  • Two Stroke / Four Stroke 19 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Can some one out there enlighten me on the following questions that have been puzzling me for years, but nobody I have asked has been able to answer? Why do two strokes need oil mixed with the fuel instead of using a seperate supply from a sump, and in the same vein, how come four strokes need valve gear and all the associated mechanics when a two stroke can draw in fuel through a port in the cylinder?
  • Which diesel fuel? 4 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I have followed the threads about petrol quality and it seems a safe bet to use Texaco, Shell or Esso every now and again. It's only a couple £ a year...
  • Pug406 petrol leak 15 Sep 2003 (Forum)
My 406 has started seeping petrol from the junction of a small pipe with the top of (I think)the fuel pressure regulator, the pipe in question is about 3\" long with a square metal elbow at the top with a pipe from that disappearing under a plastic cover. I need advice on these points please: With the engine off will there be fuel in the short pipe?
  • What car shall I get? 29 Jul 2003 (Forum)
I do not want a car that sits in the garage all the time, or that is expensive. Furthermore, I want good fuel economy and a simple engine that I can work on myself. I was thinking of the Toyota Carina E 2.0i. Is this a good car and what fuel economy do current owners get from such a car? I have seen 50,000 mile fsh Carina's for around my price bracket.
  • Engine Technology 2 Jul 2003 (Forum)

  • Mercedes C220 Diesel Pump 21 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Another thing is the engine runs on for 3-4 seconds after turning the ignition off. Took the car to local garage that specialises in MB and he put his test box on, the message : " FUEL INJECTION SHUT OFF VALVE" came up. The question is should I get the Fuel Injection Valve replaced or should I get a new diesel pump?
  • Blue smoke on deceleration 18 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Does anyone have any ideas as to what this may be? I have fitted new injectors and checked that there is no air in the fuel lines, changed the fuel and air filter. These seem to have helped but still very imbarrasing on short journeys to work on cold days! Please can anyone help?
  • Golf Mk2 GTI poor running 2 Oct 2002 (Forum)
It's almost like the feeling you get when you take your accelerator off the acclelerator for a fraction of a second (I'm not!). Fuel consumption down by about 6mpg. Car has new plugs, oil, fuel filter -next move is to check mix but I'm assuming its okay as it passed the MOT? Any ideas out there? Help! Tim p.s. engine runs smoothly above 3000 revs
  • Diesel Starting Problems 17 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Took it to a garage and they checked the glow plugs etc and could find nothing wrong. Have replaced the fuel filter. Problem is only recent - last 2 months. Later in the day - to come home, the car starts no problem. Only seems to be first thing in the morning. Any suggestions? Could there be a problem with condensation in the fuel tank ???
  • Diesel waxing 19 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Do the fuel companies still alter diesel at the refinery, according to season, to avoid the waxing that used to plague HGVs?
  • 2003 Ford Mondeo 2.0 Tdci 130 - 2003 Mondeo 2.0 Tdci 130 Trusty Glow Plug Light! 13 Feb 2012 (Forum)
The first time this light came on, on a long run, and would not go away on restart, I took the car to a Ford garage and they told be the fault code was "Knock threshold reached on number 3 injector", so after the first recode (which cleared the error for about 5000 miles), when the error came up a second time (this time on "number 2 injector"), I bit the bullet and had all four injectors and the fuel pump reconditioned by a very reputable firm, at this time I also replaced the DM flywheel (which was filling my starter motor full of grindings) and the fuel filter. The filter was clear, as was the fuel pump, so my fears of rubbish coming through the fuel line were removed.
  • Vauxhall Corsa CDTi 05 plate - V Bad fuel consumption + minor electrical niggles 26 Jan 2011 (Forum)
Surely to god I would notice a leak like that.  I wondered does the ECU do anything with fuel (DH talks about the mix on his old escort when he was younger I know this is fuel v air - won't entertain cars now you can't tinker).  I wonder because I have had a series of minor and inconsistent electric blips.
