  • BMW 2 Series Active Tourer - A weekend test drive in a BMW 225xe plug-in hybrid 22 Jan 2017 (Forum)
I wanted to evaluate one because the contract hire on my current company Volvo V60 D4 is up in July, and plug-in-hybrids currently offer a big saving in BIK tax compared with diesel or petrol equivalents.  The interior is airy and roomy, and the seats felt initially over-firm but proved comfortable (my wife also appreciated the seat-heaters).
  • Peace of change 24 May 2023 (Forum)
Well after a long battle against swmbo’s demands for an electric car she has finally got one. I threw a Volvo XC60 (turned out to be a bad one) and a Honda HRV at the problem, but to no avail. She has gone and bought a used Nissan Leaf on her own. On the upside I no longer have to pay half the cost of her car, this is her flying solo by electricity.
  • Buying a car seems to be difficult 4 Jul 2020 (Forum)
Salesman said that it would be a factory order but unfortunately VW were no longer doing the 2.0 TSi or the 4 x 4 290 PS versions for 2021 model year and form their current info the hybrid had been dropped as well. So much for that idea. So rang another Volvo dealer about the XC40. Again few cars to look at and they were not expecting any stock cars or demonstrators until September at the earliest. All deliveries up till then would be existing customer orders.
  • Trying the Jaguar E-Pace 17 Mar 2018 (Forum)
     - After two years of suffering the V60's parking brake, which some tortured Swedish genius elected to place by the driver's right knee, there it is again in the same benighted place in the E-Pace, and as with the Volvo, counter-intuitive in that you push for on, pull for off.   It's on the centre console in other Jaguars, so I've no idea why they've done it. So if you fancy an E-Pace, vital to get a long test drive and make sure you like it.
  • Mazda 3 - The perfect 10k used family car 11 Jan 2018 (Forum)
Have had a look through this forum, I’ve managed to narrow the list down to these: Mazda 3 SEAT Leon Skoda Octavia Volvo V60   We’re planning to head out to showrooms over the next few weekends to have a look at examples but wanted to know if any one had any thoughts on this list ot an obvious choice that I was missing (I thought about the Honda Civic but doesn’t interior seems a little dated when looking at the budget).
  • Help needed with prospective used car purchase 17 Oct 2016 (Forum)
My wife is now getting upset as I started looking again this morning at other makes of car, such as Volvo, and the ultimate sin of looking at Renaults and Citroens (we've had major problems with both in the past). I think what made me start looking elsewhere was I read yesterday that DPFs need to be changed (£3000+) or cleaned (£300+) at around the 80k mark.

I'll also tag another question about VED on here if i may, one of the companies selling ex police cars makes claims that as a police car the what would otherwise be full house VED @ £500 for a T5 Volvo does not apply to a plod car...for life...is this so? because it seems too good to be true, and i suspect our tax gatherers, who need to keep the country solvent'ish for as long as possible..:-) well at least until all the referendum(s) are over, would soon be on this.
  • Peugeot 207 (2006 - ) - 07 1.6 Leaky Eolys bag 11 Nov 2009 (Forum)
Recently I noted that there were what looked like oil stains on our driveway, I thought they came from the old Volvos of my brother and father in law... This weekend I noticed that there was a fresh 10 cm puddle under the righthand side rear wheel of my wife's 207 Hdi. Peering under the car I noticed that the fluid came from the plastic casing of the Eolys container.
  • The British car industry's finest hour? 17 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Rover P6 - Light-years ahead of the competition and anything Rover built before it. Brought the executive car into the modern age and trounced Volvo for safety. 2. Rover 200 series (89-) - The best Honda collaboration, brought together the strenghths of both companies and showed the opposition where to go.... 1. BMC 1800/2200 - Nicknamed the 'landcrab', this was a truly under-rated piece of engineering excellence from a time before marketing men designed cars.
  • A new car for my Mother 13 Mar 2009 (Forum)
m tending to advise against diesels. I?ve suggested a C-Max or a Golf Plus. She said she really fancied that Volvo from the new adverts which I think she means is the XC60 which is too expensive as is the Kuga and probably not what she wants when she sees or drives one in the flesh. I?ve printed CbyC and Road tests from here for her for the C-Max and Golf+.
