  • Nearly empty petrol tanks 13 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Can anyone settle an arguement my wife and I were having yesterday. Is it true that repeatedly driving the car when the fuel light is on and there is not much petrol in the tank is bad for the car. She has heard that all sorts of sludge gathers in the bottom of the tank and can damage the engine if it gets in. I think this is a myth for many reasons: surely any sludge will be mixed with the fuel in the tank as a result of the car's motion; there should not be much sludge in the fuel anyway and there is a fuel filter somewhere in the fuel line to stop any muck getting in.
  • Fuel Guage, Mk3 VW Golf 26 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Wiring from fuel sender to guage seems OK (reads 400 ohms). Fuel sender seems to be open circuit... Do people reckon the sensor just died at a very coincident time, or am I missing something here? Jason

  • Fuel cells and tax 17 Oct 2002 (Forum)
If news from the USA is true, within a deacde many of us will be driving fuel cell cars. Currently performance and range is similar to petrol / diesel engines. As the hydrogen needed is prodcued from water, the exhaust emisions also being water, how will fuel cell cars be taxed?

i would really appreciate if anyone can help me, my partners 2002 mondeo tdci 130bhp suddenly stopped just after christmas while we were out in it, big black cloud of smoke and then it died, since then its had a new engine, 4 new injectors, fuel filter, cam sensor, fuel filter, fuel pipe, fuel rail, nothing has worked and it is saying there is low fuel pressure on the diagnostic computer. we tried a new crank sensor in it and the fuel pressure was ok but it still wouldnt start. but now the pressure has gone down again.we are slowly loosing the will over this car and really need help to get it started. any help would be much appreciated

  • Coasting 10 Dec 2009 (Forum)
Does this work with modern cars? With the clutch pressed in there will be enough fuel supplied to keep the engine idling. Someone told me that if you simply take the foot of the accelerator the fuel supply will be cut-off/reduced to save fuel. This makes sense?
  • Accurate Fuel Gauges 22 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Who would like an accurate fuel gauge? In these computer controlled days with engine management systems that can update the fuelling 16 times a second and Sat-Nav systems etc, etc, why do we have fuel guess gauges? My wife has a Yaris with its hi-tech instrument panel, but the fuel gauge is a column of lights, the last one of which 'blinks' when the fuel is low; but how low is low?
  • Fuel quality - I still don't get it......... 16 Nov 2007 (Forum)
I often read in threads on here, from HJ himself (I think) and on French car websites this business about making sure you use 'quality fuel' ( latest one was a French car website blaming TDCi failures on poor-quality supermarket fuel ). Yet people ' in the know' seem to say the fuel all comes from the same refineries and all meets the 'required standards' (I mean, this isn't Cambodia is it ??)
  • problems with fuel sender - Fiat Ducato 24 May 2006 (Forum)
Hi, Recently had problems with my clutch which thanks to the help of the people on this site was sorted out. Thank you. The vehicle running well but having problems with accurate fuel readings. The engine was originally a 2.0 liter petrol engine. Now has a Fiat Ducato 2.5 Diesel. I do not know much about the history of this vehicle. When the fuel reaches a quarter tank the orange light flickers and on occasions the fuel meter reads empty, which courses all sorts of problems resolved by stopping and turning off the engine.
  • peugeot 406 hdi 90bhp 2000 fuel problem 8 Sep 2003 (Forum)
There is a little like black pump below the first injector which seems to pump fuel into the fuel filter, its made by elth, can anyone tell me what this does, and if it is supposed to make quite a loud sound sometimes when running, this maybe a suspect in my fuel problem, the car is cutting out and displaying the engine management light which will start again immediatly but i have to turn the car over for a long time and it will eventually start, at this stage i have had a diagnostic of low fuel pressure so i was told to replace the lift pump in the tank which has not cured the problem has anyone got any ideas what the problem is.
