  Hi, The gearbox on my Automatic VW Golf MK 5 is lurching and not well, but there is no check engine light or error code. Based on the sound of it/ how it drives, one garage said that the valve body needs replacing and would cost approx £500, but that they’re not able to do it (don’t do that model or something).

  Ive had a Ford Mondeo for 2 years from 5k miles (Ford Direct Car) its now done 70k miles mostly on the motorway. Ive had 3 Fuel Vapourisers & 1 Alternator in 24 months all under Warranty. Its an Automatic 210 twin turbo. Not really that quick either.  Now the Flywheel (yes it does have one) has gone (still drivable) and it all needs replacing they have quoted me £2000. WOW, for a new clutch kit and flywheel.

  How can I get into the driver's door or bonnet of a 2005 (K12) Nissan Micra automatic? Its battery has been removed for charging and its nearside is close to a house wall. I can move the bonnet safety catch with a screwdriver but as far as I can tell it will not release the bonnet.

  My automatic gearbox keeps going into limp mode while in drive. Itp then brings up the transmission cog on dashboard with the error code gear monitoring 4 and gear monitoring 5. When i put in sports mode it hardly even happens.

  They don't need a big car, and I think are inclined to go for another VW, probably a Polo.  I'd leave well alone but the remark "VW do good small automatics don't they" made me wonder. I suggested looking at a Mazda 2 - a right sized engine, no turbo, and a torque converter auto I think.  If my MX-5 with the Skyactive-G engine is anything to go by, it will also get a lot nearer to its claimed mpg figures than a TSI engine.

  Our fleet of lorries  (dustcarts) are just only a year old but one driver last week had to be recovered from Blackheath hill due to the transmission failing, the gearbox is in question is the Allison 6 speed heavy duty automatic gearbox as found in all sorts of heavy duty applications like earth moving equipment. Gordon Bent might know of the gear box and so might others on here.   The fitters have blamed driver error saying he must have been holding it on the throttle whilst quing in traffic but these vehicles are double shifted and have a hard life and I've only ever known one other transmission to fail and that was on a 10 year old vehicle that had seen a hard life and all that went was the torque converter.

  At 130,000 miles the automatic gearbox intermittently fails to select 5th. When this happens the LCD display for gear selected in manual (tiptronic) mode remains blank when it should light up and display the gear selected. Intermittently fails to select 1st so pulling away is like a manual with clutch slip - too many revs.

My view is that the automatic gearbox is possibly the source of the problem or perhaps, the "drive by wire" accelerator system, because the whine becomes more intense on blipping the pedal. I believe the DBW system works via two potentiometers, varying the output according to pedal pressure, so presumably an electrical current is generated.
