new (to me) Volvo 5 Apr 2007 (Forum)
SWBO loves the heated seats (good for her back, apperently). To the point. It's done 148k, cambelt changed at 112k (according to the sticker on the cover). The Manual suggests 50k between changes, but should I be more conservative? The other drive belts look a little frayed, although I probably wouldn't have worried except that some spares were in the car when I bought it! -
lights for driving abroad 8 Oct 2006 (Forum)
I have a 03 Plate Ford Mondeo.. and have found that the stick on light deflectors are not applicable to the mondeo as its a clear plastic headlight covering. The Ford handbook states that the headlights are to be adjusted for driving on the right. However as I am taking car to France only for 4 days I do find this a little inconvenient as lights would have to be adjusted prior to the trip. -
golf mk2 1600.. cylinder head 13 Dec 2005 (Forum)
i carried out a cylinder leakage test: cylinder 1.. 8% cylinder 2 ..8-9% cylinder 3.. 30% cylinder 4.. 35% this is at cold. i accept one and 2 as the car has covered 173 000 miles and you are going to lose some compression through wear ect. cylinders 3&4 are excessive, and with air bein supplied ( through the spark plug hole, with valves closed )i can hear a hissing through the filler cap and dipstick, its also present down the exhuast from number 4. there is no bubbles in the coolent. so this leads me to believe its valve seal failure, as piston ring failure would result in alota blue smoke.. -
Used VW warranty - failed clutch 31 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Before you all jump in, yes I will be getting a Honda Civic or TGoyota as my next car! But in the mean time, the clutch has gone on my Golf, as has the center bracket for the exhaust, 6 months after I bought it from VW on their approved used scheme. They have offered to replace the clutch (apparantly it was 'weak' as opposed to 'worn') but still want me to pay £118 towards a new cover or something. -

Rumble Strips on a Hill 5 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Even coming down the hill at a very moderate speed these produce a distinct jolt to occupants of a car (motorcyclists must find it even worse). My question is, how are these strips going to react to ice? Without any technical knowledge at all, it seems to me that they will each become mini ski-jumps, making it far more likely that a driver/rider will skid off the carriageway. -
Head gasket failure Peugeot 106 10 Sep 2004 (Forum)
So my thinking is remove cam belt, lock camshaft in place with a bolt through the pulley into the head, unbolt exhaust manifold, unbolt inlet manifold, take of head cover, undo head bolts, lift off head. Replace head gasket. Then follow the old Haynes advice, "reassembly is the reverse of removal"? Obviously replacing all gaskets on the way. Just wondering if i'm way off the mark here, any help would be gratefully appreciated! -
Servicing CD's -- are they useful? 18 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Previous postings have told of car maintenance CD's offered via eBay and one poster, at least, was satisfied with what was obtained. My experience was not so good. The 'factory Service/Repair manual' turned out to be pretty useless. -
Peugeot 206 CC 8 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Last week we covered 450 kilometres in a Hertz baby Peugeot Cabriole in southern Spain. As others may be heading for such parts in the near future, I thought I?d share my experiences. (Cost was Euro 190 for Tuesday 10.00 to Friday 10.00 including zero excess insurance.) -
Almera 1.8SE Fuel Gauge, 00MY 4 May 2004 (Forum)
If so any ideas how much? Or could it be a bad connection? It's still only done 23K mile BTW, and my warrantee won't cover it , at least I think so but I have not checked. Thoughts and suggestions welcome, Thanks. -
HJ's bias against 'imports'? 4 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Sorry for the rant and advance apologies if this has been covered before. My excuse however for the latter is this forum's terrible search facility! -
MkII golf - replace wing or rebuild? 10 Nov 2003 (Forum)
I have a MkII golf driver - 1991. It recently lost the wheel arch cover on the front passenger side revealing a fair amount of corrosion. This extends right down to the plastic valance fixing which has been rotted out. Ok, its not a structural problem but i want to get it sorted. -
escort 1.8td head gasket 3 Nov 2003 (Forum)
i suspect my head gasket has started to go on my 1994 escort 1.8td. the water in the header tank has always been costant at the max but has taken a dive to min. also the car seems very laggy when you put your foot down where recently it was all there. could this be the problem or am i looking in the wrong place? (engine temperature has always been easily in the normal range, never venturing hotter than half way up the scale). -
Oil filters 10 Apr 2003 (Forum)
My old Polo started making some intermittent tapping noises from the rocker cover after I did an oil change and used (for the first time ever) a non-VW oil filter. It was a Sunday and my VW garage was shut so I popped down to the local branch of a well known car assessory shop and got one of their filters. -
Shogun Power Steering 12 Mar 2003 (Forum)
This explains the loss of inicators and the loss of PST, the gear lever was still in Drive (auto). I have played about with the car on my drive, cant find a problem now.... any ideas?? -
Alfa Romeo 156 4 Mar 2003 (Forum)
The problem is quite dangerous as steering and brakes are lost even if speed is low. It only occurs about once per month probably because the car only covers about 4,500 miles per year. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thomas Edwards -
Astra 1.7 Dti 05/00 management light at 22 Jan 2003 (Forum)
(Astra 1.7 16v DOHC Isuzu (Y17DT)engine May 2000) Here's a tip for new Astra drivers Got the car at 41K covered 3k without a hitch until i braked suddenly the other night. As i pulled off from stationary, the management light came on and stayed on.(had been driving for around 20 minutes at the time) Pulled over, turned the ignition off waited about 5 minutes then started it again and light was off. great As i pulled away the management light came on again (drove approx 3 metres) Into Vauxhall for diagnose check. glowplugs or brakelight it said sure enough. 76p spent on TWO brake light bulbs, and all is well. -
Leaking Omega EGR valve/pipe 9 Oct 2002 (Forum)
After the replacement of the rocker cover gaskets on my(*) '94 3.0 Omega a few weeks ago, the idle, especially from cold has been noisy. The noise disappears when the engine is warm, though the idle is still not as ultra smooth as it used to be. -
Peugeot HDi -clutching at straws? 28 Aug 2002 (Forum)
It hasn't lost a drop since being topped up, but my local dealer here suggests I replace the master cylinder 'just in case' at a cost of £420 (my warranty only covered 12 months). I don't believe in the supernatural, nor pointless bills. Does anyone have an idea as to what may have caused this, given that the car was serviced 3 months ago? DickCD -
Hyundai i20 (2009) - new car purchase - am I being unrealistic? 28 May 2009 (Forum)
(I had also mentioned several days ago we would want to see it, so they knew we wanted to). Anyway, went out the back and found the car. It was covered in filth - sticky sap, bird droppings etc - so bad there was no way I could check for marks. Also, had a look on the windscreen and think the car was built last November, so already 6 months old.
