  • Bikesafe ramble 17 Sep 2006 (Forum)
I was to ride as I would on my own but to stick to the 30 and 40 speed limits rigidly to spare him the embarrassment of being "pinched" by his own colleagues. If I was leading he would give directions by indicating from behind in plenty of time. He started by leading on his black Yamaha R1 with Police and Bikesafe decals while I followed trying to relate his riding to the course content.
  • Selling via Motorway 19 Apr 2024 (Forum)
Yesterday, I thought I'd give this new-fangled Motorway a go.  It is, frankly, a bit more of a faff than they would lead you to believe.  Once you've entered all the details, you then need to upload photos.  Fair enough, but they can't be any old photos; they have to be taken from the exact angle they require.
  • Ford Fiesta 1.0 ecoboost - Garage didn't change cambelt before sale 26 Jun 2023 (Forum)
They gave us an RAC 82 point checklist which has everything checked off in the 'standard met' box, apart from the 'scheduled maintenance (inc timing belt)' part which has been left blank. This leads me to believe that it has not been done, which is quite alarming as these belts can go at any time causing huge engine damage. It is not a cheap job to do either, around £1000 to replace the belt and thousands more if it fails.
  • BMW X3 - X3 Long Term reliability? 4 Jan 2023 (Forum)
It actually wouldn't cost very much in terms of cost to change but I'd obviously lose some of the size of the X3 which is an occasional benefit. That would be a car I'd keep long term. Why now?  The lead time for a new Civic is anything between 6 to 8 months which takes me to the point in the year where the X3 requires that amount of money spending. So - any thoughts as to the degree of (albeit subjective) risk in keeping the BMW if well maintained vs a new Civic, along with any real world experience of running an X3 long term would be appreciated.
  • Citroen C4 - Citroen C4 - Anti Theft / Engine won't crank 16 Feb 2022 (Forum)
No problems for the first two months, then when my partner was away for the weekend she was under the impression that the battery was flat as it wouldn't start. She tried jump leads, but that didn't work, but a friendly person with some break experience got it started. Checked the battery and alternator and believed they were fine, but didn't mention or spot an issue with the immobiliser.
  • VW Transporter T30 TDI 140 DSG (13 Reg) - Its August - So here is a (real) silly story 15 Aug 2020 (Forum)
You send us all the details of the vehicle, current photos, etc. and we will agree a value.  The fee was a bit steep, but I thought a more realistic valuation might lead to somewhat lower premiums in the future. Thus the car was cleaned, serviced and MOT'd and photographed and then the form was filled in.  One box was labelled 'Current Value'. Given that the whole exercise was to determine this I entered 'Not known'.
  • Peugeot 308 - Peugeot 308 - good buy second hand or a money pit? 24 Feb 2020 (Forum)
The sunday times review states http://www.driving.co.uk/car-reviews/peugeot-308-mk1-review-2007-2013/ The 308 has been recalled 17 times (at last count) since its launch in late 2007, for electrical glitches, numerous brake faults, fuel leaks, a potential loss of power steering and even a collapsing driver’s seat; most recent recalls have been for problems with steering, shock absorbers, faulty rear windscreen seals and fuel leaks which could lead to an engine fire. So where does the truth lie?
  • Peugeot 306 1.9td - Peugeot 306 STOP light and radiator fan problem 20 Sep 2019 (Forum)
If I pull it out when the car is running, the passenger rad fan kicks in after a few seconds. I bridged the terminals on the connectors lead, but it did not change anything. I have cleaned the connector multiplug on the left hand side of the radiator. I have cleaned the earth just below the battery housing. I am now left to think it can either be one of the following: replace the 3 relays behind the grill OR buy a new bitron OR replace the right hand side radiator fan.
  • N/A - Insurance liability and breaking the law 26 May 2019 (Forum)
She'd been "let out" by a car, because there was congestion on that part of the road approaching traffic lights, and a "keep clear" zone was there to facilitate people entering/leaving that side road (which leads to a supermarket car park). However, a van was illegally overtaking the queue of traffic and struck her. I'm told that this could be regarded as her liability, because people coming out of a side road have the onus on them to check that it's safe to do so - regardless of whether the other driver is committing a traffic offence or not.
  • Toyota Landcruiser 120 series - Toyota component dies & charging twin batteries. 29 Apr 2019 (Forum)
Twin batteries on these vehicles, wired in parallel so still 12v starting, and yes i did charge them both fully so they have an equal starting charge...common sense tells me it would not do either battery any good if you only charged one, but if i had only charged one battery would it lead to one or other of the two failing before it's natural time or would they equalise without any issues?
