Why don't daytime running lights illuminate the rear lights too? 2 Mar 2013 (Ask HJ)
I am very much in favour of car drivers using headlights in poor light, and I use mine all winter except for very sunny days, however I have noticed on... -
BMW 520D (2009) - Run-flat tyres - repair and possible alternatives 23 Nov 2012 (Forum)
Is it possible to do this as a DIY job, or is it for properly trained and equipped persons (i.e. garage) only? - Can I replace the tyres with non-run-flats? Not sure if dynamics would be unduly impacted, or whether the inflation warning system would be unhappy (run-flats generally operate at higher pressures). There's a spot in the well of the boot for a spacesaver which would be preferable to wrecking a tyre by having to drive it to the garage. -
Run flat tyres 5 Jul 2012 (Ask HJ)
My wife and I so much agree with your belief that "run flat" tyres might well save our lives but can find no input on which manufacturers other than BMW... -
Any - Most reliable car/cheapest to run to high mileage? 4 Apr 2012 (Forum)
I currently drive about 600 miles/week, and it looks like I will be doing so for a couple of years to come. I'm currently running a 2006 Focus TDCi, which although fairly fuel-efficient (50+mpg), running from 60 to 150k miles has so far cost, apart from usual service, tyres etc: £1,000 - DMF/Clutch £600 - turbo £500 - injector service So the idea that diesel's are great & cheap to run is nonsense - great on a company car/3 years, not for private use over an extended time. -

Volkswagen Golf III - ABS Engine Code, Running SUPER rich. 1 Mar 2011 (Forum)
I purchased for next to nothing, so I expected it to have problems. Anyway, when cold, the car is difficult to start, and does not like to stay running. Once running, it is running so rich that it's pouring smoke out of the tailpipe. Obviously it's missing terribly as well, from the spark plugs being covered in soot from running so rich. So far I've only replaced the Lambda, to no avail. -
Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 1999 1.6 running roughly 30 Nov 2008 (Forum)
I stopped the engine and re-started after about five seconds, it now runs perfect! Drove home (about 60 miles) with no further problems, but the exhaust pipe is definitely showing it running rich. I've done a MPG check and it's doing about 40 MPG, so does not seem to be using fuel to any massive excess at all. -
Peugeot 2008 petrol - Fan running sporadically 8 Jun 2022 (Forum)
The cooling fan appears to have taken on a life of it’s own. It runs on after even the shortest of journeys. Indeed, it ran on when I simply moved the car off the drive this morning. Whilst driving it comes on and goes off in what seems a random way, regardless of the temp display reading. -
Singer Vogue - Borg Warner Type 35 2 Oct 2019 (Forum)
I have a problem with the gearbox. The car will run In 1,st gear (low) no problems. But when I drive it runs great until it shifts up to 2nd then it feels like the engine loses power and starts running as though the engine is seezing up. Any thoughts? -

Can a diesel engine run backwards? 12 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Question is related to a previous posting in which I referred to an as-yet-unexplained 'abnormal running mode' which I experienced in a diesel car. I know that some stationary one-cylinder engines can be started backwards, but can a multi-cylinder diesel vehicle engine do likewise? Oz (as was) -
Citoen HDI "bang",smoke, poor running 23 Sep 2002 (Forum)
Heading for Portsmouth last night, Citroen 1998 HDI 2 years old 29000, A3 exit on M25, loud bang from engine compartment (felt through bulkhead by passenger). Engine still runs, but very smoky and intermittent loss of power with occasional noise that sounds like a miss functioning servo. -
running in, please pass 15 Jun 2022 (Forum)
Amazingly tonight I saw an elderly gentleman in an '04 reg Skoda Fabia with the cardboard sign in the rear window that I haven't seen for years.. 'running in please pass' Apart from raising a wry smile, the question I ask is is this really neccesary anymore? do you really need to treat a brand new car with kid gloves anymore? Run the engine below 4000 rpm for first 1000 miles and no heavy braking for first 500 so you can bed in the brakes? -
2001 Ford mondeo 2.0 tdi - Car feels like it run out of diesel 9 Aug 2010 (Forum)
After 4 weeks did the same thing. They now say it needs new injectors. I dont beleive it. Did I need a new pump and why does it run fine for 4 weeks. When it cuts out, if you wait 30 mins, it will start and run for a time. Urgent reply required before I spend more money on it. -
Citroen Saxo (1997 - 2003) - 00 1.4 lumpy running and cutout on warm-up 4 Oct 2008 (Forum)
My daughters Saxo has the following problem: When a cold start is done, it fires up and runs OK, but after it has been idling or driven for a short while it coughs and splutters and runs really lumpy and throwing out black/grey smoke and sometimes cuts out. It seems as though it is being 'overchoked' just as an old car with a manual choke would have run with the choke fully out after starting it.
