  • Hyundai i30 Tourer - Driving in Sardinia 31 May 2015 (Forum)
The varied Sardinian roads offer great opportunities to set free the boyracer, in many ways it reminded me of Scotland, varied roads with little traffic. Diesel was about €1.50 a litre with petrol slightly higher. Lots of fuel stations are unmanned so you feed cash into what looks like a cash machine, select which pump you are parked at, select the fuel you want, then go and fill up.
  • Hyundai i40 tourer 1.7 active 115ps - Reliability/Economy/Maintenance 3 Jan 2018 (Forum)
I never let the tank drop below half full, and almost exclusively use premium diesel, either Shell V power, or equivalent. I am not ''dissing'' other fuels, but I want as little downtime/workshop time as possible during the car's lifecycle, and want to keep the injectors/fuel pump/dpf/fuel tank as clean as possible, and in the case of the tank, free from condensation/moisture/bacteria.
  • Citroen ZX 1.9D power problem? 26 May 2006 (Forum)
Hi, My Girlfriends ZX 1.9D has got a problem that no one yet has been able to answer, I've writen to Diesel Car Magazine, and asked on ZX-Yahoo group, and still no luck. It's quite a long drawn out problem, so here goes. Car details:- Citroen ZX 1.9D Elation, 1996N, 60k miles, Lucus type Fuel pump. Checked/Diagnostics:- New Air filter, new fuel filter inc water drained, new cam belt inc. timing checked, Always starts first time after glow light has gone out. doesn't smoke any more than my Leon TDi.
  • Going electric? 29 Mar 2022 (Forum)
On PCP it’s around £400 a month which is unrealistic but on lease over 4yrs at 12.5k p/a it’s around £315 a month which factoring in the fuel saving of around £130 a month via a nearby free (for now) charger is quite reasonable. Me personally, I’d buy a used pre 2017 diesel Civic and enjoy reliable, cheap motoring that I own outright but the boss wants something fancier.
  • Vauxhall Meriva - 2011 meriva crank no start 21 Mar 2019 (Forum)
The in-tank pump makes an 'groaning noise and primes for like a minute, which seems like a long time and an unusual noise - I've had the tank of and put 12v direct to the pump which makes it throw fuel out at a decent rate - also changed the fuel filter - so presume this side of the system is ok and maybe normal for this car? When cranking live data shows the rail pressure at around 200 bar initially and then can spike up to around 500 bar - is this why it tries to start initially and then doesnt because the pressure is too high....is that a thing?
  • Ford Focus / Other - Help choosing a car 23 Nov 2015 (Forum)
I would also look at getting something a little different from the current Focus, with perhaps, - A larger engine to get more fuel economy during motorway driving - Perhaps an estate (for the odd occasion, when we want to pick up a large furniture item or flatpack from ikea). The main characteristics I will be looking for are;  Modern Safety Features (curtain air bags, etc.), Reliability,  Fuel Economy.
  • Not yet sure - New Purchase 10 Mar 2021 (Forum)
I want to have something that is shifty, but also reliable and relatively decent on fuel as my Nismo RS does about 33MPG on a good day! I have three options currently with I'd say up to £18,000 to play around with.  Option one is a 2014 onwards Audi Q5, 2 litre diesel S-Line plus.
  • Peugeot 306 - small list of problems..... 7 Sep 2010 (Forum)
After a little while or a quick blip of the throttle it will clear its self and return to the normal loud diesel crack.  when i turn off the engine i can turn off the ignition remove the key and the engine will continue to run for a few seconds. On a short trip the car wont be affected as much. i am thinking prehaps fuel pump not shutting off fuel or something to do with the idle?
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 97 1.9D Hard to start, then almost total fail to s 5 Aug 2008 (Forum)
To get him going I told him to turn on the key (which opens the stop solenoid) and hand prime the engine with the squeeze bowl. This worked and it started. He did say he had wet hands from fuel leaking from somewhere so I told him he needs to check that he does not have a leaking fuel line which would bleed air into the system. He said that the car puffed black smoke during cranking and when it finally started it gave out some more black smoke.
  • Looking for SUV suggestions 4 Sep 2024 (Forum)
Weather wise, in the far south of Sweden it doesn't get too cold even in the depths of winter, Jan / Feb seems to hover around the freezing mark with some colder and some warmer days. Maybe a bit of snow but nothing compared to further north.  Not sure on petrol vs diesel vs hybrid? I think my driving habits probably rule out a diesel. I had assumed a petrol ICE but here in Sweden a lot of post 2019 SUVs are only available as Hyrbid (2019 is the last year I can get a RAV4 / CR-V non-hyrbid).
