Toyota Celica - Grinding noise on stopping 11 Sep 2011 (Forum)
Mr B has just had his back brake discs and pads replaced (he grudgingly paid up as he wouldn't have passed his MOT; the fanbelt was cack too but that's another story) He is now concerned that, when he rolls to a stop without touching the brakes, he is stopping earlier than he should do and there's a graunching noise from the back brakes. -
Peugeot 205 - MOT Fail 16 Sep 2010 (Forum)
Hi, car had its MOT yesterday and failed reasons being 1) Offside rear brake binding 2) Front brake imbalance 27% 3) Rear exhaust has major leak 4) Exhaust emissions lambda reading after 2nd fast idle outside specified limits Now they have quoted me 70 quid to sort the exhaust and said this will prob fix the emissions problem, but couldn't give me a quote on the brakes as they said it need "investigating". -

Peugeot 106 (1991 - 2002) - 97 1.5 Brake calliper sticking on (offside front) 31 May 2009 (Forum)
I am at my wit's end with my car. I know it's old but has only done 70k miles. I have an intermittent fault with the brake sticking on and the wheel getting red hot. The garage replaced the calliper only 200 miles ago. (it had a new wheel bearing at the same time). Now it is happening again. I have checked there is no drop in the brake fluid level. -
Peugeot 406 (1999 - 2004) - 01 2.0 hdi Squealing brakes 6 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Hi all. Whenever the temperature drops to 5oC or below, my front brakes start to squeal? They start to squeal after I have used them, and can keep squealing for 300 yards or so, when driving through town. When on a A-road or M'way, above around 50mph, the squealing stops. -

(left carless for 4 days due to it failng mot on brake pads!!!) -
Vauxhall Zafira A (1999 - 2005) - 1999 1.8 auto g'box interlock / brake lights 29 Dec 2008 (Forum)
As a temporary fix a local garage disconnected the interlock solenoid but I found out today that now the brake lights don't work! This is a major problem as we need to use the car over the Christmas holiday and we want to be legal. Any help how to get the brake lights working again gratefully received. I am a professional engineer so should be able to rig something up if someone can tell me what I need to do. -
Peugeot 406 (1999 - 2004) - 2000 2.0HDI Noise when stopped from brakes 31 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Hi peeps, i get a sort of kettle whistling noise from my brake system when i turn the engine off (unless i stop it with my foot on the brake).I can stop it after by pumping the pedal.I have popped the bonnet and the sound appears to be coming from one of two small units tucked under the vent under the windscreen. They look like some ort of vacuum valve or regulator (about the size of two cotton reels) with a couple of pipes comin/going from them just curious to know if someone can tell me what they are and if so can they/it be repaired or have to replace.Any info is greatfully received.Thanx in advance. -
Ford Mondeo II (1996 - 2000) - 1999 1.8 TD Car shakes when I apply the brakes 21 Feb 2008 (Forum)
All, I have a Ford Mondeo diesel, 1.8. It now shakes quite a lot when I apply the brakes and if the car is travelling at about 40-60mph, especially the steering wheel there the shaking is most prominent. Below this (say at 20mph), there is no shaking when I brake. Does anyone know what is causing this? -
Complete Brake Failure - Volvo 240SE 23 Oct 2006 (Forum)
As you can imaging I received a phone call form a very shaken wife. Fluid level ok just no brakes. With the engine off there is some resistance but with the servo it's the floor. Although these cars have dual circuit bakes this complete failure is rare. It appears the Master Cylinder has flipped both seals. -
Mercedes E320CDI Brake Pump Noise 14 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Hi Room I have a 6 month old MB E320CDI and the hydraulic pump that operates the braking system seems rather noisy. After 3 pumps on the brake the pump starts up for about 3 seconds then shuts off. When the engine is running its not so intrusive however it often starts first thing in the morning when I put the key in the ignition (priming itself I guess!) -
Bleeding brakes - \'94 Passat 1.8 petrol 26 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I\'ve just replaced the brake fluid on my car using a Gunsons easibleed kit. The difficulty I had was getting the fluid to flow at a reasonable rate from the rear brakes. Afterwards I thought it might be something to do with the compensating valve. -

Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 16-11-2019 Part 2 17 Nov 2019 (Forum)
The pads need to come out (highly likely the dealer only squirted brake cleaner at them) and be inspected, upon which there will probably be a shiny section or two to show where this high frequency rubbing is taking place, the answer is a proper clean up followed by the application of the correct brake grease on those parts. -
