  • 2500km in a Citroen Xantia 17 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Strangely it seems to get the back of the car much colder than it does the front. I loved the automatic windscreen wipers. Changing speed, interval and even on and off, depending on the wetness of the windscreen ? how does it do that ? I found it slightly irritating that even if one has left it on automatic, if you switch off and on the engine, you have to take them off automatic and put them back on for it to work.
  • bought a car. Ripped off. 22 Mar 2010 (Forum)
The car is a Vauxhall Vectra, 2003 ‘53’ plate 2.2 automatic. after only one month and 1000 miles at the beginning of March the automatic gearbox failed resulting in a repair costing £2000 minimum. The car had been purchased for £2300, so this failure has effectively written the car off leaving us obviously in a horrible position, without our money, without transport, and with a useless car outside which we can no way afford to repair.

  • 40 year old first time driver! 28 Nov 2024 (Forum)
Just a short 23 years after my first lesson, I passed my driving test last week :-)  And now I'm completely overwhelmed at choosing a car to suit me and my family, with me and my husband knowing next to nothing about cars. Main points I think are:   Automatic Will mainly be used local, but for longer distances/motorways possibly every few weeks for leisure trips.   We have a 3 year old, hoping to have another baby within the next year (but obviously no guarantees on that one!).
  • Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate - Brain Pick 10 Jan 2022 (Forum)
I have a Merc E Class estate, 2016 model (last of the "old" ones) It has the four cylinder 2.1 diesel engine and an automatic gear box. Had it from new, but its already up to 160,000, mercifully trouble free miles. I used to do a ridiculously high annual mileage, but I'm now "down" to about 20,000 a year.  It gets used as a works van, family transport, and as a platform for our mountain biking addiction.
  • I need help choosing my next car... 6 Jul 2021 (Forum)
This is because my family has grown up and so I don't need a large vehicle anymore and if I'm buying something just for me, I quite like I find it difficult to hone my choices. My basic requirements are: 4-wheel drive Automatic Sunroof Cruise control Lots of toys - I am a gadget fiend £500 per month Max, with £10,000 down upfront (if PCP) Must be comfortable Must be able to accommodate somebody my size I'm 6’ 4”  When I go into a car selection wizard on eg Carwow I end up with about 400 different choices which doesn't help!
  • Find My Daughter an Auto - part 2 12 Jan 2020 (Forum)
Hi Folks Regular viewers of my posts will know I've asked about automatics previously and I'm now looking for a bit more information. Previously (July) I've asked about a car for my daughter and for various medical reasons at the time we had to drop plans but are now in a position to look again.
  • Which new car to buy? 2 Apr 2019 (Forum)
I currently drive a 2011 C-max. I would like to change it for an automatic and something a bit smaller. Would prefer new but would also consider nearly new. Budget ideally £15-£17k but might stretch to £19k depending on what I get for my car. Must have - reasonably high seating position, 5 doors, good all-round visibility Would like - fun to drive, heated front windscreen.
  • Random choice ? - Replacement (proper) 4*4 1 Nov 2017 (Forum)
Usually only a small trailer, but occasionally a full-size Ifor Wms double axle trailer, with a decent amount of load (so about 1.5 tonnes total towing capacity) Manual gearbox. It's mainly her car, and she hates automatics with a passion. Price to roughly £10k. Now, we've got a couple of ideas, but wanted to see if someone comes up with something that I haven't thought of. Our main thought is probably the boring choice.
  • 2010 Ford S-Max 2.0 Powershift - Ford admits fault after warranty expires ! 19 Aug 2017 (Forum)
I bought this vehicle from Ford direct in April 2011, Ford dealership gave the vehicle its first service before I took delivery, it has since been serviced by independent garages, the vehicle has been great til May this year when the automatic gearbox intermittently started to slip on pulling away from junctions and sometimes at high speeds as it changed up. I took the vehicle back to Ford dealership and said to them that this fault is intermittent but they said they would take a look.

