Mike Rutherfords Champions 7 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Mike Rutherfords Premiership champions If there were football-style league tables for the world's car makers, a few huge and prestigious manufacturers would currently be staring relegation in the face. I'm thinking of companies such as the once-great Jeep, which was last week named by Warranty Direct as the maker of cars that develop the most failures. -

KIA Sorento SUV (2003 - 2009) - Kia Sorento Manual Gearbox Failure at 60k miles 21 Feb 2011 (Forum)
He managed to get the tyres on the car to last to 50,000 miles! I don't feel that it is reasonable to have to replace a gearbox on a five-year old, 60,000 mile, Kia serviced car. Although it does get used for towing, it doesn't do a big mileage pulling the 'van and it's not a big 'van for the size of car. -
SAAB 9-5 (1997 - 2009) - Blown turbo woes 12 Jun 2009 (Forum)
It has always been serviced regularly in line with Saabs recommendations as we are aware of the sludge problem. (The timing chain etc was changed under warranty at the time she bought the car) Two months ago she had a problem starting the car and said it kept stalling so she booked it in to the dealers. They fitted a new oxygen sensor. Problem was still there. -
Lexus, Toyota, GM, others - Hybrids - good to drive? how about 2nd hand 24 Jan 2014 (Forum)
Ideally I would like something that has been around a couple of years so I can look for a 2nd hand one at dealers, but when I did look at the 400h (and before deciding it was too big for me), I also learnt that most used car warranty schemes do not cover the electric power train of a hybrid (such as batteries). With the Prius now being around 10 years, its a good time to ask, are Hybrids a risky second hand buy? -
Used cars of the year 13 Oct 2019 (Forum)
Few Japanese cars get a mention, it’s again based on how well a car handles, looks and goes over reliability, durability and longterm costs. Which are things any used buyer should prioritise. So I thought I’d list my own used cars of the year awards based on my experience of buying and selling them over the years. -

Ford KA, KA2, KA3 (1996 - 2008) - rust around the rear wiper blade 7 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Cheating, I know, but atleast I wouldn't have to be reminded of the rust problem every time I walk up to the car. Does anyone know if larger diameter rubber sheaths are available, and where I can source one? And how should I go about touching up the paintwork? I have tried to use a little brush supplied with a tube of touch-up paint supplied by Ford, but the result looks terrible. -
Lights, Complex????? 11 Mar 2002 (Forum)
The instructions were simple, bolt in lights behind bumper, plug into wiring plug nearby, replace blanking pannel with new pannel, replace switch 'blank' with switch and plug in wiring from behind the blank, fit relay into fusebox in the place marked front fog. All went well until it came time to try them. No Joy. I checked the bulbs which were OK, I used the rear fog light switch to illiminate that, still no joy, I swapped the relay with the air con relay which are identicle, still no joy. I decided to ask my "friendly" local main dealer as to whether i could have faulty wiring in my vehicle and should I be booking it in under warranty. -

Collating BR FAQ on TDi chip upgrades 11 Sep 2003 (Forum)
As for my own interest, I reckon that paying out £250 or so for Upsolute to upgrade my Passat is probably a better value option than changing the car for a newer, faster equivalent with the same level of kit. According to the Upsolute site, their chip would take power from 110 to 143 bhp and torque from 173 to 214 lb ft. Once it's out of extended warranty in February I'll probably go ahead and do the deed. -

Renault Scenic (2003 - 2009) - Grand Scenic - 1 yr / 16,000 mile report. 21 Mar 2008 (Forum)
It still feels like a fairly new car overall. The car itself is a joy both to drive and to live with. On the road it's perky, refined, comfortable and quiet. Controls and suspension are optimised for comfort and ease of operation rather than feel (numb electric PAS and well overservoed brakes, for example), but in the context of this kind of car it's fine. -
Citroen Berlingo Multispace (1998 - 2010) - 15K and one year in. 22 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Twelve months later, here are my experiences and opinions. Image. Let's face it, it is an issue and to be honest SWMBO had huge reservations, seeing the car as the preserve of eccentrics/the very old/ the very odd. One day after I bought the car I was approached by a couple in a supermarket carpark. they had identified a Berlingo as ticking all their boxes for a second car (no.1 was the 3 Series they got out of I presumed) but ......image.