  • 1.8 versus 1.6 - car buying advice please 4 Dec 2008 (Forum)
My last car was a 1.6 Fiat Bravo and I really do not wish to buy a car bigger than a 1.6 engine, mainly for VED and fuel economy issues. Problem is, all the cars I look at in the Bravo class I am unable to get comfortable in the driving seat or, in some case, unable to fit in at all - can't get my legs under the steering wheel.
  • my 'what car'question 7 Oct 2002 (Forum)
Have taken a few online quotes, and at the moment they seem a lot higher than I’ve been paying so far on my Renault. I know that the fact that it’s diesel cuts some costs – at least I think so, am currently conducting a completely non-scientific experiment to see how much the fuel-cost difference is between my 1.1 petrol, and my 1.7 diesel – at the moment they seem to be vying neck-and-neck.
  • Random choice ? - Replacement (proper) 4*4 1 Nov 2017 (Forum)
So, we're thinking it's time for a change. The conundrum is what for ... It only does about 5-6k per annum, so anything diesel and DPF is out. Realistically, even a pre-DPF diesel is out, due to the increased probability of EGR problems with that low mileage, short trips from cold, etc. So, petrol. Obviously, with low annual mileage and a petrol engine we know we aren't going to be getting brilliant fuel economy figures.

  • Toyota Prius - Real MPG 26 Feb 2020 (Forum)
Gen 4 Fuel consumption. I have had four Toyota Hybrids over the past 12 years and this Gen 4 is the best yet. However real MPG depends very much on the tyres (wheel size), climate,  and the type of jouney.
  • Chevrolet Cruze and Fiat 500l - Auto under £6000 with decent boot 22 Jan 2020 (Forum)
I have two toddlers so a boot that can accommodate a double buggy is needed. I currently drive an old diesel Zafira and it's just unnecessary now they're older and I am only doing about 7000 miles a year/short journeys, plus it's a fairly high tax rate. I'd prefer something with under about 80k miles as I have until now driven cheap cars nearing the end of their life until they give up.
  • what would you choose? 18 Nov 2019 (Forum)
i do around 16-20k miles per year. up and down the m6 so mostly moving but some start/stop traffic. im thinking a diesel would give me better mpg than the petrol ive got so would save on fuel costs. I dont really want to go over £8500 which will be financed through savings/loan.  currently i have a st-line 1ltr ecoboost 2018 focus which is leased and goes back in april 2020. im getting 43.1mpg over 28k miles so far.
  • Ford Focus Saloon - Limp Mode at 3k Revs - Focus 1.6 TDCI 21 May 2019 (Forum)
This is the only code it's showing but I've read it could be fuel filter (not likely as replaced last year), injectors, wastegates, hoses etc? Not really sure it there's any stop gap fixes for DPF as new one seems to be near £1k   Cheers
  • Which is better Yaris, or Panda? 28 Aug 2018 (Forum)
I could not make up my mind which one to buy after sold my old Peugeot 306 for a Yaris 1.4D 73bhp 2004 or Panda 1.3 Multijet 70bhp 2004, I have been on both out for a test drive, both are very space for a small car, Panda is cost £29 cheaper to insure than Yaris, both have same road tax but the engine I am more focus is mpg because I am driving nearly 30,000 miles per year between 60-70mph on dual carriage, the Panda’s engine is rev to 2,900rpm at 70mph but the Yaris is rev low at 2,500rpm do you think 2,900 rpm is far too much for a diesel engine. I am wonder why Panda can do 67 mpg better than the Yaris at 64mpg because the Panda got massive a turbo lag till 2,400rpm then it start to deliver power this would lose fuel consumption because of turbo lag but the Yaris is smooth torque it start from 1,500rpm it pull strong all way to 3,000rpm, if the Panda’s top gear is rev too much on 70mph I was expect the Panda to be more thirsty than the Yaris?
  • Ford Mondeo Mk4 - 2010 1.8 TDCI (125) hesitation 30 Jan 2016 (Forum)
The problem does feel like it is fuel related in some way, but as to what exactly I don't know, it would be easier if it happened everytime I drove it, but it doesn't. Has anyone got a clue as to what could be causing these symptoms? Any advice appreciated.
