  • Oil changes 8 Dec 2007 (Forum)
If you do your own, is it cheaper than £18??? Related subject, their website gives me the options Oil & Filter change - 10w-40 QXR (up to 2300cc) £20.00 Oil & Filter change - Hypergrade 15w-40 (up to 2300cc) £15.00 Oil & Filter change - Visco 7000 0w-40 (up to 2300cc) £25.00 I normally use Magnatec 15W-40 in my 99T Saxo 1.1i (70k miles and normally does 10k a year ish) Should I stick with the 15W-40 option for £15 (not sure why it previously said "from £20" if its actually £15..) or should I upgrade to one of the more expensive options?!?!
  • Renault Scenic 1.9 dCi Oil Change 16 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Grateful for some advice. I'm going to do an oil change on our rencently purchased 02 Scenic 1.9 dCi and the Haynes manual instructs that after filling with new oil and replacing the filter that the stop solenoid plug is removed and the engine is then cranked to bring up oil pressure without firing up.
  • Oil changes 23 May 2002 (Forum)
Just gone for a 6 monthly oil 'n filter change on a 1.0l Polo, mainly because of past posts and at £15 (National Tyres) it was too cheap not to. This car does around only 6K a year, mainly as a home to station car. I'm a bit confused however as to whether it's worth it.
  • Any - Oil Filter change, how often? 31 Dec 2024 (Forum)
I recently read some ostensibly authoritative advice that oil filters only need changing at every second oil change.  I don't think this has been debated on here and like most people I have thoughtlessly changed the filter every time I changed the oil.  But I now wonder - was it really necessary?
  • BMW X3 30d - Intermediate oil changes 17 Jul 2019 (Forum)
I will be collecting an 18 month old X3 at the weekend with 7000 miles on the clock. With my previous 330d I changed the oil every 7500 miles and I was planning on continuing this with the new car. Is there any reason not to? I didn't know if it was better to let things bed in.

  • Golf Pd TDi Oil Change 15 Feb 2006 (Forum)
My 54 plate TDi had just come up to a year old. It is set to flexible servicing and was wondering if there is any benefit in changing the oil after a year or 10000 miles old. The book says it's good for 30000 miles or 24 months. Can anyone recommend otherwise
  • Pre-oil change treatment - paraffin 8 Mar 2004 (Forum)
It has been strongly recommended by somebody who knows that prior to an oil change you should put a litre of paraffin in the engine and run it a bit (20 miles, say). Just as effective as those more expensive treatments, and far cheaper. Any views? Urban myth or top tip?
  • Oil Change 3 Mar 2003 (Forum)
The Clio could do with an oil change, but it's not yet due a full service... I'm mechanically inept so don't want to try it myself. Looked in the list of Good Garages, but nothing in Halifax / Bradford - is it worth taking it along to a fast-fit outfit for this (I'm assuming) simple task?
  • Audi A3 + S3 (1996 - 2001) - 2000 1.8t - Oil/Filter Change - Auto. Transmission 18 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Thanks I am aware the Audi mutli and s-tronic transmissions need to have their oil changed every 40k but not the older version transmission, but why, given the evidence that Oil is a major reason behind transmission failure.. (am I missing something)
  • Any - The importance of correct oil changes 26 Aug 2011 (Forum)
Been reading a discussion on the chevrolet captiva forum (where the diesel has  the same engine as in my epica), and a bit surprised to see how many people did not know for sure what the correct grade of oil is for their car/engine combination. I know it sounds daft, but I specifically request 0w40 or 5w40 for my own oil changes as that is what is required, and i notice in the press that a certain french manufacturer refused a warranty claim as the dealer incorrectly filled with the wrong grade of oil, and the elderly couple "did not check", result engine failure and a big bill.
  • Corporate oil change intervals.......... 14 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Do manufacturers choose a oil change interval based on corporate standardization or max engine life? For example, consider this engine jointly developed by GM and Fiat. two very different service intervals AND viscosity. 1.3 chain cam diesel fitted to Vauxhall range = 20,000 mile interval, 5w30 synthetic longlife oil same engine fitted to Fiat range ( multijet) = 12,000 mile interval, 5w40 synthetic.
  • Honda Accord i-CDTI Oil & Filter Change 9 Sep 2006 (Forum)
Or perhaps it will indeed be blindingly obvious when I unscrew that oil filter cap... Anyone changed the oil on their i-CDTI diesel before and thus able to offer some guidance? Many thanks, Toby
  • Hyundai i40 1.7 CRDI - poor MPG after oil change 23 Jul 2015 (Forum)
2 weeks ago I done a service on my i40 and after the oil change my average mpg has dropped from 55mpg to as little as 38mpg and on the motorway when I was regularly getting as much as 70mpg the car is bairly hitting 60. I have used the correct oil for my i40 (shell helix c3 5w-30 fully synthetic) After a week of poor MPG I thought perhaps the oil might have been faulty.
  • BMW 5-Series E60 (2003 - 2009) - 05 3.0 530d sport oil change 26 Feb 2009 (Forum)
would somebody plse confirm the following: 1 Where is the battery! (I feel a right twit for not being able to find it!!) 2. Have bought a new oil filter element and the correct oil - anything unusual to look out for when changing the oil and where is the oil filter?? Many thanks
  • Diesel Engine Oil for my pug 306 HDi 15 Feb 2006 (Forum)
I change the oil in my HDi every 6k - with such a frequent change, do you think it is safe to use normal petrol 5w/40 oil? The Total Quartz stuff is £29.99 for 5 litres! Even Halfords stuff is the same price..
  • Ford 1.3 pushrod engine 28 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Couple of questions. Firstly why does the air filter have a hose connecting it to the oil filler cap ? Secondly as these engines are notorious for turning the oil into mayonaise how often should I change the oil ? Is it worth using cheap oil and changing it more often to keep flushing it out ?
  • Ford Mondeo - Ford Mondeo 4 2008 model 1.8 litre diesel engine - 21 Feb 2011 (Forum)
I just had my car serviced oil /oilfilter/ fuelfilter/air filter and cabin filter changed .. • Oil Changes 20 Apr 2004 (Forum)
Honest John advocates regular oil/filter changes at 5000 mile intervals on VW TDI diesels. My Passat has now dropped out of its 3 year warrenty, hence I can play now. But the Passat has a under engine bay cover which is extremly fiddly to remove without a pit/ramp hence access to the drain plug is unobtainable, any comments on removing the oil via the dipstick entry (Common on marine engines) with a pump?
  • Vauxhall Corsa B (1993 - 2000) - Cost of Oil and filter change. 11 Apr 2002 (Forum)
I am sending my old style 2000X Corsa 1.2 16v SXi in for a 6 month oil and filter change (it does a low mileage) and I am wondering how much should I expect to be charged at local Vauxhall dealer (3 yr warranty not yet expired). Also what oil should go in this engine?
