  • Chrysler Voyager (1997 - 2001) - 97 3.3 cooling fans won't come on????? 20 Jul 2010 (Forum)
The following day, driving through the same area, same thing happened, though this time when the ignition was turned back on, NO fans, so let the engine cool a bit and found a nice bit of 40mph road to cool the beast down. Coolant levels OK! Pump working OK! (as was replaced before buying it), checked ALL fuses and relay's, OK! so got underneath, looking for the cooling fan switch and can't find it. So at the moment, courtesy of maplins and plenty of burns, cuts and swearing, jimmy rigged a fused switch to the battery, and the fan's work fine!!!!???
  • Honda Civic UK (2001 - 2005) - 02 1.6 Engine Temperature problem? 22 Jan 2010 (Forum)
After a long motorway run followed by some city driving I noticed white smoke from the exhaust. I checked the oil which looked clean and the coolant is unclouded. I noticed that the engine and radiator were warm but not hot. I think that the thermostat has stuck. The car has done 40k and the engine is a vtec which performs very well. Admittedly the weather is cold but has anyone got any other ideas as to what could be causing the grey/white steam.
  • Citroen Xantia (1993 - 2000) - 99 1.9TD temp gauge rises when heater is turned up 7 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Hi all this is my first post although I have read many articles on this forum and find it really usefull...ok here goes I have got myself another xantia 1.9td estate..the heater was not blowing hot or even warm air so I looked first at the control panel to check it was alternating from hot 2 cold via the switch..that was ok..next I put in a new thermostat..gave the radiator a flush clean..drained the whole system and flushed until clean...today filled up with fresh coolant using header tank..I now do have heat its not great but will do BUT when heater is turned up the temp gauge goes through the roof when heater is turned down temp gauge goes down immediately...makes me think it could be an electrical fault as how could the engine cool so quick...its annoying as having sorted out the heater problem now cant use it coz temp gauge goes so high..normally it works the reverse doesnt it!!
  • Toyota Camry (2002 - 2006) - 03 .65 A number of questions? 15 Nov 2009 (Forum)
Is there a guide on the internet to allow me to understand wiring diagrams. I have looked but I cannot find a good one. Q5. If my bike has only a coolant temperature gauge that only warns you when the bike is overheating, is it possible to install one with an actual gauge. Where can I get a good outdoor gauge from - I've only seen interior ones for cars online?
  • Volkswagen Golf V (2004 - 2008) - MK5 1.9 TDi electric heater 22 May 2009 (Forum)
I'm not sure if this is public knowledge but i found out today that the above car has got an electric heater aswell as coolant heater. From 'research' on the net today there is a 1kw ceramic heater moulded into the dash. For those of you who are thinking wow how do you get that to work then this is for 'S' spec car with climatic control set the heat range to 26 degrees (some say 90% of range others 50%) press the econ button so that the led is OFF Turn the fan to whatever speed you want, maybe be better off with 1 first off to see that it is working and off you go.
  • Clio 1.6 K7M Oil Leak ? 16 Apr 2007 (Forum)
I have taken the manifold heat shield off and the only place I believe the oil can be coming from is the head gasket (though I have not ruled out the cam cover) I changed the coolant about three months ago, the old was spotlessly clean despite its eight years and the new still is perfectly clean, the level is fine and the temp gauge rock steady. I have heard of HGF on this engine, IF it is the head gasket seeping oil then any views as to whether this inevitably leads to HGF ?
  • A4 1.9TDI Issues 27 Apr 2006 (Forum)
Hi a couple of annoying problems with my '98 a4 1.9tdi(ahu engine), a couple of weeks ago the car developed a water leak which i traced to the plastic t pipe that houses the coolant temperature sensor(think thats the one, 4 wire job blue plug) there was a crack in it which i have now sealed up and the leak has gone. since then there have been a few noticeable issues, firstly the glow plug light on the dash now stays on for anywhere up to a minute before going out although the car will start as soon the fuel guage shows the level, also intermittently but twice in the last two days it has failed to start, it just turns over without firing, i suspect the glowplugs have failed but haven't had chance to check but i did check they are getting voltage.