  • Any - What do you carry with you? 13 Sep 2017 (Forum)
A question prompted by the fact that when I changed my car recently, I was amazed at the amount of rubbish I'd been lugging around  in the old one,  much of it only being there because it had been inserted at some point for a specific reason but never taken out again. Jump leads which I don't need because I've been an AA member since 1987, a dry car washing kit someone gave me years ago but which I never used, spare bulbs from previous cars going back about 15 years, any number of concise atlases which had been out of date since the Sopwith Camel lost its appeal as a mode of transport.
  • Hyundai ix35 - Battery problems, 3 years old 30 May 2017 (Forum)
My biggest concern is the battery and why it has suddenly become unreliable, yet tests 'ok' at the dealship. For instance, since it's last service a month ago, I have had to use jump leads 4 times to start the car.   Occasion 1 - sat in a car park for 20 mins having lunch with the radio on. Usually the media unit would sound an audible warning about the battery (and flash a graphic).
  • Mini one D - Alternator problem? Mini one 05 plate. 29 Jul 2015 (Forum)
Beside that a strong smell came from the bonnet and smoke started to come from the alternator. As soon as the technician removed the jump leads the engine cut out. After this the car wouldn't hold more than 5-6 volts and I couldn't drive home. It shocks me how the car was fine until I parked up and tried to restart it, no warning signs no distinctive noises.
  • Fiat Panda 1.2 Active - Lumpy idle & hesitation while driving 25 Dec 2014 (Forum)
The garage has had another look and, i am told, apart from checking what they did previously have now carried out a cylinder leakage test, another test starting with con (can't read the writing) and have also swapped the coils & leads.  They have checked all parameters and all seems to be OK.  They now want at least £300 to check the timing, injectors & wiring.  Therefore, it seems to me that they haven't got a clue what the problem is and will resort to checking various things until they find something that is faulty, which could take days & cost thousands.
  • Volkswagen Polo III (1.4 petrol) - Engine got wet in floods and wont start at all. 8 Jan 2014 (Forum)
There was water around the coil, which I have been drying gently with a hairdryer, and water had been splashed up on the fuel system wiring/loom. I have cleaned and checked the earth leads from coil and fuel injection system. I am thinking one of the sensors might have been affected by the damp, but I am not so keen to go pulling it all apart too much. Is there anyway of checking whether fuel is getting through (I can hear the fuel pump working as normal)  or not, just in case the fuel injection electrics are playing up because of the water??
  • Renault Clio II - Renault Clio misfire and low compression 22 Jul 2013 (Forum)
My brother in law who I got the car from told me he had the coil pack replaced, it's the block coil pack with the leads made into it. I have also noticed the car heats up really quickly and the fan does not seem to switch on no matter how long the car is running, but the temperature gauge only goes to about half way!
  • Ford Focus - Car battery charging 28 Apr 2013 (Forum)
Then it started raining hard, so after only one hour and a half, I had to disconnect everything to prevent my extension leads from swimming down the pavement! The car started perfectly after that, and I gave it a drive to the shops. But, when I plugged the charger in again when I got home, the indicators showed that the battery was fully-charged (permanent green light) and the bulk light was flashing red.
  • Volkswagen Golf GTI - Rough idle 22 Apr 2013 (Forum)
After reading many other Forums and several hundred pounds later, I have so far: replaced the coil, HT leads, spark plugs, distributor unit +cap+ rotor arm, fuel pressure regulator, blue chip sensor, knock sensor, checked all vaccuum pipes for leaks - one was replaced, tried 2 new ISV (made no difference, with the original being better than the new ones), cleaned out and re-set the (original) ISV, cleaned out the throttle body, 'spaceship', rocker cover vent grill, and air flow meter; checked that the micro switches 'click', had a diagnostic timing/mixture/tickover set up, had a compression test and pressure test (the latter found cylinders slightly down on perfect but car is 24yrs old!).
  • Honda Civic - split liability for bump during overtake. 27 Jul 2012 (Forum)
We rounded a bend with a long straight ahead with good visibility and no on comming traffic. I waited to see what the two cars in front of me were going to do. The leading car maintained they're speed of 40ish while the car directly infront of me maintained there road position centrally in their lane. I waited a few seconds before checking my mirrors, indicating my intention to move to the right and finally starting my overtake of both cars.
