. However, driving it home I noticed what looked like specks...
  • 2 weeks in the US - observations motoring & other 13 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Saw one speed gun in use (on I4 used by a Florida Highway Patrol on a bike) - he was well camouflaged as well. 6. Did not see one speed camera but then again most people seemed to be observing the speed limits anyway - including us Brits ! 7. When driving long distances (60 plus miles) we did a few counts of vehicles to ascertain the most popular and types. 70% + of vehicles were minivans (people carriers) or SUVs (4 x 4's) or pick up trucks, the rest were normal type saloons.

But perhaps the biggest shock is that there are not only cars of all shapes and sizes (and, yes, that does include six-door black limousines driven by suspicious-looking men in very sharp suits and dark glasses), and full sized coaches, thank goodness passing slowly through to allow their passengers to point their cameras and video cams through the windows, but also – terrifying to behold – local buses the size of large coaches, with a sharp turn of speed, whose drivers have a heavy right foot. True, there are traffic marshals with walkie-talkies on the extended narrow stretches, but they operate only at peak times and their real function is to prevent two large vehicles meeting at points where they would stand no chance of passing.
  • Chevy Impala - Make a full size car get 200 mpg 10 Dec 2014 (Forum)
Ford on 2 gallons of gas. Other mechanics and engineers checked for hidden tanks, none were found. Reporters and a camera crew went with him 100 miles out and back; 200 miles 2 gallons. He claimed from the beginning that he did not know exactly how the system worked, just that it did and he proved it time and again. He had hoped other engineers would help to explain what he was doing.
  • Hijacking - worth reading. 23 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Don't do stupid things like leaving your cellphone, briefcase or shopping parcels on your passenger seat. If you fill up at a petrol station check to see whether the place has surveillance cameras and try to park within their range. Don't take pamphlets from complete strangers at stop streets and robots. Never drive with your windows down or your doors unlocked. Don't pick up hitchhikers.
  • Buying a new car 22 Dec 2013 (Forum)
Toyota Yaris – The dealers were good but the Yaris was not at all interesting to drive, very sensible and nothing wrong with it but again not what I was looking for. The engine choice is very conservative and the rear parking camera a waste of time in my opinion, better off using the mirrors and looking over your shoulder. Seat Ibiza – I didn’t test drive the Ibiza but had to hire a car for a week and it happened to be the Seat.
  • The complete driver. Why worry? 27 Apr 2003 (Forum)
A couple of bicycles strung on the back of the old jalopy will soothe the tree-huggers and possibly cover one?s number plate from the speed cameras. If the bicycles are ever stolen or removed, do retain the carrying-frame. This has tine-like fingers protruding from the rear of the car at just around face height for motorcyclists and cyclists.
  • Anatomy of a ride 23 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Ride briefing is carried out by the stage leader (me for once) about where we stop, who has the Fix-A-Flat aerosol, the disposable Kodak camera and First Aid kit just in case, does everyone have copies of their reg docs and licence etc etc. Police have been known to take your ride if you can't prove ownership and we all know what happens to it after that.......ends up either in the chop shop or the local mayor is riding it with no reg plates.