  • 1998 Polo 1.0 stalling when cold 5 Mar 2006 (Forum)
It won't restart straight away (just turns over nice and fast but never bursts into life), I have to leave it a couple of minutes before trying. After that, it's 100% fine for the rest of the day. I was adviced to change the coolant temp sensor, which I did (genuine VW part of course, with blue ring) but that made no difference :-( I also cleaned the distibutor cap contacts and rotor arm as they were filthy and pitted, but although the engine now ticks over more "evenly", it hasn't solved the stalling problem at all.
  • Breakdown: 95(N) Rover 416i, 82k 27 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Bad news indeed thinks I, engine cuts out at top of slip road. Highways Agency towed us into service area. No coolant in system, radiator appears to have spontaneously disintegrated. Engine turns over but won't fire. RAC recovered vehicle to home address. I have not had a chance to look at it since, but I suspect the dreaded HGF.
  • Peugeot 406 stalling during warmup 20 Jun 2005 (Forum)
t think any of these are the real cause of the fault. I thought that the ECU is perhaps getting incorrect temperature information from the coolant temperature sensor, but when I trakced it down, there is a nice new shiny sensor already screwed into the housing, so someone has tried to fix this before (yep, we?ve just bought this car?.) I might be in luck ?
  • Ford Ka cooling fan/warning light inop 21 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Have run it since then for a few months long & short trips without any problems but have to have heater blowing hot in traffic to keep it cool and would like to fix fan/light. Coolant level has been rock solid so I reckon head gasket is OK so checked out fan circuit which is driven by engine management. Found thermistor under the manifold and replaced it but seems to be the same.
  • Under-bonnet checks in test - pointless? 19 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Hi What do people think about the "new" rules whereby learners have to learn how to perform oil/brake-fluid/PAS/coolant level checks as part of their test? On paper, I think it's a good idea - people have an idea and an awareness of weekly/daily checks they have to do to make sure their vehicle doesn't brake down.
  • vw polo cutting out 24 Dec 2003 (Forum)
hi all thanks in advance for your help i have a 1993 L reg polo fox coupe 1.05 litre this occasionally dies in mid traffic with no warning (usually lifting the foot off the throttle or going down the gears (4 speed) from 30 to 70mph. more so after a run of 10 miles or more when things are hot, and possibly more on wet days..sometimes it will run for hundreds of miles without a hiccup performance is not special but seems to run smoothly enough when starting and running the hall effect unit on the end of the cam has been replaced complete with rotor cap etc , new plugs fitted coolant and antifreeze all changed in last 20k service and oil change carried out at 95K new air filter etc (2 months ago) new plugs, have checked under the bonnet for loose connections and sprayed cleaned fuse box passenger side. cleaned and sprayed all the plug together connections accesible. it has been suggested to me it might be a fuel filter problem or fuel pump however i dont know where the fuel filter is as i cant see one directly attachted to the single point injection mechanism under the air filter housing. i dont know if the fuel filter has ever been replaced , certainly not by me in 10K miles. can anyone help or throw some ideas?
  • rover 420 GSI (high Emissions) 6 Sep 2003 (Forum)
The has just failed it\'s mot due to emission being well over the top like a base idle CO 2 being 9.9% Now I found a useful site on the web giving sensor values, for this system. Check Coolant Temp sens, OK 2.5K ohms when hot. Lambada senors valur 0.8 v and rising, not the usual up and down between 0.2 & 0.8V. But the odd I found was the throttle postion sensor, supply voltage 5v, at idle it should be 0.5, but it was 4.5v, and at full throttle was only 4.8v.
  • Help, 2l Carlton loss of power 23 Jun 2003 (Forum)
How do you check? There does not appear to be water in the oil or oil in the water although it has lost a little coolant lately. Does all of this stink of head gasket failure !?! any help or suggestions ?
  • VW Polo, no service history, what to do? 2 Aug 2002 (Forum)
Flush radiator and engine block, fill with G11 or G12 (my preference for longer-life) VW-approved coolant 8. Replace brake fluid 9. Check cambelt, replace even if only slightly worn Does this look reasonable? Is there anything else I should get checked and/or replaced? cheers Paul