  • Ford Escort - 95 1.4i Acapulco - Electrical problem... 27 Mar 2010 (Forum)
This is done through the output of R2 (the dubiously named 'power hold relay') - The output of R2 is also used to pull up the fuel pump relay (R3). This would seem to explain my fuel starvation symptoms . While fault/short has been developing it's been pulling current and away from R3 and de-activating the fuel pump. - I currently have a short either in cables or systems mentioned above down circuit of F13.
  • Vauxhall Astra F (1991 - 1998) - 96 1.7 Diesel. Wierd fault: fuel stop / cut off so 28 Nov 2009 (Forum)
My neighbour's 1996/7 Astra 1.7 TD has a strange problem developing (I think!), related to the fuel cut-off solenoid(s?) on the fuel pump. He has had difficult cold starting, (turning over for ages, unevenly, then eventually starting with a cloud of smoke and still uneven for a few seconds), so I checked the glow plug feed / timer, and then replaced the glow plugs.
  • 2003 1.8l Mondeo Estate, 144k miles - Ford Mondeo Mk3 Hesitates and Stutters during acce 23 Apr 2015 (Forum)
Answer from the other web page below:  It could be the coil pack, they are incredibly sensitive to damage if the engine is turned over with a plug lead disconnected - they generate such a high voltage without a plug to limit it, that the internal insulation breaks down. It could also be a partial blockage in the fuel system, if changing the fuel filter disturbed some crud in the pipes. A tank of Premium unleaded (eg. V-Power) should help that, they contain fuel system cleaners. Or put a dose of fuel system cleaner additive through it..
  • Mazda Mazda 6 (2002 - 2007) - 03 2.0 Engine cutting out - diesel 17 Oct 2009 (Forum)
My car had a full service history up until I bought it, but when we changed the fuel / diesel filter I found it to be very, very dirty inside and was also surprised to see it was a Denso fuel filter which lead me to believe it may never have been replaced from new, maybe some of you out there could tell me more?
  • Fuel Saving Driving Techniques 31 Jan 2020 (Forum)
One of the downsides of engaging 'cruise control' in your car is that it is uses more fuel than allowing the driver to have full control over the throttle opening. Assuming that you are travelling at a reasonable and legal speed on a dual carriageway or motorway and that you are not 'in a hurry', then a significant fuel saving can be made by allowing the car to gently gather speed (and momentum) on each downgrade, up to say 65 or 70 mph, and then try not to further depress your accelerator on the upgrade, such that the car progressively but slowly reduces speed on the following upgrade, resulting in the speed falling to maybe 55 or 50 mph at the end of the uphill gradient.
  • Citroen Xantia 2.0 HDi - Citroen Xantia, Startup issues 25 Apr 2014 (Forum)
This led me to believe that the immobiliser kicked in (for some reason) and so this cuts off power to the fuel pump and so no fuel getting to the engine. After unplugging battery, charging it up, removing shunt fuse and then banging the fuel tank (where fuel pump was), I finally got it up and starting.
  • SAAB 9-3 (2002 - 2007) - 2003 2.2 TID - loss of power 25 Feb 2014 (Forum)
Still wont start.... Had a look round the car etc and seems that no fuel is getting to the fuel filter.... Put diesel straight into the filter and it seems to try and start easier, but wont actually start. Looks like the fuel pump. Any ideas on that? POST 3 - UPDATE Getting a tow to SarbKar in Liverpool on Thursday - £30 They will run Tech II diags - £50 What will they then do??
  • Peugeot 307 2. 0 HDI Xsi 136 - PEUGEOT 307 HDI HOT STALLING? 25 Sep 2012 (Forum)
I foolishly lent it to a friend who accidentally filled it up with petrol and then continued to drive it without realising. After cleaning the fuel out and refilling with fresh fuel the car still would not start, and even after towing to attempt to bump start it still would not start. The Cat was replaced, the injectors were replaced and the DPF filter was cleaned through with a jet wash and then with DPF cleaner.
