• Steering wheel (with airbag) removal 9 Dec 2004 (Forum)
  I'm needing to remove the steering wheel to replace the light stalk. The car (95 TD Escort) is fitted with an airbag. The manual says to disconnect the battery, cover the leads to stop the possibilty of them arcing. And thats it!!! Is this right or is there anything else to watch out for? I don't fancy the airbag going off in my face!!! Cheers Rob

  It has become some what tempremental, sometimes working sometimes not. Ford guys say buy a new one the battery is fine, cost £50 + £50 programming fee, what a rip off. Any one know an alternate (legal) option
• Ford Focus central locking & remote key 6 Feb 2004 (Forum)
  I've a V reg Focus and the remote key & central locking has failed.I've replaced the battery in the key but no joy.The central locking will not work,either from the drivers door or the passenger door.Also the button on the dash to release the boot also fails.I'm able to lock the car from both doors.Any ideas ?

  I am planning to change the coolent and thermostat on my Fiesta Zetec 1.25. To do this I need to remove the alternator, and of course disconnect the battery. I have heard that memory saving devices are available to save the cars ECU settings. Are they really necessary? and if so what devices are available to the DIY\'er? Your advice please. Regards Andrew

  I want to start my Dutton (which needs a new loom) by bypassing the ignition. I have provided a + and - to the coil direct from battery, then turned the engine over using the starter. I am not getting a spark from the HT leads? Does the body of the coil need an earth? Is it a live or earth wire which goes into the distributor? Thanks Ste

  Does anyone no how to reset the code on an old radio cassette stereo? I recently had problems with an alarm and had to disconnect the battery, hence prompting the radio to ask for the code, which I don't have as it is a second hand car. The stereo is not factory fitted and therefore I can't ask the manufacturer. The car is a rover 218 sld 1993. any tips ??

  Does anyone know if there was a modification on Citroen diesels to replace the filter asembly and primer on the side of the battery housing.I have a 2.5TD XM which has had an inline Bosch filter fitted and the assembly removed. This was done by a Citroen dealer but another doubts the move. Car is a 1995 VSX estate and there are no problems with the inline arrangements.

  I know there are more sensible options but I think the joy I'd get from the car is worth a bit of extra money and the risk of financial oblivion if the battery dies. My max budget would be £30k but I've seen older model 3's for less than 20.

  Left the car with the garage. They ran computer diagnostics but can find no fault. Battery tested and perfect. Spoken to other garages but no-one can tell me what the fault is, why it happened or whether it will happen again. Last garage told me they couldn’t diagnose an intermittent fault if it wasn’t in progress at the time.

  My question is how does the interior heater of an pure EV work (Not a hybrid)? Does it use the car batteries? If so, it would surely have flattened the batteries shortly after being stranded leaving the occupants freezing (or dead) and leaving an non-driveable vehicle needing recovered. Or does the heater work of petrol or diesel?

  Take out the battery running, the HEV consumption is working out at 64mpg. I don't think that is too bad. Just shows the WLTP figures for plug-in hybrids are, at best fictitious, at worst very misleading. So, perhaps the declaration of mpg both in 'real mpg' in the HJ column and those given for official purposes should now give a split of this sort

    any ideas of what to do? or try? My guess as of now, is that even thought it says the eterno battery is almost full I am thinking there is a misreading somewhere. So, I thought I will unplug the battery to see if the system resets and it works but I am afraid I will screw something up by doing this.

  But when driving for about 20 mins and getting stuck in traffic for about 5mins, the gearbox locks into 2nd gear and the engine, ABS, traction, battery lights come on, the revs need keeps dropping and the gear postion shows -- instead of P 1 2 3 etc...  It's the AF40 model gearbox on a 1.9 diesel, 06 plate. The engine temp can be around 80 to 88 & gearbox temp 80 to 85 when this happens.

  i went threw water a few months ago but managed to revive my car ive had my started motor replaced but after doing this my battery light came on and ive tested battery it was fine the reading being as been told 12v.5 6 is it the alternator but when putting lights eletrics on it didnt dim and ive checked all fuses in fuse box they were all fine non blown or cracked ive had two macanics look at my car they have said alternator but anthor has said it is because the starter has not been wired up propley but the two macanics have said it was wired up propley just that because my car got flooded it now had a new starter which has now has current goin to alternator which is problem is this true i dnt no what to believe or do as ive took alternator off to get new one any advice would help so i can no for future reference as im no macanic myself thank you

  The car had a new coil pack 2 months ago, a complete service in Feb and complete new exhaust. I have tried disconnecting the battery, tried the spare key nothing. A friend put it on his diagnostic last night and got code PO301 cylinder 1 misfire, so I replaced all 4 spark plugs still nothing. Has anyone any ideas what the problem could be battery, starter motor etc??

  It started intermittently with the dashboard warning lights coming on showing ABS "STOP" faulty, Anti-Pollution Faulty, Braking System Faulty and then the battery light shows and the Speedo goes completely dead. Apart from the steering wheel that goes really hard, the car runs fine. This happened intermittently for a few months and then it just became permanent.

  Replacing the cable fixed it, as the ECU could now talk to the "failed" motor and battery in question. He's wondering if the lease company are going to spot that the eye-wateringly large bill resulting is actually for a load of unnecessary work and a 30EUR cable. I suppose the point of this is that, if you have a Honda with IMA and some bright spark at Honda tells you it needs all the IMA bits replacing, get 'em to check the wiring first.

  Hi, Need some help, having a meltdown! Went out from work this evening and my battery was dead. Couldn't centrally unlock the car, had to open it on the key. Ended up attempting to jump start it and the panel/display/central locking then turned on. However I am having no luck whatsoever when attempting to start the car.

  Thinking I was too low on fuel, I put 5 litres in to show quarter full, but she has not started since and the battery died from trying. I have put a new battery in, and now she wont even turnover. Just goes clunck when I turn the ignition key, and all dash lights go out. Noticing that the Hydraulic pressure warning light stays on, and the STOP command light stays on, after I turn the ignition on and enter my security code, I check the fluid level, and the yellow disc is right at the top of the glass.

  That has improved things but still having problems start of day when very cold, so now figure that some of the existing problem might be glow plugs. It normally does start (when it doesn't I do then need to charge battery). Seems to 'chug' to life - reluctant to turn over almost as if it's the battery struggling even when I know it's fully charged. When it does start it will be fine the rest of the day. Likewise if it's mild overnight rather than freezing it will be ok.
