  • Fabric roofs and chamois 11 Apr 2007 (Forum)
(I realise not to use the chamois on the roof, btw!) Happy Easter to all Lee -- He\'s a cheeky wind-up scamster and he\'s on the radio....
  • 'Supercharging' screenwash 25 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Listening to the radio the other day, I hear that we are in for a particularly cold winter. Bearing in mind that I use ready-mixed screenwash and I have substantial quantities of it (suitable for temperatures down to -7), I was wondering about adding a quantity of Methylated Spirits or alcohol to the screenwash reservoir the night before a 'cold snap' as they say, in order to give the fluid some extra anti-icing properties.
  • Suspension specialist north London 11 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Also - while we're on the subject it's a reshaped end of 99 'S' model by the way - it's got a very stupid red screen which gives info about the radio/cassette and heating/fan which turns itself on all the time so we have to remove a fuse from under the steering wheel whenever we get out! I understand it may be a short in a metal box (stop me if I am getting too technical) behind the screen, so an electrics specialist would be useful too!
  • Fines for idling engines 11 Jul 2006 (Forum)
One of the councils up here are running adverts on the radio saying the usual, how bad it is for the environment etc if you leave your car engine running whilst parked up, so you will now be fined if caught doing this. But how bad exactly is it? If you are sitting stationery at side of road and a car drives past at 30mph who is polluting the most?
  • £8K repair bill. Blame the dog? 31 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Johnny moved into the passenger seat to prise him free but Harvey jumped across and hit the accelerator pedal. The £70,000 car ploughed into a skip near the Capital Radio host's South London home. Johnny said: "The funniest part was having to explain to my insurers. I couldn't make a claim as Harvey wasn't a named driver on the policy."" How could this have happened?
  • Growing consumer debt 6 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Heard an item on the radio recently which quite surprised me. Apparently consumer borrowing in the UK is growing by £1m every four minutes - much of borrowed to spend on cars. This item reminded of an incident recently when I was selling a Mercedes (a W202).
  • Mr. Lucky 27 Jul 2005 (Forum)
Traffic report slow between 14 and 23. Can see it stationary up the hill as I glide off on to an empty M40. Here on the radio of big problems 6 to 8 northbound so glad I chose the M40. Take the new dual carriage A43 down to my destination. Gliding under the M1 at 15a I see it is at a standstill northbound as well. Nightmare day for the motorways avoided by me by more luck than judgement.
  • Speeding (mostly excl cameras) XXVI 14 Feb 2005 (Forum)
f=2&t=29067 ....I put forward the argument that the government would sneak in satellite tracking by adding it to motoring offenders cars and then rolling it out to other people as either a carrot (offenders)or a stick (discounts on insurance), then soon everyone would have to have it. Well I almost fell of my chair this morning, less than a week later, when LBC Radio news said that the government was proposing "tracking repeat speeding offenders cars". Us motorists, should get together to resist moves like this, as our rights are being gradually eroded as we sleep walk to complete control of our motoring lives.
  • Mechanic Drove 25 Miles To Ascertain Fau 19 Jan 2005 (Forum)
I felt the mileage was very high - took my car and as I was drving out as the dealer was closing, noted the trip meter had an additonal 25 mls clocked and radio was on quite high. Any views, experiences and action I should take - I have no evidence re the mileage when I left the car at the main dealer, who is a franchised dealer. Thanks in advance LD
  • Blown Audi A4 parking light 28 Dec 2004 (Forum)
This wouldn't be a problem except this has triggered a permanent warning on my driver information system where the radio display normally lives. This is very annoying. I popped up the bonnet and it looks like access to the lights are very restricted. There seem to be 2 bulb housings, one for the Xenon's and one for the parking and main beam bulbs.
  • What every car should have, but doesn't 28 Jul 2004 (Forum)
And they should be decent sockets, not these silly 'cigar lighter' things which are huge and waste space. 2. A standard radio interface (I know there have been several attempts) 3. A standard mobile phone interface, connected to the speakers and with a built in microphone. Just purchase a standard holder for your make/model of phone and plug it in. 4.
  • Final Car 18 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Am downsizing from a 2-0ltr Vectra to a 1-6ltr Astra (yes I know the general opinions on Vauxhall but I have a first class local agent and a good rapport with their staff.)I have chosen the Club model it has no ABS to go wrong green tinted glass(it stands on drive so I dont want the trim fading)I have chosen the no cost option of an alectric sun roof in place of the standard Air/Con,and finally it has the same radio as in the Vectra ie takes tapes of which I have plenty instead of CDs. I am the octogenarian from how old are you and feel I will be leaving my wife a car with less expensive things to go wrong but adequate for the purpose.
  • Primera starting problem 7 Oct 2003 (Forum)
I'm not sure whether it's coincidental but it seems to start better with the clutch depressed and the radio off (please, no laughing). Anyone got any ideas? Cheers Mark
  • Cheaper cars? 2 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Im not talking air con here but wind up windows full stop. Have a catch and locking mechanism to slide them up and down. No carpets, just rubber mats. Radio, ash trays, glove compartments get rid of the lot. No servo brakes and ABS right out. Just the bare minimum, although I would have to have fabric seats to sit on and in this country some form of heater.
  • Car's been done 24 Jan 2003 (Forum)
Under normal circumstances the car would be alarmed and operated by remote, so the locks are nothing but a liability anyway. Don't know why they picked his car, there was *nothing* in it, even the radio front was off. Still, they must have enjoyed themselves 'cos they also had a dump on the front lawn! At least they didn;t get into the car to relieve themselves in it. :) Blue
  • Pre purchase banger checks. 25 Nov 2002 (Forum)
MOT Reason for Sale How long have you owned it. Checks: Tyres Sills Gen. Body condition Signs of leaks. Radio/Interior electrics. Drive Shaft Boots Compression test (Is this over kill?) Listen for rattles at all revs Coolant Oil Brake noise Does it drive straight with hands off wheel Ditto under braking. -- These are my own opinions, and not necessarily those of all Toads.
  • vibration when winding steering wheel 15 Oct 2002 (Forum)
The vibration can be felt through the body more than the steering wheel and sounds quite loud (loud enough to hear over a moderate radio volume) Many thanks in advance Ben
  • Well-priced basic 12v power pack 10 Sep 2002 (Forum)
No extras like built-in compressors, but very useful if you are: (1) As daft as me and leave lights, radio etc. occasionally. (2) Have a project or a temporary non-runner in the garage. It's a close relative of something that was best budget buy in Car Mechanics when they last tested booster packs, but with slightly shorter leads and no oddments pouch on the back.
  • Driving old clunkers. Why not? 28 Jan 2002 (Forum)
Purring along the Chester High Road at 70 mph on the Wirral last night in my 10 year old Volvo 740 SE, I wondered how a newer, more modern car would feel. How could it be better? Bob Harris on the radio, memories of grilled mushrooms with Brie and bacon as a starter, rib-eye steak, perfectly cooked by the chef at the Clegg Arms, friendly, attractive waitresses, good company, fine wine (for the others, not me, I drank a jug of water).
  • Audi A3 2.0 TDi 170PS DSG - a review 30 Jul 2007 (Forum)
For anyone into cricket or the shipping forecast LW bands are no longer offered. The radio station is now displayed between the speedo and rev counter, something which wasn?t available on the SE unless you chose the drivers information system option. The drinks holder above the radio has been changed to a drawer for fuel station loyalty cards and is now below the radio, as is the ESP button.
