  • Nissan Micra (1983 - 1992) - 88 1.0 Lubricating front brake sliders with rubber 3 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Then again they probably haven't been lubricated for last 20 years since car was made. I don't particularly want to redo this, cleaning out old grease, oilling/greasing with rubber grease. .
  • Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - 06 1.6(115) Cold start rattle - no aircon 23 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Hi there! when I start my car from cold there is a rattle from the engine bay, sounds like the tappets are really messed up, only for a second or 2, then it returns to normal , which seems to be quite loud too! Its an ex-moability car and has done 35k and I`m guessing its still under warranty.
  • Vauxhall Vectra C (2002 - 2008) - Major Flatspot - 2.2 Direct SRi (petrol) 27 Dec 2007 (Forum)
(this indicates an emission problem that could detroy the cat - according to the manual) Car has covered 47K miles.Runs fine apart from this flatspot issue and also when approaching a junction and depressing the clutch, the revs drop really low then recover to 900(ish) rpm.Flat spot is noticeable in 3rd but much worse in 2nd.Fuel is from Tesco and is around 1/4 tank left.
  • Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - 2001 1.6 Petrol Hot Start Problem - Help!!! 10 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Hi, hope someone out there can help me. I bought a 2001 VW Golf, 1.6 petrol about 1 month ago from a dealer. From cold, car starts fine, runs fine, but if I stop at a garage, say after 30 mins driving (temp guage is in normal range) then the car wont start again. I can get it to start by putting throttle down full and craking until it does start, but it takes a while!
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - What common-rail diesel can you rely on? 4 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Previous car was a 2003 Picasso Hdi - loads of problems, including pump failure at 10K. (warranty covered this) Presently driving 2005 Mondeo TDCI (130bhp, Euro IV). No major problems (apart from gearbox out to lubricate splines on input shaft - as clutch not always disengaging) I usually buy a 6-9 month old car shortly after my existing vehicle gets its first MoT, so I'm looking at changing mid-2008.
  • Passat 99 TDI - flood water damage 28 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Is this reasonable or am I worrying too much. The car's done 160K miles and was basically sound before the incident. Thoughts? Cheers
  • Mondeo uneven tyre wear 18 May 2007 (Forum)
The tyres had worn unevenly- both the front tyres had worn on the inner edges far more than the outer and so I asked the garage to check the tracking. They came back and said the tracking seemed fine. When driving the car seems quite 'jittery' when going over bumps, manhole covers etc, and I am sure there is a problem somewhere. It doesn't drive like other Mondeos I have driven before, and I find myself trying to avoid bumps etc that I can't feel in our other car.
  • Premature tyre wear on VW Passat TDI 130 19 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Hi, I would be greatful if one of you good people could answer my query. I have had a VW Passat for nearly 12 months covered just over 10,000 miles and on getting the car serviced at VW independent garriage, was told inside tyre badly worn down to the metal almost on the driver side. Sure enough, when I checked the tyre the metal was beginning to show through from the rim.
  • Overheating Punto 24 Sep 2006 (Forum)
The only thing I can imagine is the thermostat stuck shut. The engine got so hot that the plastic lugs holding the cambelt cover to the engine have melted. Car was running fine beforehand and starts and runs OK now, although the radiator header bubbles like a boiling kettle. Head gasket failure me thinks. Water level was OK a couple of weeks back when I checked and there have been no leaks onto the garage floor.
  • Brake discs worn at 10k?! 24 Sep 2006 (Forum)
However an advisory notice was issued, because the front discs were pitted and worn (the garage also did a service, so they had the front wheels off for a better look). The car's covered 34k, and the discs and pads were fitted at 24k, about 10 months ago, for which we have the receipt (even though she didn't own the car then). Anyway - the supplying dealer, who fitted the discs and pads, says the parts are only warranteed for 10,000 miles, and the discs have been on for 300 miles longer than that(!!)
  • Audi 80 1995 2.0E, Which CV joint? 21 Oct 2005 (Forum)
I am sure a CV joint (perhaps joints) needs replacing as I am getting a distinct knocking noise on full lock whilst manoevering in the car park. Also a clattering/knocking noise on taking up drive and on the over run. I have looked under the car and the cv joint covers are all intact and everything else - suspension, tie rods and ball joints look fine.

  • Engine revolutions 4 Aug 2003 (Forum)
In one of those moments on the A1 where there was some spare processing power available due to fairly low traffic levels I did a few calculations. Based on an average of 3500 revs to cover 70 miles (about the equivalent of running in 5th in the Yaris), the engine would perform 3000 revolutions of the engine per mile. Taking in to account things like idling, use of lower gears around town etc, you could easily expect an engine to perform 500 MILLION revolutions in it's lifetime and as many as 1000 million (or a foreign billion) if the car lasts much >100k miles or does a lot of around town work.
  • Rainwater leaks - 205 12 Jul 2003 (Forum)
However that was not the problem with the new car, which collected water only on the nearside. I removed the boot-floor coverings and started experimenting with the garden hose. Finally I found a tiny hole in the rubber sealant on a body seam at the lower corner of the boot opening - water was getting in from the space containing the tail-lamp cluster, and that looks the likely entry point.
  • Exchange of fluids! 18 Apr 2003 (Forum)
We have a 2 year old Skoda Fabia 1.9 tdi, with the PD engine. It has covered just under 45,000 km and we hope, as pensioners, to keep the car in good running order until WE are not! I asked my Skoda dealers to carry out the 45,000 service last Monday and in addition requested they change the engine coolant, brake fluid and gearbox oil, plus the air and pollen filters.
  • 306 XU7 1.8i 8v oil weep 22 Mar 2003 (Forum)
SWMBO's 306 SR Sedan with XU7 1.8i 8 valve engine has started to drop oil on the garage floor each night. Having lifted the car on to axle stands today, and looked up from underneath the car, I can see that the oil dribbles down the back of the engine block, about half an inch in from, and parallel with, the cam belt cover.
  • Omega - oil leaking onto manifold 19 Feb 2003 (Forum)
My neighbour's Omega ('94, 3.0 elite) has just had a coolant leak sorted out by replacing a leaking 3-way heater valve. It was also serviced at the same time. The mechanic (a Vx specialist) noted that the car had more than it's fair share of oil leaks (none of which were serious - rocker cover gaskets?) and that oil leaks were quite common on the 2.5/3.0 V6's and his advise was just to keep an eye on the oil level as fixing them would be fairly expensive.
  • Seat Ibiza problems 27 Nov 2002 (Forum)
After much to-ing and fro-ing getting it booked in to be looked at, them loosing the booking and the courtesy car availability, them ordering parts and not getting back to us, usual stuff. Eventually get it booked in to be done, but declined their courtesy car as they don't insure them, and her insurance wanted money to cover it etc, so borrowed her mums car. After first day they admit they didn't start on it till 3.00pm then following day they said they couldn't code the dash in and someone was coming from Seat to help.
