Effect of having insurance cancelled 15 Mar 2003 (Forum)
What Mark (RLBS) says about having difficulty in this situation is certainly true. It is unfortunate as the cancellation wasn't her fault. A popular scam with young people is to only put themselves as named drivers. My sister rightly didn't want to do this and has always had her own policy. Another scam is to put a low-risk parents address when keeping the car in a high-risk area. -
Mercedes Estate - Dodgy Solicitors? 31 Aug 2021 (Forum)
Is it proper that this proposal should have been made at all by an established firm of solicitors, or is it a scam? -
Vw Polo - Insurance Renewal 22 Jul 2011 (Forum)
i also tried lowering my cover to TPFT without NCD and Legals and they came out at £70 cheaper, it is clearly a scam. How can they justify this increase ? I feel discriminated against for being a safe driver, am i alone ? -
Bora stops because the lights don't work 15 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Next morning they phone up saying if was the rear lights that failed. It cost £80 to fix mind you. Is this a scam to get cars into the workshop? Who are VW to tell you to stop driving without telling you why when it is something that isn't likely to damage the car? Talk about nanny state - we have nanny cars now. -
I have a question Volume 47 3 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Sewage, grass seed, under-insurance, funeral garb - an amazingly eclectic selection of subjects! This prompts me to add another: I have been, I have to admit, a complete wally, and been scammed by someone on ebay.I have parted with 600 smackeroos for an item I never received. All I have is a set of bank account details (probably genuine) and an address in N. London (probably incorrect). -
A garage's liability 5 May 2004 (Forum)
As the intervals for cambelts were changed to the lower figure a couple of years ago does anyone think this is a scam from the garage to earn lots of cash in engine repairs from the gullible motorist? My money is still on the incompetancy hypothesis! teabelly -
Is this (motoring) email a scam? 9 Jan 2003 (Forum)
I got this email today. It may be genuine but looks like a scam to me. I can't believe that people who have worked on a project for 21 years can know so little about industry contacts. Sorry it's a bit long. I've removed the return email address to discourage any Back-Roomers from getting involved! -
Mercedes-Benz A-Class - Gumtree Mercedes A200 outstanding finance 1 Feb 2019 (Forum)
His gumtree name is xxxx and phone number xxxx I have included the name and number in case and anyone does a google search and will hopefully end up at this post before potentially being scammed. Thankyou (Edit - for heaven's sake use your common sense. You can't put someone's name and number on a public forum and accuse them of being a scammer.) -
Todays cars are not meant to last! 19 May 2016 (Forum)

Land Rover Freelander (1997 - 2006) - 01 V6 Auto - Selling an used one. 20 Feb 2008 (Forum)
I am very non- mechanical and selling to a private individual fills me with a little dread ,also taking into account the various scams one hears about ,I wonder whether I might make a terrible mistake . Reason for sale is ,a friend has a very desirable car for sale ,so obviously the transaction cannot include P/Ex .Also I am becoming tired of the gas guzzling antics of this car . -

I have a question Volume 67 5 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Anyone come across this one? Just heard of a new Phishing scam from a man in the Midlands. Elderly chap rung up and asked if he was interested in a very good low cost insurance policy that paid a good lump sum in the event of death. How old are you etc. In the process he was asked what area he lived in and "just give me your card number and I will be able to give you a quote". -

Nissan Primera III (1999 - 2002) - 01 1.8 engine management light stays on 12 Sep 2009 (Forum)
A colleague's been quoted £1500 to 'repair the crankshaft' for this. She and her husband know nothing much about cars and I fear a scam. Apart from being a bit overfull with [clean] oil the car seems fine. At 80,000m it's just run in, I think. I took it briefly up the road and it drives OK, apart from a slight wheel hub-type noise, unrelated to engine speed. -
The Speed Camera Thread - Volume 42 26 Apr 2006 (Forum)
She is getting a bit shirty with me because I don't believe the email, and says that she has looked up her own vehicle on the website. I refuse to do this because I suspect that this is some scam intended to get vehicle details off the unwary or to allow a virus to infect the computer. Any comments? -

Servicing skinflintery allowed? 1 Dec 2004 (Forum)
What do BR's think the garage would say if I supplied my own parts? Do any of you do this, given that most garages operate the same scam on engine oil? What has the response been? Just like to check before I try this dodge next time... -
Ken's great idea for public transport 20 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Anyway, I would have thought if you want people to take public transport then increasing fares at 10 times the rate of inflation is not the way to do it. I suppose that this is tied in with his tax scam (Congestion Charge, which I forgot to pay yet again so more fines!!!) not making as much money as he thought and also the fact that the company that runs it takes most of the money raised for themselves.
