  • FIAT Grande Punto (2006 - 2009) - 2007 1.9 Poor Fuel Economy After Crash 28 Nov 2008 (Forum)
My car has been repaired, new bumper, wings, bonnet, radiator, washer bottle etc etc. Any how I have now noticed that my average fuel consumption has gone from being about 42mpg down to 35mpg after the crash. The only thing I can think is that when the accident happened all the coolant from the engine leaked out of the pipe that connects to the intercooler.
  • Mazda 626 (1987 - 1991) - Why is my fuel consumption so good? 6 Jun 2008 (Forum)
I do a limited amount of urban driving, and I am sure my reading of the road ahead, with subsequent lack of heavy braking helps, but I still manage to average 37mpg week in, week out, even with climate control permanently switched on and a fully loaded 6 disc CD player playing loudly. Is there anyone else out there whose fuel consumption has exceeded expectations...all I have read about to date are BRs whose consumption has been disappointing. The car runs exclusively on Shell (I dont think this makes a difference, but its cleaning qualities were recommended) and has new Michelin Energy tyres fitted.
  • Mazda Mazda 6 (2002 - 2007) - 02 diesel no power or acceleration 12 Apr 2008 (Forum)
They said it could be dirt in the fuel system and said they cleaned out the tank and fuel system. After that hadn't made any difference they then said it could be the micro filters in the injectors and they would need replaced costing at least £1000 on top of the £700 pounds they charged for the injector pump to be reconditioned.
  • Vauxhall Astra G Petrol (1998 - 2004) - 2003 1.6 dualfuel LPG engine keeps cutting out. 8 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Manufacturer: Vauxhall. Model: Astra. Type: Estate. Fuel: Dual fuel - LPG/Petrol. Trim: Elegance. Engine: 1600cc. Registered: 2003. Mileage: 52k. ***This only happens when running on LPG*** If I am slowing the vehicle down using just the the gears, as in approaching, roundabouts, give ways junctions or similar, when I lift the clutch to change gear (either up or down the box) the revs drop off almost instantly once the engine rpm is around 1.500 rpm (tickover is roughly 900rpm) and the engine simply cuts out.
  • Shell V-Power diesel: how does it sound to you? 3 Oct 2007 (Forum)
of 47.4 mpg, where 42 is more typical. I've still got a couple of long trips to do this week, so I'll use the regular fuel as a control, to see if it's the fuel or the journey. But it's the sound I'm interested in. Anyone else noticed any audible effects of 'premium' fuels?
  • Range Rover - surging and poor starting 22 Jul 2007 (Forum)
I don't think this is the problem, and given the price for the job we won't be happy if it doesn't solve the problem. The poor starting appears to be air in the fuel system, and I suspect that when they stripped it down to replace the fuel pump (which I don't deny was faulty), something wasn't tightened up properly. What concerns me is that I can't see how replacing an injector pump will solve the issue, nor can I see what it has to do with the "surging" which leads me to suspect the MAF sensor.
  • 406 hdi 2.2 fuel filter warning (FAP) 2 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Hi all Blasted 406 has a new error-says fuel filter needs cleaning (FAP)with a sort of an indicator lamp on the top right hand side of the dash showing a schematic pipe with some dust particles in it. Shortly after the management system light has also lit (the one bottom centre that looks a tad like a brake cylinder) saying Anti Pollution system has failed, which I take as a consequence of this filter not doing it's job.
  • Fuel at Leeming Bar services - not! 7 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Although I wasn't desperately short of petrol but getting low, I decided to fill up at Leeming Bar services - all the signs on the A1 indicated a full range of services including fuel. When I got there, there was the remains of what had once been a petrol forecourt. Now, it's clear that this has been disused for some time - dead as a dodo and large concrete blocks diverting the services road round it.
  • VW Golf 1.4cl 1992 - cold starting probs 24 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Sounds like it's firing on less than all four, but clears itself and the problem never reappears after the car warms up. Plugs and lead and dis cap look OK. Replaced fuel and air filters about 12 months ago. Top of carb looks clean and none of the hoses seem to have leaks. Tail pipe is a bit sooty. Took it to (competent) garage a while ago before this problem started, and had them check it over because fuel consumption had climbed.
  • Audi A6 smoke 17 Oct 2004 (Forum)
This email has been prompted by reading an article in last Saturday's "Motoring Telegraph", the chap in the article has run Audis for years and said that he had been pulled over several times by the police for excessive smoke in a couple of his cars. Honest John has made a comment in the past about fuel timing in these cars needing regular attention, which mine has not had. I have not gone to the bother of having the fuel timing looked at because I believe that poor fuel economy would be present if the timing wasn't correct: the mpg is as good as it has ever been - excellent.
  • Mondeo diesel starting - or not... 24 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Performance is pretty good for a diesel with over 160,000 miles and averaging 50 mpg so I would discount fuel starvation or air in the system; doesn't hesitate, pulls well enough, air filter is 3 months old. I do use Safeway fuel but have, for the last 2 months, been using Millers Diesel Power Plus (no significant obvious gains or losses there).

  • Mazda MX-6 12 Apr 2001 (Forum)
I currently drive a mazda mx-6 (as the subject indicates) and find it a very fun drive (although the cabin is a bit rattly) on a 94M with 77k. I have read the manual and spec which states that it is a 60 litre fuel tank. I have never been able to put anywhere near 60 litres in. The fuel warning light comes on just under the 1/4 tank mark and if I fill up straight away it usually comes to 35 or 40. I understand that the car is low and the fuel tank is probably designed around the spare wheel, but is this common, or can I drive to what I should expect the car to be able to do on a full tank (some 350 miles) or keep on filling up at 250 - 300 miles?

  • 2016 Fiesta 1.24 - Petrol Smell 12 Apr 2020 (Forum)
Recently,I have noticed a strong smell of petrol at the lower back of my car when parked.Thinks! It could be the purge line come off the Evap. canister or a leak in the return fuel line but as there is no evidence of wet fuel,I think the second cause is unlikely. Both these would need the tank dropped to check.Further thinking,All my driving recently has been a one- mile  each way journey to a local supermarket. As the canister is only purged when engine is in "closed loop" mode ie.not idle or "WOT",could this be the cause?
  • Ford S-max 2006 manual petrol - S-max start but then stalls 25 Mar 2020 (Forum)
Once started,  I press on the accelerator, but no revs and then the car stalls.   When I turn the ignition on, I am not hearing the fuel pump priming.  But if the fuel pump was busted, would the car start in the 1st place?   Looking at the pump, it looks fine, no burn or melting marks. I have not done a voltage check  yet.
  • 2013 Ford Fusion - 1.6L ecoboost running on 2 cylinders 2 Feb 2020 (Forum)

It really gets my goat when online reporters talk about hydrogen as if it's some carbon-free fuel.

  • Honest John’s Motoring Agony Column 24-06-2017 Part 2 26 Jun 2017 (Forum)
Tens of thousands of people a year misfuel petrol into diesel, but only about 4 people a year manage to get diesel into a petrol car, because the diesel fuelling nozzle won't fit (you have to be REALLY determined and dribble the fuel in). Did he fuel it by using his own canister? Perhaps he was using red diesel or something like that - an extremely expensive error!