  • Vauxhall Astra 2006 1.8 - Car will not start! argh! 22 Apr 2016 (Forum)
one thing I have noticed is that when my lights are off, the dash lights are quite bright, if I put on my side lights/beams then do dim a bit, but I do not feel its significant dimming. Also, it is an automatic, can this be towed a mile or 2 safely? I know jack about cars but I have a good understanding of what to look for, unless it is something not easily found! Any help would be so very appreciated!
  • Volvo XC60(2015) - Another service scam? 9 Mar 2016 (Forum)
It gave me a chance to check the termsw and conditions of my service plan and also what was written in the, Maintenance and Service section of the Owners Manual (page 360) The second paragraph clearly states - 'change the brake fluid every other year or at every other regular service.' In my opinion this work should have been automatically carried out at this service and again in the future fourth service, without the need for any fluid tests. I contacted the garage again and sent them a copy of the relevant page from the owners manual.Having consulted with the main dealership manager, I was contacted back and told that they would carry out the work 'free of charge.'
  • Nissan Note - Help needed - intermittent vehicle fault 26 Nov 2015 (Forum)
Hi all, I'm hoping for some help in figuring out what is wrong with my wifes Nissan Note. It's a 1.6 petrol automatic on a 64 plate that we purchased around 3 months ago at one year old, it has just under 10k on the clock. All was fine with the car and on Sunday evening I popped to the local supermarket filling station and filled the tank for her - she had ran it down so that the fuel light was flashing.
  • Mercedes Benz E280 CDI Avantgarde W211 - Problems After 'Engine Diagnostic Light' came on.. 16 Jul 2015 (Forum)
The technicians came up with loads of 'faults' including crank and ex back pressure sensors, turbo seals and boost seals leaking, plus gearbox sump gasket leaking. Whilst doing the above, they also changed the V Belt, and the automatic transmission fluid. I ended up paying £1300 for the privilege !!! Three weeks later, on the way back from Portsmouth, the car suffered power loss, and would take ages to accelerate upto 60 mph or more...
  • Citroen C1 - Misdescribed car sale 13 Mar 2015 (Forum)
I need the car for work purposes and the issue is that if I start using it, it will start losing value due to me adding extra miles onto it and any claim will automatically lose value and my chances of winning deteiorate if I'm using it. Thanks in advance.

  • Mazda 6 - Fuel pump causing problems 12 Dec 2010 (Forum)
Well I have a Mazda 6, 2.0 litre turbo diesel and I accidently and very stupidly put in £5 of petrol as soon as i realised I thought it wouldn't cause much of a problem if I just filled up with diesel (which later proved to be a huge mistake). After running on it for about 2 weeks, the car would start just automatically switching off on the road. Now after taking it to over 4 garages including Mazda I'm stuck! I've been told many different things which have not worked. So, firstly I took it to PF Jones who I've been told is a great diesel specialist, now seeing as the car just will not start it's very hard to actually diagnose the problem (or so I've been told).
  • W124 Mercedes 1500km review 16 Mar 2010 (Forum)
For a 22 year old straight six with mechanical injection, that's astonishing. Everything works - including the leak-free sunshine roof and the memory seats, the automatic gearbox oil looks like it was changed yesterday, and in 1,500km the engine hasn't consumed a single drop of oil - which is always a comforting indicator on something of that vintage. • Is owner informed if car is made Cat C ? 1 Jan 2009 (Forum)
It stated that because it was listed as 'Cat C' we would need to carry out a VIC check. (Vehicle Identity Check). I also now understand that if a car is 'Cat C', you don't automatically get a tax reminder. This made me think that the original third party insurers had made by wife's Citroen ZX a 'Cat C' write off. Surely, if an insurer declares a vehicle a 'Cat C' write off, they have a responsibility to write to the owner / registered keeper to tell them?