  • How dopey...? 28 Sep 2008 (Forum)
If challenged, I'm sure she'd have insisted that her hands-free device made this safe. I would disagree. 2. The other car was a Volvo S60, and this one was showing some lights - just not enough; the offside tail light wasn't working. Unremarkable, except that I know a bit about the S60 and not only does it have two bulbs for each tail light, but the computer (even the bare-bones one in my S model) gives you an unmissable and specific warning when one of them fails.
  • Vauxhall Vectra C (2002 - 2008) - 3.2 V6 estate - a daft choice? 24 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Does that tally with anyone's experience? I have to say the Mondeo has been excellent on that score, and having had old Volvo and Merc estates before I'm never going back to "premium marque" service/repair costs again (hence why I'm not quite so keen on the X-Type). Insurance would be up two or three groups from the Mondeo, and the tax would be more.
  • Mondeo vs Avensis vs. Maxda 6 vs. ? 8 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Marques available are: - Chevrolet (right!) - Ford - Jaguar - Land Rover - Lexus - Mazda - Saab - Vauxhall - Volvo Obviously a limit on what I can get as max, e.g. the only Lexus I could get is an IS220d at an additional cost compared to now of £104pm. Cheers Rob
  • the battery that came in out of the cold 25 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Returning home after three weeks away I was disappointed, but not surprised, to find the battery (the one I have previously spoken of in the Back room, 10 plus? years old) on my Volvo apparently flat, the starter would barely turn over, certainly not fast enough to start the engine, lights dimming in sympathy as expected. No problem, I used my portable starter, which has been on permanent stand-by in the rear for a couple of years, to get going; however I was surprised that a seven mile run did not seem to charge the battery up at all, so I decided it was time to accept the inevitable and applied the starter again and headed for Halfords (Sat pm, so the local factors was closed) As usual they were ridiculously expensive so I walked across the road and bought one from the supermarket; this meant of course I had to fit it myself and take my old one home.
  • Jaguar car co for sale? 4 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Jaguar is among the poorest- performing parts of Ford and responsible for much of the $162 million (£86 million) loss made in the second quarter at its Premier Automotive Group (PAG), a division that includes marques such as Volvo, Aston Martin and Land Rover alongside Jaguar. It is understood that Mr Leet has told Mr Ford that a sale of Jaguar would stem losses at PAG. A senior Ford insider said that Jaguar had been making progress of late, with the consolidation of its manufacturing facilities in Coventry, a repositioning of its brand and the launch of the new XK model.
  • Suggested maintenance 6 Jul 2003 (Forum)
A week ago i bought a 1993 Vauxhall Carlton CDX 2 Litre injection with manual transmission. I love the car and it drives beautifully (compared to the Volvo 460si it replaced) but i'm afraid it has been neglected. The paintwork laquer has lifted in a few places (entirely across the top of the boot lid) and has a couple of deep, but small, dings that are probably going to necessitate a complete respray at some point.
  • S60 2.4T v V70 2.4T legroom and boot 3 Mar 2003 (Forum)
I have hankered after a Volvo S60 2.4T ever since they were first released, and am right on the point of ordering one: We have even just returned from the continental garage where we have obtained a tremendous deal, and will order today or tomorrow.
  • Battery draining itself Tommy Cooper stylee 29 Jan 2002 (Forum)
On opening car door later l noticed the brake lights had come on, and then went out of their open accord about 15 seconds after l locked it. Ambiguous Volvo saftey feature thought l. Came back to car 2 hours later, brake lights were on again and the battery was knackered. Jump start - quick drive, got out, brake lights on, keys not even in ignition. Brake pedal appears to be bordering on triggering the brakelight even at rest, this would explain battery drain.
  • Reborn classics - your choices? 5 Aug 2009 (Forum)
This time, sort out the six-pot, maybe even RWD?! Flame war steps up again! Safari version would be, as the original is, fantastic. Volvo Amazon - solid, respectable, notably pretty, good to drive, reliable as Toyota's CEO's Swiss watch. Still the best small Volvo ever. Lancia Delta Integrale - if that fails to succeed in reviving Lancia, then nothing will ever do it.

Seat Tarraco (really not sure about the look of this one, bit dull, cant bring myself to consider it) Skoda Kodiaq (similar to the Tarraco and is it too big?) Volvo XC60 (too dear). Sorrento or Santa Fe ? Any help narrowing this down would be great.  Anything I am missing?
